so sherlock holmes: the awakened is definitely full of some scary things, but i think the thing that fully cemented it for me -- and honestly has stuck with me more than any other part of the game -- wasn't even the climax, or even the actual lovecraftian horrors themselves.
it's fairly early on, after sherlock was in r'lyeh, experienced The Horrors for the first time, and hallucinated the body speaking to him.
it's when john arrives at the room and approaches him, and that terrified, hoarse, please-god-someone-help-me gasp of "watson...?!" sherlock says as he's curling in on himself, rocking back and forth. he honestly sounds like a child who doesn't understand what's going on and is about to start sobbing.
even afterwards, when watson is understandably worried about him, sherlock tries to wave him off, stammering that he's fine and it was a trick, even when he's very obviously shaken.
like. holy shit. alex jordan you NAILED that "someone hold me PLEASE i'm going to fall apart" desperation and fear of someone who just went through hell, but also, it's absolutely gutting for a player to hear a character normally so impersonal so suddenly frightened, because he literally cannot explain why this is happening.
#sherlock holmes the awakened#frogwares holmes#frogwares sherlock#sherlock holmes#this game does eldritch horror really REALLY well actually#it's not 'oooh ugly monster'#it's 'how the hell do i go back to being myself after learning this is a real thing that exists'#the second part that stuck with me is sherlock confronting rochester on top of the lighthouse and admitting that it's true#and his desperation of 'i need to KNOW' when he's standing in the path of the wave#this game puts him through the absolute wringer#not to mention the whole segment of him getting killed in r'lyeh with the axes to progress forward#and one of the things he calls out as he DIES is watson's name#like#this man has MAYBE known watson for one year and is already clinging to him like a lifeline because he has /no one else/#like. geez.#frogwares doesn't pull its punches with their protagonists#then again this is the same company that made the sinking city. so. i'm not surprised
