Lecture Notes 25/09/18 - Research unit 1 - Character
This unit
• why characters matter
• Why research matters
• Brief history of character in animation
• Archetype vs stereotype
• Creating and developing own characters
• 1000 word visual analysis of an animated character (making reference to movement)
• Choose the character AND the essay question.
• Contextualise chosen character- context of broader social or cultural issues, time when the character existed.
Research and Essay Writing
• helps engage more deeply with subject
• More credible as practitoner
• Helps you avoid ‘re-inventing the wheel’
• Exposed to a range of influences.
• Teaches transferable skills of analysis, interpretation, and communication (makes us more employable)
No such thing as being original anymore
• be open to outside influences (the imagination is impure)
• Don’t be narrow minded- inspiration can come from unlikely places.
• Assimilate your influences, fully absorb and understand them.
• Let the ideas grow organically , experience and feel rather than think.
• Make your own work, not just imitations of someone else’s.
CHARACTER
What is a character?
• A being represented in film, play, story etc.
• Distinctive qualities?
• ‘Story is character, character is story.....’ -Koch 2003
• Read ‘ the illusion of life’- Disney animation
• In general, audiences ember characters, not plots
• Identifying with characters- a point of entry, identify with the problems they face
• ‘An audience loves characters who intrigue or enchant them.’ -moore and wells 2016
• Anthropomorphism
Is animation the most empathetic art? - we can relate to anyone or anything.

• These cartoons were created for an adult audience.
• Steamboat willie, 1928 - first cartoon with synchronised sound
In the 30s, animated shorts became less popular opposed to freature length pictures
• 1934 pre production started on Snow White
• Before 1935, Disney storymen trained to think in character and exaggeration. Anything real or sincere was seen as automatically dull.
• After 1935, new values of ‘warmth and believability ’ were taught.
• ‘The art challenges the the technology and the technology inspires the art’ - John lassenter (pixar)
• Characters in feature length films had to engage on a new, deeper level- hated and loved (Davis,
   2011)
• in 1937 it was a big risk commercially and artistically.
• The studio was worried about making believable human characters.
• Controversy as it ‘killed animation’
