FAIR PARK'S — 1886
Tumblr media
The new fair’s first Exposition Building would be a grand wooden structure with over 140,000 square feet of exhibit space.
When the fair opened on the morning of Tuesday, October 26, 1886 over 4,000 attendees were packed into the building.
The last event that the old wooden building would host was the Old Soldiers Reunion of 1902.
Dallas had previously hosted many of their large reunions but as the years continued to roll on most of the soldiers were advancing in age.
Ted Dealy provides a detailed accounting of the event:
"I can remember when the United Confederate Veterans had their annual convention in April of. l90Z at Dallas. There were not many of them left. The Civil War had ended nearly four decades before and most of the "rebels" were well along in years-some perhaps in their late fifties, but the majority of them were sixty or seventy years of age, some even older.
The city went all out to receive them.
Some three to four thousand old-time soldiers were expected.
Many of them brought their families along which swelled the ranks of the visitors.
Most of the veterans were taken care of by an encampment at Fair Park where the present-day Coliseum now stands.
Tents were furnished by the State Guard by order of the Adjutant General of the State of Texas.
But not all of the horde of incomers could be accommodated at the encampment.
So, the householders of the city pitched in to help out.
Dallas was then a rather small city of some 50,000 or more persons.
Hotel rooms were few in number.
And, on top of that, not many of the old Confederates could afford hotel prices."
Just one month later, in the early morning hours Dallas firefighters were called to attention as the loud fire bell rang out.
It was too late though.
By the time they arrived the old wooden building had almost burned to the ground.
The building continued to smolder.
Then as the sun began to rise above the golden horizon you could see the building's remains had been reduced to a pile of glowing ashes.
DALLAS
Nonprofit’s contract canceled
Tumblr media
Fair Park First may stay, but Oak View Group given 90 days to vacate the premises
Dallas has chosen to overhaul Fair Park’s management and terminate its contract with Fair Park First, the 277-acre park’s nonprofit manager, and its subcontractor Oak View Group, which operates the park.
The move comes after revelations last year that restricted donor funds were misspent on park operations.
“Our city deserves better and this is an effort in that direction,” Park Board President Arun Agarwal told The Dallas Morning News.
The city’s termination notice gives Oak View Group 90 days to vacate the premises, but the city will still be looking for a nonprofit partner to handle the fundraising for the capital projects in the park.
The city will take over operations of the park once again, after first relinquishing the responsibility in 2019.
Park officials will now oversee day-to-day operations, and bring in new vendors for large and small events year-round.
Veletta Forsythe-Lill, Fair Park First’s board chair, told The News that the nonprofit will stay at the park and transition into a conservancy model to continue raising funds for the buildings and long-promised community park.
“We’re doing what we were doing before,” Lill said.
The entities were still in mediation to recover the $5.7 million in misspent donor funds, and she had hoped they would have found a solution to the missing dollars.
But the first step was to correct the contract, which meant ending its relationship with Fair Park First, in order to change its contract with Oak View Group.
The venue management company, which also oversees the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Council member Adam Bazaldua, whose district covers Fair Park, has thrown his support behind Fair Park First, and its continued presence in the park’s future.
“We must track the impact when decisions are made, and when mistakes are made, we must course correct,” Bazaldua said.
The relationship between the city, Oak View Group and Fair Park First has been in flux for nearly a year after the nonprofit said $5.7 million of restricted donor funds were used for day-to-day expenses.
Under the current structure, the city does not have a direct relationship with Oak View Group even as the for-profit organization had the authority to set up bank accounts and control all funds that belong to the park — including money raised for improvements in and around the city’s 277-acre crown jewel.
That came as a surprise to many who had always envisioned the nonprofit manager to be the authoritative figure.
Officials had been going back and forth during months of mediation to recoup the misspent dollars, and find a pathway to pay vendors who had been waiting to be paid for the services they had offered.
However, it was revealed that the park does not have the funds it needs to repair aging buildings.
Fair Park First’s board, which raised more than $60 million, wanted to strengthen its position and change the contract between it, the city and Oak View Group.
The goal was to stabilize a relationship that has put plans at risk to raise $85 million for a community park and historic buildings to reverse decades of underinvestment in Dallas’ Black neighborhoods and mend a torrid history of razing Black residents’ homes to expand
Fair Park’s footprint.
City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert said the decision reflected the city’s commitment to ensuring “sound stewardship and transparent management” of the public asset.
Park officials plan to deploy a transition team to oversee operations. John Jenkins, the park director, has had sharper words for Oak View Group. The city took over grounds maintenance from the company, and Jenkins has said that Oak View Group has struggled to do even the most basic, preventative repairs.
“This step enables us to reset our approach to Fair Park management and is in the best interest of Fair Park, patrons, and the taxpayers of Dallas,” Jenkins said in a news release.
