“As you navigate through the rest of your life, be open to collaboration. Other people and other people's ideas are often better than your own. Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life.” - Amy Poehler ... Anyone want to collaborate with me? Not a yoga challenge. Something different. I don’t know what. I just know that I need to be challenged and inspired a little more. ... This post inspired by the amazing @heavymetalhannah13. Fuel Your Force - Kylo Ren
Before I knew about this new endeavor from Disney, a friend from the new gym I've been going to asked me if there was a character in pop culture that I used as inspiration for my shift in lifestyle. I had been going to this place for close to 6 months and sharing didn't seem so bad.
So here’s why Kylo Ren inspires me to fuel my force.
The first reason is that he commits himself fully to whatever course of action he’s chosen. For better or worse, he drives himself to always be stronger, faster and ahead of the game. Besides his rage and emotional turmoil, there is a discipline in this that I greatly admire and hope to see in myself at some point. The other reason is because as someone who was psychologically and physically abused from a young age, I can understand his anger and it can drive a person’s choices.
From what I understand with the storyline, Ren had a trusted figure of authority constantly whispering in his ear from a relatively young age. At first the whispers are positive and meant to build trust between a young Ben Solo and the creature known as Snoke. After a time, that trust is used to convince a boy to commit horrible acts as a means of “freeing” himself before moving on to a new master and a new name. He isolates himself and that is when the positive praise is slowly traded out for constant verbal debasement and physical torment as means of “correction”. My stepfather was very well-versed in these methods. From a young age, I was constantly at odds with myself to earn this man’s approval; if he was happy, he was kind. Every time he felt I had not lived up to his expectation or if I stepped out of line, he was quick to mock, threaten or physically bully to punish me. Each time this happened, I was told that it was for my own good and he was teaching me to be a better person. I was forced to take his last name and was never allowed to speak of my father, or call anyone other than him “dad”. 10 years later, my mom finally left him but even to this day I can sometimes still hear his voice in my ear.
So, yeah…. I get why Kylo makes the choices that he does and I definitely tend to agree with his motto of “Let the past die. Kill it if you have to.” I can’t do anything about my stepdad, but I can make myself stronger and faster so that I’m never at the mercy of someone like that again. While Kylo made poor choices out of fear and anger and hurt so many people who cared for him, I use him as a cautionary tale to not let myself make similar choices as I once did. I don’t hurt others because I can, and while I still have to deal with my anger each day, I don’t feel like it controls me as it used to. Kylo Ren inspires me to push harder and become the stronger, healthier version of myself; it reminds me that my scars and anger do not make me a monster, and that people always have a choice.
