The Cat o’ Nine Tails is pure Giallo, according to Bill, but still pretty subdued for an Argento film. As a reasonably straightforward detective story, it held his interest and Karl Malden is terrific. Not being a big Giallo fan, Chad enjoyed The Cat o’ Nine Tails more than he thought he would, specifically pointing to a couple of cool murder scenes and Malden’s fantastic performance. Jeff agrees that The Cat o’ Nine Tails is more mystery than horror and, as such, is true to original Giallo themes. He adds his love for Malden’s performance to the chorus and enjoys seeing Argento’s progression from The Bird with the Crystal Plummage (1970) to this film to Deep Red (1975) to Suspiria (1977). The Cat o’ Nine Tails has Doc’s attention with the idea of the two different types of journalists getting together, a couple of fascinating kills, keeping track of the red herrings, and putting a child in harm’s way. And then there’s the strange love scene between Catherine Spaak and James Franciscus. Hmm.

Giallo and Argento fans will want to see this film! As of this writing, The Cat o’ Nine Tails is available to stream from Shudder and The Criterion Channel and on physical media as a brand new 4K restoration on Blu-ray from Arrow Video.

Confini è una rassegna sulla fotografia contemporanea di ricerca. Un network nazionale di associazioni, gallerie e curatori nel settore della fotografia, ogni anno seleziona progetti di fotografia contemporanea attraverso un bando pubblico sul portale photographers. it, prediligendo il lavoro di artisti che utilizzano il linguaggio fotografico per indagare i confini tra la fotografia e le altre forme di espressione artistica.

Gli artisti scelti per questa edizione di Confini14, e che potranno essere ammirati per un periodo di 12 mesi in una delle tante tappe che copriranno per intero l’Italia, sono: Me Nè con “Luoghi mentali”, Franco Monari con “E poi verrà la nebbia”, Carmen Decembrino con “il velo di Maya”, Silvia Zanasi con “Ombre e menzogne” e Studio Pace10 con “album – ricordi in conserva”.

Carmen Decembrino: “il velo di Maya” C’è qualcosa di non visibile agli occhi, che l’errore porta alla luce. Il velo si dissolve grazie al glitch dato da un comportamento anomalo, che permette al fotografo di ottenere dei vantaggi non previsti. Ciò che è celato, ciò che è nascosto torna in superficie, rivelando un mondo sommerso. Lo schermo tra noi e la vera realtà, che ce la fa vedere distorta e non come essa è veramente, si dipana sino a svelarci una nuova

Silvia Zanasi: “Ombre e menzogne” Il progetto si incentra sul tema dell’identità evidenziando il confronto tra tante sagome umane apparentemente diverse tra loro. Il volto e ogni dettaglio scompaiono dietro alla superficie bianca che, come una maschera, annulla la personalità di ogni individuo e ogni possibilità di rivelazione estetica, mostrando così la diversità di ogni profilo. “L’identità costruita svanisce nel momento in cui si osserva dietro le quinte: il ritratto svela ogni genere di dubbio mostrando la costruzione del personaggio e la finzione della mia prima persona.” Ombre e Menzogne è il titolo del progetto, poichè, come nel mito della caverna di Platone l’uomo scambia per realtà quella che ne è soltanto una proiezione, in questo progetto chi apparentemente è diverso, è in realtà uguale.

Me-Nè: “Luoghi mentali” Costrizioni, trasformazioni, equilibrii. Il progetto artistico di Me-nè si sviluppa verso una vera e propria riduzione dell’essere umano a ciò che intimamente è, e si avvicina all’arte antica sarda in una sorta di primitivismo astratto. L’uomo viene raffigurato nella sua semplicità, nella sua sintesi, nella visualizzazione di quei tratti essenziali che lo definiscono. L’autore propone una semplificazione di ogni aspetto dell’essere umano, fino a disegnare e scolpire non più corpi, ma linee che interagiscono con lo spazio quadrato e cubico che le circonda, le contiene, le costringe e le inghiotte.

Studio Pace10: “album – ricordi in conserva” Non si tratta di tradizionali fotografie, ma di conserve di ricordi. Conservare significa mantenere un soggetto nell’essere suo, custodirlo, salvaguardarlo da tutto ciò che potrebbe alterarlo o distruggerlo. E’ possibile “conservare” un ricordo per sempre? Esistono “date di scadenza” anche per i nostri ricordi? Riflettendo sui due ambiti della fotografia e della conservazione alimentare, il progetto interroga l’archetipo che si nasconde dietro il gesto di conservare. Vengono tirate fuori dai cassetti e dagli archivi immagini nascoste, ormai dimenticate, dando loro nuova vita in una sorta di “archivio trasparente”, invitando allo stesso tempo a riflettere sull’importanza del ricordo fotografico nell’era digitale.”

Franco Monari: “e poi verrà la nebbia” “Questa serie di fotografie nasce da una mia esigenza di ritagliarmi dei momenti nei quali uscire ed in solitudine esplorare il paesaggio per qualche ora. Senza un itinerario programmato e neppure una meta precisa, ma con la sola esigenza di isolamento e di fotografare, torno sempre negli stessi luoghi più e più volte instaurando ormai con essi un legame particolare, un microcosmo personale. L’esplorazione ed il rapporto tra luogo e memoria diventano quindi elementi fondamentali nella formazione di un propria identità.”

Planet of the Vampires, directed by Mario Bava, is a creative science fiction/horror movie made on a shoestring budget. Chad chose this one for our viewing pleasure and he is really taken by Bava’s use of color and at how influential Planet of the Vampires is on later films. When the skeletal creatures were found in the crashed ship, Whitney was disappointed she didn’t see more of them later in the film but found Planet of the Vampires to be very beautiful. Daphne loved the suit designs and lush atmosphere, finding it to be a more complicated story than most 1960s science fiction. Bill, whose favorite director is Mario Bava, loved the old-school tricks Bava uses to create an alien world out of smoke, mirrors, colored lights, and forced perspective.

This episode’s Grue-Crew definitely think Grue-Believers should check this one out! At the time of this writing, Planet of the Vampires is available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
