In her room, Nathalie can smell the mountains. It’s that feeling in her chest, a rot tangled in her lungs. A memory that flashes too fast to see but too vivid to forget. It’s- Gabriel enters her room without knocking. Nathalie listens to that capricious tone in his mouth; sticky-honey when he calls her name, saltwater when he coaxes her to lift her chin and face him. “An apple,” he says, pointing the fork upward, “half for you and for me.” A moan ruptures from her lips. “Why?” The smile that dances in his eyes tells her nothing at all.
