THERE'S REALLY LITTLE STAKE, other than death, for shepard in the games. gain the syndicate's interest — he'd checked that particular box as early as the qualifiers ... when shepard had smiled up at a smug bastard twice his size before his eyes had crackled blue and the man was sent flying into the side of a crumbling building. the smell of blood thickened the air within moments, the sound of wood splintering indistinguishable from bones snapping. the screaming was too distracting for him to really tell, anyway. and shepard had turned and walked away, thoroughly unconcerned, shaking his head to-and-fro as though that could dispel the static in his hair.

he had felt eyes burning into him, even through the drone cameras, the very moment his skin began to glow. there: syndicate interest piqued. and now, to keep it. 

but he's still got to survive long enough to make any use of his new notoriety. revenant's a wild card — shepard's known that since the day the simulacrum was introduced to the apex games, and seasons of observation through a screen has done little for shepard's opinion of revenant's sanity and trustworthiness. regardless, having revenant on his team should help shepard more than hinder him.

something's not right. evidently.

he approaches revenant in the aftermath of the battle, helmet tucked beneath his arm. the smell of burnt metal lingers between them; a gash from an L-STAR seared a gash in the side of his helmet just minutes ago, splitting the N7 insignia in two. sweat trickles in rivulets down shepard's now bare temple, and he wipes at them with his forearm. it doesn't do much — grime rubs from his armour and onto his skin, streaking blood and dirt across his forehead. but shepard doesn't seem to care.

" what the hell's wrong with you? " he meant to snarl the words, to let the rising rage in his chest unfurl. but the question comes out a low hiss, quivering despite his otherwise carefully evened tone. it's harder still to hide the dilated pupils swallowing ordinarily steel-grey eyes in black.

" listen. i don't give a shit what you do when you run off. if you wanna throw the game on your own, that's your prerogative — but this? this was too fucking close. " swarmed beneath two squads that had exchanged glances before turning their guns on shepard, and in the sight lines of who knew how many more teams ... the only reason he'd gone in was because the simulacrum was there. because they had a plan.

" i almost died. why'd you fuck with the totem? "

If there was one thing Janelle Decker could say about her brother's death...It was convenient timing. She was still in Tonopah when Shep was shot, and instead of having to scurry over from California, trying to get flights or gunning it down the 5 in her aging jeep, she sat hand in hand with Sawyer and Jill and tried to keep from yelling at all the doctors to give them some sort of god damn update. But when she got her first look at him in the hospital, hooked up to machines that made him look so unlike himself that it sent a chill up her spine, she had the selfish thought that she wished she had still been back in California. She still would've come, but at least she would've had time to prepare. Although, in reality, she knows nothing can prepare you for the mind bender of seeing a loved one like that.

Despite all her teasing of him being her nephew and how he should respect his elders, because of mere 4 years between them, Shep had never seemed small to her, even when he was born, because she couldn't even fucking remember it, she was so young. But there, in that hospital bed, he had. And even now, as she watched him make his way out of physical therapy towards her and Jill, she had to shake that image away. She had to every time she saw him.

"You're lucky she's such a cool kid," Nellie started, always refusing to let it show how much that image haunted her and shook her up every time she saw her nephew, "Otherwise i'd kill your---" there was only one soul in the world that would keep her from swearing, and she was sitting in her backseat. "booty for making me a grand-aunt at 46, Shep."

Cole had never really put much stock into first impressions– he was who he was, he’d live and die exactly that way. He could handle being liked just as well as he could handle being hated– in fact, he’d gotten quite good at the latter over the years. But as he paused on Shep’s doorstep, knowing that the half-brother he hardly knew and the niece he’d never met waited on the other side of it, Cole couldn’t help the flutter of nerves he felt low in his gut. This first impression mattered. Naturally, he wondered what Shep had told his daughter about him– or more importantly, what he hadn’t told her. Cole wasn’t under any sort of delusions here– he knew he wasn’t a good man, but there was a part of him that hoped Jillian couldn’t see that, or wouldn’t hate him for it if she could.  Pushing the thought aside, he raised a fist and knocked thrice against the door before easing back a step and clearing his throat– almost like he was gearing up for the interaction. When the door opened, he offered up a small smile and a little wave, “Hey, man,” Cole started, lifting up both the six pack of cheap beer he’d bought and the small stuffed lion cub he’d spotted at the store, “I come bearin’ gifts.” He glanced down at the stuffed animal, admittedly a little unsure of himself, “Too much?” Cole wondered aloud, almost as though he was asking his half-brother for some sort of guidance. He had no experience with kids, and his own childhood was far too abnormal for him to use as any sort of reference point. “For the record, the lion ain’t for you.”
