Do you think Viserys was a bad father? Could he have prevented the targaryen civil war?

Viserys has four (five) children. He calls Rhaenyra his ONLY child. If that doesn't screan "Bad parent" I don't know what does. It's not even that he is playing favorites, he's flat out rejecting his three (four) children with Alicent completely.

And even then, he was also not that great of a father for Rhaenyra. On top of basically murdering her mom and making moves on her best friend and then tricking her into giving him "her blessing" to marry whoever he wanted by implying he was talking about marrying Laena, he also didn't teach her anything about how to be a ruler, expected her to be just cup girl to all of his buddies like that wasn't gonna make it impossible for them to ever take her seriously as their queen, kept playing dumb and acting like he wasn't seriously considering making Aegon the heir AND like she didn't have good reason to reject any possible husband out of fear that marriage was going to be her cosolation prise for losing the crown, etc.

So yeah, terrible father - and even worse king because the Dance Of The Dragons is 100% his fault. If he had never had a second child, actually banished/killed Daemon for being The Worst, and taught his daughter how to be queen, there would have been no war to destroy the Targaryens from the inside out.

From the moment he decided to marry again, there was a chance of him having son - which would obviously make people go "Now he's the heir instead of Rhaenyra, right?"

She and Aegon could have been the best of friends who would never dream of hurting each other, and with him never having any interest in the crown - the Hightowers are NOT going to accept Aegon not being king, and the people that are loyal to Rhaenyra/want to respect Viserys's will are NOT going to accept Rhaenyra losing her crown.

Literally the ONLY chance they had to avoid disaster after Aegon's birth was by marrying him to Rhaenyra - and considering their age difference (especially in the show) that still leaves plenty of time for some assassination attemps, backstabing, tension rising between houses, new suitors trying to seduce the future king/queen, etc;

Hell, even if the marriage DID happen and Aegon and Rhaenyra were at least willing to tolerate each other their whole lives, that still doesn't resolve the problem of Daemon being ambitious as hell and ready to start shit. He would probably never win due to lack of enough support, but could still do some damage.

So yeah, fuck Viserys.
