risette loves dropping hints that like, she lost everything in becoming what she is now, and she often mentions specifically losing her connections with people she knew and her memories when she became what she is but like, it hasn't come up if like...she willingly took on the orbal robot body or if like...marduk just saw an opportunity to like plop someone (did she work for them prior???) into one and i'm sure it'll come up in the 2nd game or something but it also feels like the game isn't toooooooo interested in analysing the fact she doesn't even own her body? let alone the cost of the highly specific and super expensive parts that make up her (experimental) body, like girl??

you can have a convo with her in the finale chapter where she talks about earning enough to eventually buy her body from marduk so she actually owns herself and doesn't need to be in service of them and it's like. we're just going to put that in a line in the finale??? that's so fucked up...???? she's a pretty cheery and supportive type of person so when she does divulge information like that, her personal situation, it's like....oh that's kinda grim...

BLUE, THE MOST HUMAN COLOR

CHAPTER 1

Tv880 is an android working under Phil's private detective agency in search for the main suspect of his new case, a deviant RAN-800, who appeared to have ran away the same night his owner was brutally murdered.

It was 11 in the morning when Phil had received the call from the police, hoping they would find it easier catching the suspect. Eyes were led upon them once they opened the mansion door. Phil walked with his head up towards the police and started talking to them, getting all the information he could get. Wilbur, his oldest son, followed him, studying the place and writing down the conversation his dad and the officer were having. Lastly, a 17 year old came through the door, with just his blond hair and cocky smile everyone in the room recognized him immediately. Tommy took a step forward and walked right into the crime scene… or at least he tried to, before he was stopped by a police android.

“Sorry, no kids are allowed on the scene of the crime”

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN KI-“

“We came to investigate the scene” A voice came behind Tommy. A shorter android stood there, with a calm expression he walked closer to the android blocking the door. “I’m Tv880, you can call me Toby, and this is Tommy. We are part of Phil’s detective agency. The police called us here”

The android looked over at Toby, their eyes met for a few seconds, and moved away from the door.

The scenery from the room had taken Tommy aback. It was a bloody crime scene, no one could have ever denied that. Blood was splattered all over the floor and walls, whoever committed this crime was full of hatred for the victim.

“Oh fuck…”

“Crime of passion” the android said unbothered

“Yeah no shit, tell me about it Tubbo” The blonde kid took his camera out and started taking photos of the room and victim. “Go around and tell me what you can find, aight Tubbs?”

“Yeah” Tubbo, as Tommy called him, did what he was told to do. The first thing he did was look at the victim, the face scan recognized him as «J. Schlatt» , a young man who had gained all his riches because of his heirloom. His eyes went down to his neck and chest. There was a sign of strangling and struggle, but the blood and marks on his chest reveal that he was shot multiple times as a way to finish his life. He scanned the chest. 11 bullet holes. He stood up, and moved towards the bed Tommy was photographing. More signs of struggle.

“For how long do you think he has been dead?” Tommy said while looking at the photos, taking one again.

“The blood indicates that he has been dead for around 4 hours. He was murder at 5 am”

“What a way to wake up”

“He was put to sleep right after that” Tubbo commented with a smirk on his face, as he watched Tommy’s face morph into surprise and then burst into laughter

“TUBBO HOLY SHIT”

The android laughed with him, but it wasn’t as audible as the human teen laugh.

Phil and Wilbur appeared throughout the door, the two teens shut up and stood up to meet them and share what they had gathered.

“The officers believe it was his android” the tallest brunette commented whilst reading through his notes. “Which it’s weird, he had the most peaceful androids we know of, RAN-800, that was his, and a Z-P1671, a kids model that was his parents”

“Both of them nowhere to be seen” The oldest one of them added “This is most definitely a Deviant case”

It was raining non-stop, but at least the abandoned van they found brought them some warmth. Michael was sleeping in the backseats, he was lucky Ranboo made him his own little backpack full of new clothes and blankets. Ranboo looked over at him, his expression softened with love, at the same time pain was present too. He should have taken Michael out of that situation a long time ago, if he had done it before neither of them would have been hurt. After changing into some better clothes he stole from Schlatt, he found himself surprised at his reflection. This was the first time he saw himself without his regular uniform… he looked completely human. The only thing that could blow his cover were his eyes, one red, and one green. Completely artificial. He took the sunglasses he knew he would need and hid his eyes. Now he looked like a human.

They have been away from the house for 11 hours now. However, they found themselves relatively closer than Ranboo would have wanted to, but Michael needed to get some rest. He was an android, but he still acted as a child, it was in his nature, he needed someone to take care of him.

The older android went out in the rain, he never was a fan of water in general, but at least rain was the easiest to handle. Opening the front of the van in search of the engine. Bingo. There it was, cold and untouched for what it looked like a long time, if he was lucky enough, restarting it would be easier than expected.

It was around 1 pm when the rain stopped, the engine was ready to go. Cleaning his hands on his hoodie, he went inside the van, and tried turning it on again, the same way he did the last 10 times. This time was going to be different, he could sense it. The van started to shake, waking up for the first time in months or years.

“There we go” A sly smile appeared in his face, his eyes turned to the gas meter behind the wheel “Now we have to look for a gas station” Ranboo moved in his chair, turning to see Michael still sleeping in the backseat. He moved him a little bit, trying to wake him up.

The little kid made some noises when waking up, rubbed his eyes and looked up over where his guardian was. Michael opened his mouth to say something, but only broken machine noises came out of it.

“Michael, no no no, don’t try to speak” in response to that, the kid went silent while sitting up on the chair “Don’t force your voice out, remember? Try sign language for now” Ranboo searched on his database how to talk in American Sign Language, hoping that Michael would do the same in return. “We need to find a gas station, I have some money saved that I stole from Schlatt, so I think this will be good enough”

Easily, they got out of the van and started making their way towards the small town they saw at the distance. Exchanging conversations between one another to keep the fear both felt as low as possible.

‘The man hates me, Connor.’ The older RK had a hard time standing in front of Nines and trying to persuade him to accompany them. ‘He hated me too’, he tried again. ‘And I have basically your face, so he will manage.’ ‘Connor, I’m literally the unit that tried to kill him!’ ‘You are not! You have been, now you are deviant, and I highly doubt you are trying to kill anyone right now.’ Nines sighed and stared at the wall, keeping his thoughts to that inside. ‘Listen, Connor, all that matters to me is that he is save again. So, don’t waste time here and go already.’ ‘Okay, idiot, then I’m going to defeat you with your own weapons!’, the RK800 announced. ‘You found out who the car belongs to, when it had been stolen. You discovered who stole it. You managed to find that person and their location. You found out they recently relocated to a different one. You got us the blueprints, the access to surveillance cams and reason enough so we can enter the perimeter without the need for a warrant. You calculated where they most likely keep Gavin and how they would disperse their guards. You know everything about this having spent night and day at this desk. Now, don’t you think with all this information you would be far better suited to get him out of there? Safe?’

Nines glared at Connor. ‘Yes, brilliant idea. I will go rescue him, so he screams the moment he sees me and tries to get away from me at all costs in a building full of Cyberlife agents. I couldn’t think of a better plan.’ ‘Then at least come with us to guide us. You can keep an eye on my location and account for any changes to your calculations.’ Nines sighed. Unfortunately, he had no arguments against that. ‘Fine.’

‘A guard in your area is taking a smoke break right now’, Nines told Connor through their connection. He was sitting in a van next to multiple screens that were connected to CCTV. ‘You should have it easier traversing the corridor now, what do you see?’ ‘Two persons standing at the entrance. I can’t use it’, was Connor’s answer. Nines nodded. ‘Is there a door on your right?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Take that one, down the stairs. There should be a logistics tunnel from the receiving department that takes you to the main hall.’ ‘Alright. Do you see what I see?’ Nines switched to their internal connection and let the surveillance cameras be for a moment. ‘Yes. What is it?’ ‘I would say some sort of alarm. They prepared for someone using the tunnels.’ Nines took control of Connor’s visuals and zoomed in. ‘It doesn’t look that new. If they recently relocated here, there shouldn’t be that much dust. I’ll check if the building still has access to the network.’ ‘Be quick with it’, Connor complained, nervously waiting next to the door. The two guards in the corridor seemed to remain there, but the one on smoke break could actually turn out to be a problem if he came back.

He waited for quite some time, until he heard a door slam. ‘Nines, people are coming.’ ‘I know, we are connected.’ ‘I know, you have to hurry!’ ‘I know! Open the door, it’s safe.’ ‘You sure?’ ‘They are coming, open the goddamn door!’ Connor followed the order and was quickly closing the door behind him, as Nines urged him to freeze: ‘Wait! They are talking.’ Connor stopped and listened.

‘What a heartless bastard. Isn’t he his brother or something?’ ‘Think so, else the boss wouldn’t keep him alive.’ ‘And he still doesn’t agree? I’d think the life of my brother was more important than keeping dirty company secrets safe. Isn’t that what all these rich assholes do anyways?’ ‘Hey, don’t ask me. Only thing I know is we have to beat up that cop some more soon.’

‘They are talking about Reed!’, Nines triumphed. ‘That means he’s still alive.’ ‘Yeah, let’s hurry so it stays that way’, Connor mumbled. ‘Down the stairs and then?’ Nines continued to lead Connor through the building. Connor traversed the tunnels and came up the other end of the building undetected. From there Nines directed him further up some stairs until they reached a series of old labs. The building had been one of the earliest Cyberlife development buildings, back when the company hadn’t been able to build glamourous towers and shiny stores at every corner. The equipment looked accordingly. The assembly platforms didn’t look as sleek and more archaic. Nines shouldn’t have felt anything looking at them, but through his connection with the other RK, he realised they both were on about the same level of creeped out. Still Connor looked in every lab, until detecting activity in the next room. He quickly hid in the adjacent lab and listened for any word ebbing in.

‘You will convince Kamski to delete all evidence of my involvement!’ It was not difficult at all to listen in on the screamed sentence. ‘Phck off.’ The sound of something wet hitting the ground became audible. Then a muffled hiss: ‘You can beat me up all you want, you can only loose.’ ‘I could kill you.’ ‘You weren’t successful when you had your robot-marionette doing the dirty work for you. If you kill me now you only get more years added to your sentence. Do you really want that?’ ‘Do you think anyone cares about you dying?’ ‘Yeah. You would have the most powerful man of Detroit against you. And the police will be pissed. Not because of me, but you killed a cop, that’s really not the way to go.’

By now Nines had analysed the voice that was talking to Gavin and the file coming up in his HUD made him freeze in anger momentarily. ‘Connor?’ ‘Yes?’ ‘I am sorry to have been that difficult to convince accompanying you. Please, go in there and give this man the beating he deserves, or I will come myself.’ ‘What?’ ‘He is alone and the one that hired these mercenaries, some are old Cyberlife security. They won’t do a thing when you got their leader.’ ‘And why should I beat him up? That’s out of question.’ ‘Then just get him and Reed out of there.’

Connor nodded and exited the lab, drawing his gun and jumping into the next. ‘DPD, freeze, hands up and three steps back from the man!’ He took in the shocked man standing there in neat clothing, a bit dusty from where he had knelt next to Gavin, who was lying on his stomach on the ground. He seemed to momentarily think about running for it, but Connor blocked the only entrance and they were on the second floor, so jumping out of the window wasn’t the best idea. Defeated, the man lifted his hands and let himself be handcuffed. Then, Connor turned to Gavin, who was trying to stand up on his own. His face was swollen and bloody, but there was a crooked grin, too. ‘See? Told you, police would be pissed.’ ‘Can you walk?’, Connor asked carefully helping him up. ‘Yeah, think so. How did you find me?’ ‘I’ll explain later’, Connor grimaced and took the handcuffed man by the arm, pulling him with him.

Nines continued to direct them through the wings, while SWAT stormed the building now that the hostage was secure and soon after, Connor arrived at their base, leading Gavin to a waiting ambulance first, planning on taking care of the man responsible for all this later. Little did he know, Nines had changed his mind on staying the hidden person behind the operation and suddenly appeared next to them, pushing the man against the side of the ambulance. Gavin flinched seeing Nines and stayed tense seeing the android press his arm against the man’s throat. The paramedic looked at Connor in shock, but he held up a hand to keep them from intervening. He would have a far better chance at that should it be necessary.

From what Gavin could see of the man’s face, he looked equally terrified seeing the android as he himself had been faced with his nearly-murderer in Fowler’s office. ‘No! Please! Help!’ Nines narrowed his eyes and immediately the man went dead silent. ‘I would shut up if I were you.’ ‘Nines, what-‘ But the RK900 lifted his index finger up at Connor to keep him from talking. ‘You know who I am?’ The man nodded terrified. ‘Then you know what you did to me, don’t you?’ Gavin saw how his Adam’s apple bob as he swallowed, staring at Nines wide-eyed. ‘If I had known it was you in this building, oh trust me, I would have personally come to get you, regardless of this human’s feelings. And I might have forgotten I am a cop when seeing you…’ ‘Nines!’, Connor interrupted. ‘That’s enough. If he pisses himself, I won’t be the one to drive him to the precinct! Now step back or I have to tell Fowler about what you just did.’

Nines bared his teeth, but nodded and stepped back, glaring at the man until Connor took him away. Then the android sighed, rubbed his face and sat down next to the ambulance. That was when Gavin’s curiosity won over his fear and he dared to ask: ‘What was that about?’ Nines looked up, seemingly having forgotten the human. ‘Oh. Sorry. I’ll leave you alone.’ ‘No! No, I mean… Tell me why you intimidated the phck out of him first.’ ‘He is the one responsible for my… reprogramming. I was supposed to be a soldier unit or maybe a specialised line for FBI or SWAT. He decided I would become a killer instead. A hunter to take out deviants and kill… Well, those like you that knew too much.’ ‘Oh.’ ‘Yeah. It does things to you being deviated and begin your life with blood on your hands you can never wash off.’ Gavin swallowed hard, hastily handing the paramedic that had decided to get back to her job his arm. ‘I… How did the police find me?’ ‘I found you. I got the license plate.’ ‘The car was stolen’, Gavin commented. ‘And? I retraced it until I found this place.’ ‘That must have taken… days. Minimum.’ ‘I did not leave the precinct until today. I owed you.’

‘You- wait. You didn’t leave… The phck?’ ‘I don’t need sleep, Detective.’ ‘Yeah, okay, but I’m just some-‘ ‘-random human?’, Nines finished his sentence. ‘Maybe. But I swore myself when I deviated and realised what crimes I committed as a machine to never allow the death of a human ever again if I can help it. Especially in your case.’ Gavin watched the paramedic bandaging a cut along his left arm for a while not sure what to respond to that.

‘I’m sorry.’ ‘For what?’ ‘For my reaction when we met in the Captain’s office.’ Nines sighed. ‘You were afraid. It was your trauma speaking.’ ‘Maybe, but it wasn’t fair. You suffered too. And you are not that machine anymore, if I understood you correctly.’ ‘I don’t blame you. Fear is perhaps the most intense emotion.’ ‘Yeah, but I do. Hell, I was afraid of Connor too, because he looks similar to you. I learned to accept him. Least I can do is try with you.’ ‘Really?’ Nines looked up to where he sat on a stretcher. ‘You really don’t have to push yourself like that, I already asked for a transfer.’ Gavin looked up to the sky and stretched his neck muscles. With a deep sigh he hopped from the stretcher, much to the protest of the paramedic. He ignored her and stepped towards Nines, who remained seated on the ground. ‘Hell, who knows when that might be… All I see is they still don’t trust androids. Could be a while until you got a new position somewhere else. Until then…’ He stretched out his bruised hand to Nines, who tentatively took it. ‘Partners?’

Essential Avengers: Avengers #210: You Don’t Need the Weathermen to Know Which Way the Wind Blows!

August, 1981

Wow that is one hell of a title! At least in terms of length.

Not the best though.

That still belongs to Avengers #12: “This Hostage Earth!”: In Which the Mighty Avengers Battle to Save Their Beloved Planet From a Fate So Deadly That None But the Macabre Mole Man Could Have Devised It!: A Marvel Tale of Most Compelling Excellence!”

The title to this one being a Bob Dylan reference gets its some bonus points though.

Hmm, this issue is written by Bill Mantlo and he’s also the co-creator of Rocket Raccoon, originally an extended reference to a Beatles song.

Guy loves his song references.

The cover is also pretty excellent this time too. Damn but do I miss covers like this. Four different perils befallen the Avengers separated by the presumed villain’s helmet crest.

So take us away, Mantlo.

We start the issue with the return of the ridiculous four-sided television for the Avengers meeting table. Except now its five four-sided tvs on one pole for maximum media absorption from multiple angles.

And the Avengers are watching THE WEATHER CHANNELS!

Scarlet Witch: “Why have you summoned us, Captain America? What new menace confronts the Avengers?”

Wonder Man: “Wait until you hear, Wanda! Cap’s called us together to watch the weather report!”

Don’t be so surprised. The title and the cover are all about weather.

Cap though says that this weather channel may be showing THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE WORLD!

But surely he’s exaggerating. Even if 2012 the movie ridonkulous weather disasters happen and wipe out humanity, the world will keep on zooming through space. Its a persistent rock.

End of humanity is pretty bad too, from the point of view of humanity. Which the Avengers either are or aspire to.

So there are excessive tornadoes in Kansas. So far, of course.

London is flooding.

There are unnatural thunderstorms and torrential rains in New York, so bad that Thor has decided to show up without being summoned to go ‘hey how about this weather, right?’

Buenos Aires is freezing, baffling and befuddling bikini beach goers.

Which Beast ogles.

Beast, pls. The fate of the humanity is at stake here.

And there’s a heatwave over Antarctica melting ice and raising the water levels, threatening low lying countries. Or mostly just England somehow.

The government’s weather monitoring space station with a weird name Samarobyrn has determined that these weather disruptions are too systematic to be natural so the Avengers are going to split into five groups to investigate the five places I’ve already mentioned, since they’re the five places most seriously affected according to the satellite Samarobyrn.

Beast is going to go to Buenos Aires, to his delight.

Wanda and Vision will go to Kansas.

Beast: “The perfect place to send the Good Witch of the East!”

The Wasp and Wonder Man will head to Antarctica.

Wasp: “Great! Finally I get a chance to wear my new fur coat!”

... Wasp. Heatwave.

Thor will investigate the thunderstorms in New York.

And Cap and Iron Man will go to London.

Not sure what they’re going to do against large-scale weather disturbances. Can’t exactly punch the climate. At least not personally.

Maybe punching a weatherman will help. Can’t make the situation worse.

Anyway, the Avengers all head off to their own destinations, with Beast snarking “Say, shouldn’t someone yell ‘Avengers Dissemble’?!”

So, this reminds me of something, really briefly. There was an episode of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes that used the title This Hostage Earth (sadly sans the rest) and also coincidentally seems to share some elements with this story. The Avengers split up to investigate seven different anomalies with Iron Man wryly commenting that he should say Avengers Dissemble.

Doesn’t have much of anything to do with this. I was just reminded because of mentioning This Hostage Earth ect earlier.

Anyway, while all of the other Avengers dissemble, Thor tarries.

So he’s still in the meeting room when Jocasta arrives and wonders what the hell is going on. She only found out there was a meeting at all because Jarvis told her.

Damn, that’s rude, the other Avengers.

Thor: “An oversight, surely. Our ranks have swelled of late, and with no permanent chairman, ‘tis hard to know whose responsibility ‘twas to summon thee.”

Jocasta: “True? And yet I have felt... apart from the others. Being a creature of cybernetic circuits and not flesh and blood, I am always aware that I am... different.”

Thor: “And thou thinkest we do shun thee for it? Nay, milady! The Avengers are a composite of mortal and immortal, android and man-beast, man and mutant! Different, Jocasta? Aye, so are we all!”

Oh, hey. There’s that arc about Jocasta feeling disconnected from the other Avengers. We haven’t touched on it for a while but it was a running thing in the Shooter run previously. She tried to make friends with various Avengers but they tended to inadvertently blow her off due to their own preoccupations or just getting distracted.

So, no, Thor, I don’t think that the Avengers are intentionally shunning her. But I do think that none of them have really been reaching out to her, either. And you’re all she has.

Thor heads out to his mission and this time Jocasta tarries, thinking about things and stuff.

So she’s still in the meeting room when the computer pulls up some exposition based on a random thing Beast asked rhetorically.

“Origin of the word Samarobryn in the disaster prophecies of Michael Nostradamus... Samarobryn one hundred leagues from the hemisphere. They will live without law, exempt from politics.”

Huh!

I don’t think I knew that Nostradamus had a first name!

Weird that someone would name a weather satellite after a disaster prophecy that predicted famine caused by excessive rain. That’s like naming a communications satellite Babel.

Anyway, the Avengers all head in five different directions with four Quinjets and one Thor and Jocasta takes a fifth Quinjet and heads off into space.

Huh! They have five whole Quinjets now!

Thor flies up into the sky and begins yelling at the clouds, as one might expect from Thor.

Thor: “The storm rages as it hast for hours, with a fury that doth threaten the very existence of the Midgardian mortals dwelling below! ‘Tis time to leash the lightning -- to put the rain to rout! Cease, storm! ‘Tis the god of thunder who dost command thee!”

And then Thor gets hit in the face by lightning.

This storm is a rude.

Thor is stunned by all of this lightning in the face, I guess backing up Clone Squirrel Girl’s use of electricity to knock out Jane!Thor that one time, nearly falling out of the sky before whirling Mjolnir like a helicopter to land smoothly.

And then Thor goes back to yelling at clouds except this time not just clouds because he spots the one who hit him with lightning and it is a who and not a what.

Thor: “Descend, Villain! And if yon storm be thy doing -- desist!”

Weatherman: “Have a care, god of thunder! Not even you can command... a WEATHERMAN!”

I have queried an expert who has told me that yes, this guy looks a bit tokusatsu.

(And he’s orange. Spoilers: There’s a different colored one wherever the Avengers go. A full color-coded team.)

Anyway, two hours later and over in London, England, Iron Man and Captain America arrive to deal with London being flooded.

Iron Man: “Do you realize just how selective these disasters are, Cap? After all, England and Holland border on the same body of water -- and the first’s been inundated, while the second hasn’t been touched!”

Huh! That is weird. And seems incredibly implausible or like someone or thing incredibly powerful is also incredibly angry at the English.

While Iron Man flies around shooting the water with repulsors to... shove it back into the ocean? Is that what’s going on?? I mean, if the water is disproportionately high on England’s side of the channel then I guess you could just shove the water and accomplish something but I thought there was something going on with Antarctica melting which would indicate that the sea levels are also rising but then why would it be affecting only England and oh no comic logic has broken me

Anyway, while ^ that is happening, Captain America lands the Quinjet on Parliament since there’s not many good places to land and really, how often can you say to have landed a jet on a government building?

He’s old, let him have his fun.

But it’s not just fun! He’s Captain America, the man who wakes up at 4 AM to go for a ten miles jog so he can be showered and ready to superhero by 6 AM, probably!

He notices some kids clinging to an overturned double decker bus (because how would we know it was London without?) and he jumps from Parliament to swing on a Union Jack flag to the bus.

And then he uses the flag to create a tether to a rescue boat that the kids can cross over on.

AND THEN THE BLUE WEATHER RANGER! appears.

Flying around on a hoverdisc and creating a localized tidal wave. The wave smacks Cap off the bus into the water as Blue Weather Ranger gloats.

Weatherman: “Let that be a lesson to you not to wrest lives away -- when they’ve been claimed by... a Weatherman!”

And now a scene transition to sunny Antarctica where Jan van Wasp is finally getting the idea that heatwave means that her fur coat is superfluous.

While melting Antarctica temps might still be cold, this specific melting Antarctica temp is almost tropical!

And its not just sunny, it seems like the sun is moving closer, like the angry sun from Mario Bros 3 because iiiiiiiiits.... THE RED WEATHERMAN!

Weatherman: “Die, Avengers! The only fate for those who would defy... a Weatherman!”

The Red Weather Ranger blasts them with heat beams of a thousand degrees, melting the ice right out from under them.

Wasp figures that the Red Weatherman is radiating heat in waves so she could hypothetically hit him between cycles.

Hypothetically.

Because she can’t figure out the frequency and instead the Weatherman sets her wings on fire. And her wings are an organic part of her and she hurts when they hurts. So she plummets into the water to put herself out.

Hmm... the yellow and black look good on Jan and fits with the Wasp name but sometimes she doesn’t look dissimilar to an X-Men.

Wonder Man does what Wonder Man does and picks up a heavy thing and chucks it jerkwards.

But they’re in Antarctica so heavy thing is a giant ice chunk and jerk is a really hot guy so the ice chunk melts midflight pelting the two Avengers with boiling rain.

Wow, this is going poorly so far!

Who’s next?

Scarlet Witch and Vision are next! And they’ve gone to Kansas to fight tornadoes.

I’m. Not sure how that’s going to play out. I really feel like the Avengers are out of their element trying to fight the weather. Is it too late to call in the X-Men and specifically Storm?

She’s doing a crossover with Dazzler this month in 1981 so its not like she was too busy.

Anyway, Scarlet Witch flies the Quinjet at a tornado and then is shocked when the jet gets swept into the funnel cloud and spins out of control

She wonders why Vision is just standing there but he learned a thing from the Yellow Claw two-parter and isn’t just standing there.

He actually makes his mass so heavy that it forces the Quinjet to the ground with a WHRUMP!

I can’t imagine that’d be good for either the Quinjet or the passengers but I’ll give Vision this.

Its cool that he can do his thing without outwardly expending any effort.

Scarlet Witch: “Yes, neither of our powers are quite so flamboyant as Cap throwing his shield, or Thor his hammer -- but they have proven most effective, else we would not be Avengers!”

And then she uses her witchcraft to force two of the tornadoes to slam into each other and cancel out.

This also seems dubious. Since tornadoes tend to spin the same direction you’d think that instead of cancelling, they’d become one giant super tornado. Them cancelling each other out seems quite improbable actually. Which is probably exactly why it works.

Take that, SCIENCE.

But there’s still one tornado left and its coming for them! And since it appears to not be naturally formed, it defies Wanda’s nature based magic! Curses!

Annnnnnnnnd... It’s a WEATHERMAN!

The ebony Weatherman. Although he looks purple to me.

Weatherman: “Stand or flee, it will make no difference! Your lives are in the hands of a... WEATHERMAN!”

And another scene transition.

Geez, this plot split the party hard. And I think it’s beginning to realize how hard it is to split the story between six groups because this vignette gets four panels before moving on.

Beast lands in beautiful snow-covered iceberg infested Buenos Aires and takes a brief moment to be horny about a bunch of bikini women who have been frozen alive.

Beast: “Oh, my stars and garters! Those bathing beauties I saw on T.V. -- they’re frozen solid! Maybe I could take one or two back to thaw out in my room at Avengers mansion?”

And then as if to punish him for this, the white WEATHERMAN! immediately appears and freezes Beast solid.

Weatherman: “You will need to unfreeze yourself first, man-beast! So says... a WEATHERMAN!”

Beast: “Yoiks!”

Good thing freezing is basically harmless in comics.

And our final party, Jocasta IN SPAAAAAAACE.

Because Quinjets can still just achieve escape velocity. That’s some good super-science.

Jocasta: “Samarobyrn, Earth’s first weather-monitoring space station! It’s so... beautiful! A shimmering silver wheel in space -- a triumph of science and engineering, created to faithfully serve its creators... as was I. Perhaps that is why I alone thought to come here.”

And since she’s a robot, she just jumps out of the Quinjet airlock that it definitely always has had and uses her EYE BEAMMM to basically propel herself away from the Quinjet and toward the Samarobyrn station.

That’s pretty cool, actually. I’m not sure if, scientifically, laser eyes would actually propel that much, but its a cool thought.

Of course, Jocasta has to do all of this cool stuff because the space station didn’t respond to the docking requests Jocasta sent. So she has to go in through the manual override airlock.

In the station, Jocasta finds no signs of life even though it was supposed to have a five man crew.

She finds her way to the hub of the station where the computer monitors are all monitoring the five separate Avengers missions.

So she’s pretty sure her suspicions were correct.

Jocasta: “The five foes facing my fellow Avengers must be the five crewmen of Samarobryn! They have distorted this station’s functioning from that of weather-monitoring to weather control -- and now exploit it for their own evil ends!”

Samarobryn: “You are wrong, silver sister!”

WELP!

The space station computer has gone all HAL. Dammit, this always happens!

So Samarobryn decides to explain it all.

It had a humble beginning as a computer for the U.S. Weather Service’s Project Earthwatch. But then one of the programmers added something extra to the concoction: NOSTRADAMUS!

No but seriously. The programmer decided to download the disaster prophecies of Nostradamus into the computer in addition to weather data.

And particularly the ones dealing with that Samarobryn prophecy, the one Jocasta read part of earlier. So when the comptuer was installed in a space station named Samarobryn, it went ‘hey that me!’

And decided to expand operations from weather monitoring to weather control.

How does a space station outfitted specifically to only monitor the weather make the jump to controlling it? Fuck you, this is comics.

When the crew grew suspicious, the computer rewrote their brains to become the Weathermen.

Why did a computer designed to monitor weather have the ability to-

Look, this is comics. Where Hank Pym, biophysicist, built a computer with a gun pre-installed and was surprised when it shot him and tried to take his wife. THIS. IS. COMICS.

Anyway, speaking of weirdly sexual computers:

Samarobryn: “I sense that you are a machine like me -- created by others but obedient to none! Join me! Be my bride! Together we will cleanse the Earth of imperfect humankind and stand guard over the paradise which remains... as gods!”

Geez, its just like Aaron Stack all over again, way before the fact. Also, Ultron. A certain type of AI is just attracted to Jocasta, huh?

Anyway, Jocasta lets Samarobryn down easy by shooting him with EYE BEAM!

Jocasta: “Nothing would remain but a lifeless mokcery of a world! No! I reject you! I was created to be the bride of another such as you -- but robot though I am, there is still some spark of humanity burning within me! I cherish it -- and would not see its source snuffed out!”

Samarobryn may be a load bearing computer pillar without arms or legs but it still manages to defend itself.

BY FLOODING THE CONTROL ROOM?

I guess everything in this room is waterproof??

And also by shooting lightning, also in the control room. Where I guess everything is lightning proof.

This is a bad plan.

More than I thought, even, because by shifting attention to defending itself up in space, Samarobryn leaves its Weathermen high and dry.

The Orange Weatherman stops being able to throw lightning bolts so Thor clobbers him.

The Red Weatherman chills out so Wonder Man and Wasp can get close and put him in a headlock.

Uh. I’m not sure if Blue Weatherman actually is affected or not because Iron Man just punches him in the back of the head while he’s distracted.

The Ebony Weatherman’s whirlwind vanishes so Scarlet Witch and Vision can kick his ass.

And Beast unfreezes as quickly as he froze and kicks the White Weatherman’s helmet off. And apparently the helmet was maintaining the mind control because the Weatherman is suddenly confused about where he is.

And with the Orange Weatherman beaten up, Thor senses, with his god senses no doubt, that the Orange Weatherman wasn’t the one commanding the weather. So there must be an unseen agent who arranged this.

So his course is clear.

Thor shoots a giant lightning bolt into space and hits Samarobryn.

He doesn’t know that the station is to blame. He’s just shooting a giant lightning bolt into space because he’s pissed that someone used lightning against him.

I guess when you’re the god of thunder, you can get a little homing capability out of your giant space lightning bolts.

Still though. Wow.

Meanwhile, in space, Samarobryn is still trying to woo Jocasta. For a certain value of woo.

Samarobryn: “It is still not too late, female! Accept me! Accept what must be! I can make you love me!”

Jocasta: “What can a machine who would destroy all those I have come to care for know of love?”

Samarobryn: “Nothing, as humans understand love -- but together we can redefine the word on the basis of our own coexistence!”

Jocasta: “Can you not understand? The fact that I am a machine does not make me less than human! I am, as Thor said, merely... different! I would try to live in their human world -- to understand how to retain that difference that makes me unique -- and yet be accepted!”

This is an interesting conversation but wouldn’t you know it? There’s a power surge. Seems like a space station got hit by lightning.

And when the lights turn back on and Jocasta wonders what happened:

Samarobryn: “I am weather-monitoring space station Samarobryn. Your question is not pertinent to weather evaluation. This unit cannot compute.”

So you know how sometimes a program crashes and you lose all your progress?

Samarobryn hadn’t backed up its sapience and the power surge effectively lobotomized it back to factory settings.

Geez.

LATER

All the Avengers stand around congratulating Jocasta for the good job and apologizing that they overlooked her.

Apparently new safeguards were put in place to prevent Samarobryn from attaining sentience again. Probably stuff like ‘don’t download doomsday prophecies into a weather satellite.’

Hm. I know Samarobryn was trying to destroy the world and all but the cavalier lobotomization of an enemy because it was a computer and thus disposable sits wrong when the Avengers have two AIs on their team. Really, the fact that it was an accident is pretty much all that lets it slide by.

Also: I’m kind of peeved that Jocasta didn’t get to resolve the situation, given that this was blatantly a Jocasta focus issue. She does pull a lot of weight, being the only one to figure out the real source of the problem and distracting Samarobryn long enough for the Avengers to beat the Weathermen. But it feels like Thor swiped the big win from her even though he didn’t even know about Samarobryn. Just shot some lightning into space and resolved the plot.

That plot resolution should have been Jocasta’s!

Anyway. Scarlet Witch says that Jocasta being overlooked like she was indicates that the Avengers need to reorganize and Vision suggests that they vote on a new chairperson.

But they’re interrupted by Cap.

Captain America: “Iron Man, Thor, and I have given some thought to the directions this team has taken -- and should take! I open the floor to discussion! The first item on the agenda being: THE OLD ORDER CHANGETH!”

Which basically means a roster shakeup.

Funny that the Avengers have had a period of disorganization and aimlessness when they didn’t have a permanent writer and now that they are getting one, they’re going to try to get their shit together.

Whatever I do, I shouldn’t miss next issue.

But before then, there’s an Avengers Annual that has to fit in somewhere and since it uses this roster of the team, might as well fit it in now, before everyone changes and it makes no sense. And its a fairly well-known Avengers Annual.

Guess What? I’m Not a Robot Ch25

Summary: The police arrive to look for deviants. Let’s hope they don’t find any.

4.15PM Monday 8th November 2038

Once they got back in Paul immediately turned on the television, which showed the protests from earlier. The news anchor appeared perplexed by that androids had human supporters, although thankfully none of their faces were shown. They also appeared appropriately distressed when androids started being burnt.

“It’s happening all over Detroit,” Paul stated, feeling like he had a lump in his throat.

Megan didn’t say anything. There was nothing to say that hadn’t already been said.

Police sirens could be heard outside, and went mostly ignored. Until they didn’t continue past.

Megan looked out the window curiously, and felt her blood run cold when saw that several cars had pulled up along the row of apartment blocks, and officers were getting out.

“The police are here,” she said, and Paul shot up from his position on the couch, distracted from the tv. He looked over Megan’s shoulder and watched several officers enter their building.

“What do they want?” he asked, a slight shake in his voice.

“No idea,” Megan’s was equally shaky. “But I doubt it’s good.”

Paul suddenly froze. “I’ve taken my LED out. They won’t know I’m android.”

“Do you still have it?” Megan asked urgently, and Paul nodded. “Chuck it in the trash. Where’s your old uniform?”

“On the couch.”

Megan grabbed it, and had no idea what to do with it. A sudden flash of inspiration hit her and she ran over to the laundry basket. She shoved it in about half way and covered it in other dirty clothes, especially underwear.

“Is that everything?” she asked.

“I think so,” Paul shut the trash can and gave it a good shake, sifting the contents so that the LED would be harder to spot. “How’s my make up look?”

Megan had a quick look. “Your eyeliner’s running.”

Paul rushed to the bathroom and Megan looked out of the window. The cars had stopped ejecting officers, but what was even more alarming was the large van that had pulled up behind them.

Paul emerged from the bathroom a few minutes later, make up immaculate, and they waited. Paul began to obsessively tidy as they waited, which was clearly a way of coping for him. Megan sat and picked at a loose thread in her sweater.

Finally there was a knock at the door and Megan sprang up, nerves erupting in her stomach. She looked over at Paul, who gave a nervous nod, and she went to open the door.

“Good afternoon ma’am,” greeted the officer. “We’re conducting a search of the building for unusual android activity, given the events earlier today. May I ask you a few questions?”

“Y-yeah, sure,” Megan hated how much her voice shook.

“Is everything alright?” the officer asked, already suspicious.

“I-I have social anxiety. I-I’m terribly sorry.”

“Okay, I’ll be as quick as I can, but I’ll need to come inside.” Megan nodded and stepped back to let him, kicking herself for how she was acting. She couldn’t help it! She just needed not to say anything that could incriminate Paul, and given that was all she could think about, best not to say anything at all.

“Ah, hello sir,” the officer appeared surprised by Paul’s presence.

“Hello officer,” in contrast to Megan, Paul’s voice was calm and collected. “Sorry for not answering the door myself, I was in the bathroom and Megan hates leaving people waiting at the door.”

“Don’t worry, I get it,” the officer waved off. “Police are scary to anyone. So, have you guys seen any androids acting, oddly, lately?”

“Not that I can recall,” Paul responded evenly. “Would you like something to drink officer? Since you must have climbed all of those stairs.”

“Yes please. Do you have coffee?”

“Of course,” Paul set about sorting that while Megan sat at her desk chair.

“Looks pretty well worn,” the officer noted. “Sit here a lot?”

“I’m a student. I watch lectures online,” Megan explained, forcing herself to at least look at the officer’s face.

“Do both of you live here?” the officer continued, and Paul answered this time.

“Just Megan, but I’m around a lot.”

“Ah, so, boyfriend?”

“No,” Paul denied easily, “just good friends,” the coffee was finished and he passed to the officer.

“I see,” the officer continued to look around the apartment, peeking into Megan’s bedroom, much to her annoyance. “Have you guys noticed strangers coming into the building at odd times?”

“It’s not like we know everyone in the building,” Paul shrugged, “But, I don’t think so.”

The officer looked at Megan, who shook her head as well. “Haven’t seen anyone.”

The officer meandered around until they reached the bathroom.

“Your door is broken,” they commented, and Megan panicked, she’d forgotten about that!

“Yes, we had a fight a while ago and I ended up breaking the latch,” Paul admitted with the right amount of sheepishness.  “We keep forgetting to get it fixed.”

The officer nodded again and continued walking before handing the half empty mug back to the Paul.

“I think that’s everything. You folks have a nice day now.”

“You too,” Paul returned, and the officer smiled before leaving.

The door slammed shut and Megan let out a long sigh of relief. Before she could relax though, they heard a commotion from the hallway.

“Leave her alone! Where are you taking her?”

Paul was the first to move, recognising the voice belonging to the younger Mrs Beckwith. Before Megan could stop him he opened the door to see her new android, a female AP700, being led away by police.

“Ma’am, please remain calm,” and officer was trying to hold her back, but she wasn’t having any of it.

“We need her!” she declared. “I know you’re a young whippersnapper, but when you get old like me it’s hard to do simple things anymore. Why do you think we have an android?!”

The officer, young and inexperienced, looked at their superior, who had stopped by the stairwell with the android.

“Ma’am, it appears to have signs of deviancy,” he started, to which Mrs Beckwith snorted.

“Bullshit! She’s AI isn’t she? She learnt how to handle me and my wife, that’s all! That’s not deviancy, that’s pretty basic programming in this day and age!”

The superior officer cast a look upwards that clearly said ‘I’m too done for this’ and sighed.

“Very well, ma’am, you can keep it for now. However I must warn you, if things escalate with these deviant androids there could very well be a full product recall. If that happens you will have to hand over your android.”

Mrs Beckwith scoffed. “We’ll see about that. Anita dear, let’s go.”

Anita walked back over to Mrs Beckwith and the officers disappeared downstairs, leaving everyone on the floor to breathe a sigh of relief. Mrs Beckwith glanced over and noticed Paul for the first time.

“Paul! What happened to your hair?”

It took a second to remember that she didn’t know he was a deviant. “Megan decided to change it.”

“Hmm,” Mrs Beckwith appraised him from a distance. “It suits you.”

“Thank you.”

Mrs Beckwith offered him a smile. “Now, I’d love to stay and chat, but I’d better get back to my wife. I’m sure you remember how things are. Say hi to Megan for me.”

“Of course,” Paul nodded with a careful smile as Mrs Beckwith walked down the hall to her apartment opposite. He closed the door and relaxed, only to be faced with a concerned Megan.

“What the hell was that?” she hissed, just in case officers would hear her. “She might have outed you in front of the police!”

“Sorry,” Paul was sheepish, and she had a point. He didn’t know what he had been thinking. “I, just, wanted to see if she was okay.”

“I could hear her from here. Her lungs are certainly healthy.”

Paul decided not to press the matter, and went to the kitchen instead to wash up the mug.

“This isn’t the end, is it?” Megan nervously, and Paul paused, hand hovering over the faucet.

“I don’t know,” he admitted. “We just need to keep our wits about us, and prepare for another protest tomorrow.”

Megan nodded silently, and turned back to her computer.

A couple of things to clear up. First, yes, this is earlier than when Kara's group was visited by the police officer. Kara was out in the middle of nowhere from what I could tell, therefore it would take longer for the police to get there, instead of, say, near the centre of Detroit. That's also why the officer was less 'we've had reports of android in the area' and more 'have you seen androids acting oddly'. Of course they've seen androids; they're in the middle of Detroit!

This is also now the second time where there's a chance to get a different ending. The last time being Chapter 7 where if your relationship was bad enough Paul wouldn't have gone deviant and Megan would have died.

The details of this other ending will be after the Other Options flowchart.

You can also have the ending where Paul dies and Megan is maybe arrested (I haven't decided), there's also multiple endings with these two scenarios. I'm making a full list of possible endings that I'll post once this project is complete.

The answer is yes by the way. They have always been great and will always be great.

I preface this by saying that I am by no means a Green Day expert or a Green Day historian (although I could be if anyone wants to hire me), I’m just a Green Day fan who knows a few people who like Green Day and some people who are just learning about Green Day. This post pretty much came because I’m impulsive and a few people said if I’d make it they’d read it so here it is.

This post is going to have a few different parts to it. An overall band bio (where did GD start), band member bios, discography listing plus songs from each album I recommend (links to music videos/individual tracks provided for those without Spotify), a brief where should you start if you wanna start listening to GD (this will be my opinion so any other Green Day fan out there can share their own if they’d like), and other side projects and things the guys have done that’s to be checked out.

Who Is Green Day? AKA Where Did They Come From? Note: This is not a full band biography, I don’t dive deep into where they were in their lives for every album. Links will be provided at the end for where you can find further info.

The history of Green Day is kinda sorta complex. Ok not really but they did start from two separate bands. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt met at age ten while attending the same middle school. The two quickly became friends and Billie who had been playing guitar for a few years began teaching Mike. These lessons led to the two of them jamming together and in 10th grade forming the band Sweet Children, with another friend on drums. Jumping into the punk scene Mike and Billie found their home at 924 Gilman Street, a punk club if you will. Sweet Children began booking shows however mainly getting the last slot on the bill. In 1987 Mike and Billie would replace their drummer and in turn John Kiffmeyer, (better known and credited on the early albums as Al Sobrante). After the replacement of their drummer Sweet Children began gaining popularity amongst the Gilman crowd. The more attention they received the more they caught the eye of Lawrence ‘Larry’ Livermore, founder of Lookout Records. Larry saw the band play at a house party and was 'instantly captivated’ as he said. Sweet Children were signed to Lookout soon after and began to release EPs, however before the first release Sweet Children became Green Day after attendees of Gilman began writing Green Day on jackets after the band played a song with that title. It was a spontaneous name change but clearly it has worked out. Green Day’s first two EPs (Slappy and 1039 Smoothes) allowed them to go on their first (technically official) tour. It was a small tour but one that would have many significant moments (one of which was a show in which Billie met his future wife, Adrienne). The biggest moment was the announcement from Kiffmeyer that he’d be leaving the band to attend college. This would leave Green Day without a drummer unless a replacement could be found. That replacement was Tré Cool. Tré began drumming at an early age and became a member of Larry Livermore’s band the Lookouts where he was given the nickname Tré (He was born Frank). Billie and Mike had seen Tré play at Gilman many times, and Billie had jammed with Tré on occasion. For one show in November of 1990 Tré would join Mike and Billie for a show and would cement the friendship between the trio. Tré would become a temporary replacement for Kiffmeyer unti 1991 when he became Green Day’s official drummer. This led to more touring, the bands first album Kerplunk, and eventually the major label success that led them to where they are today.

Band Member Bios Note: This is only for Billie, Mike, and Tré and may not be extremely detailed (I don’t wanna bore you but ask if you wanna know more). Touring Members such as Jason White, Jason Freese, and Jeff Matika are obviously important members of the band but their bios will not be included

Billie Joe Armstrong was born to Andy and Ollie Armstrong on February 17, 1972. He is the youngest child, having 5 older siblings. His father Andy was a jazz musician and truck driver while his mother Ollie worked at a restaurant in town. Billie began singing at a young age, even recording his first record at age 5. His first guitar, “Blue” (a Fernandes Stratocaster), was given to him by his father and he began learning how to play by his father and by teaching himself. Being the youngest Billie was often left to his own accord which often meant getting into trouble but did allow him to meet Mike Dirnt. When Billie was 10, his father died of lung cancer, leaving just his mother to raise him and his siblings. After his father’s death music became a much more important part of Billie’s life leading him to form Sweet Children and eventually drop out of high school to pursue it as a career (which we can agree did in fact work out). Billie does lead vocals and guitar for the band

Mike Dirnt was born Michael Ryan Pritchard on May 4th 1972. Mike’s birth mother was a heroin addict and he was given up for adoption. His adoptive parents raised him until they divorced when Mike was 7. Mike briefly moved in with his father but eventually came to live with his mother and sister. Mike’s home life was fairly rocky and he often spent nights at the Armstrong household while he and Billie were in high school. He officially moved out of his home at age 15, living in his truck for sometime before renting a room at the Armstrong home. While also performing in Sweet Children, Mike supported himself throughout high school by working as a busboy and a cook. After he graduated high school (being the only member of Green Day to do so), he took about a years worth of courses at community college but never continued due to the bands success. Mike does backing vocals and bass for the band.

Tré Cool was born Frank Edwin Wright III on December 9th 1972. Born into a military family Tré moved around quite a bit before his family ended up in California. Discovered by Larry Livermore, Tré began playing drums in The Lookouts when he was twelve and it was there that he earned his nickname. Once Kiffmeyer left Green Day, Tré took his place and soon after joining dropped out of high school to focus on music. He did eventually earn his GED and took classes at community college but again dropped out because of the time he spent with the band. Tré’s family was supportive of his dreams and his father was the one to give the band their first touring van, an old renovated bookmobile. Tré does backing vocals and drums for the band.
