Welcome to Key West.

I made a promise when we got Luna that I was going to try to show her everything there was to see. I’m happy to have made good on a little measure more of that promise.

This is one of the coolest spots we’ve been to. We arrived early this morning under the light of a relatively full moon. It was so beautiful driving, even at night.

Today we got into a few things. It was hot and humid, so I struggled a little bit. But the vibes were right and the town is so much cooler than I had imagined.

Luna covered a lot of ground today and is currently napping off excursion number three of the day. I’m hoping she feels like exploring a little more tonight. But if not, we could both definitely use the rest.

Greetings from the place ‘where the sidewalk ends’ as I’ve been calling in homage to Shel Silverstein. I’m telling you, it’s amazing the places that exist in this world. And many of them are well-kept secrets. I hope you make time to get out and explore this world while you can.

On Colette

I just took myself to see Colette in the theatre. It’s a wonderful story about a woman writer in the salons of 19th century Paris, whose works are co-opted by her husband. She eventually leaves him and takes up with a gorgeous trans man and writes for herself.

I found myself screaming at the screen (silently) “Write your body!” a la Helene Cixous. “The Laugh of Medusa” was something I struggled with a lot, but still it resonates on such a deep level. These stories. Someone should be collecting them. I should collect them.

When I watch something like this, where women in particular are struggling with the changing times -- I often wonder: what drives them on? How do they know they’re an active member of changing history? Sometimes they seem to know they’re on the verge of something. (Hamilton’s History Has Its Eyes On You -- truth in the moment or most likely retroactive? Probably true, given people do tend to mark wars in the the history books...) But perhaps sometimes, maybe even more often than not, they are caught in the moment with no sense of the sea change afoot. How then do they hang on? Stubbornness? Hope? Surely it can’t be that flimsy.

Maybe I’m giving hope a bad name. Easily reduced, but impossible to stamp out entirely. Thusly does the Change limp along? But that’s not really what it looks like... a barely moving limping thing.

I think I shall begin a library. A specific and curated one of female triumph. Female and nonbinary. Gay. LGBTQIAANAACPNOW fuck. There ough to be a better word for everything outside the privileged paradigm. Non-dominant. Non-privileged. Yes these suffice. They survive but they don’t thrive and drip with the living nectar that makes some words so fucking sensuously delicious. I need such a word to name my library.

I need back up.

Traipsed around Lauderdale-By-The-Sea today.

I mostly vented to a friend on the phone about throwing a knuckle of cheese at an impatient driver who had passed me illegally while construction crews were halting traffic to allow them to cross the road with their equipment and how Luna had gone from the alert, jovial passenger who had been receiving nibs of the aforementioned cheese knuckles to alert, defecto therapy dog in my lap licking at my face so as to suggest that if Bruce Bana was gonna let The Incredible Hulk drive then maybe we should pull over and regain our perspective.

And so we pulled over, I reminded myself that it wasn’t my job to police the entire world, and we made an afternoon out of exploring this vibrant, charming (do we still say charming?) neighborhood.

I got some of that Scooby-Doo in my system as well as some more elite coffee. The weather, which had been in the 80°s earlier, cooled off. And my friend didn’t even charge me for the therapy session. That’s what I call a win-win-win.

Good morning from what I can only assume is a scene that escaped out of someone’s unclosed dream as they returned to consciousness.

I was remarking on one of my brother’s posts that sunlight refracting through the atmosphere (mist, fog, clouds, etc.) is one of those things that I would definitely want to describe to someone who’s never been to Earth (as it’s one of the things that makes Earth a beautiful place), but that I would have a hard time putting it into words.

The second frame is video. The changes in the scene are barely noticeable unless you really watch. The audio doesn’t necessarily do anything to add to the video but I opted to leave it in in the interest of integrity. Having said that, the road noise does add a bit of context and helps give a sense of time.
