Don’t mind me, I’m busy thinking about how both Émile and Gabrielle immediately commented on Adrien’s looks upon meeting him for the first time (although in very different tones and with very different intentions, of course). How Émile reinforced that his grandson’s only redeeming quality was that he was “half-decent-looking” (but still not good enough, never good enough). How in Adrien’s mind, Gabrielle’s immediate affection will irrevocably be linked to the fact that she found him pretty. How even Marinette’s grandparents want to meet “the boy who is as handsome as a princess”. Urgh. Urgh…

Reaction to “Werepapas” (S6 E5)

Most episodes from seasons 1 through 4 are named after the Monster of the Week™. The titles of the ones that aren’t (“Felix" and “Gabriel Agreste”) allude to the person genuinely responsible for the episode’s crisis. “Werepapas” follows that pattern: Ringmaster was the villain, but the Werepapas—Emil and Johnny—caused all the trouble.

The opening scene suggests that Emilie’s illness dominated Adrien’s early childhood, setting him up for further trauma after she “disappeared”. Since he knew she was critically ill, maybe he knew she didn’t just vanish but he didn’t dare admit it.

This episode features numerous subtle callbacks to “Representation”, where Marinette (and the audience) learned about the Graham de Vanily sisters’ upbringing. We already knew their parents were cold and disapproving with high expectations, although it’s likely this was primarily Emil’s influence considering he barely allowed Millie to speak.

On that note, it’s well-known that children in abusive families often find themselves mired in abusive dynamics as adults, as either victims or abusers. They subconsciously recreate the situations they experienced in childhood because it’s familiar, even if unwanted. Both sisters ended up married to controlling tyrants, just as their mother did. There’s a slight difference, though: Colt apparently started that way and Amelie married him reluctantly. Emilie defied her family to marry Gabriel, and he was a kind and loving husband once. But over the years he changed, possibly as a reaction to the stress of his wife’s illness and his desperate search for a cure.

There’s been a concerted effort (probably on Nathalie’s part) to warm up Maison Agreste’s sterile ambiance. But festooning the house with greenery can only do so much, and there are still parts of the house—and parts of the family legacy—that remain shuttered and shrouded.

Parents watching this series with their kids may giggle at “Millie (Graham de) Vanily” and the reference to a certain R&B act of yesteryear. But anyone who knows the history of the duo will get the hidden meaning: Milli Vanilli didn’t perform any of the vocals on “their” songs, and Millie doesn’t have a voice of her own either.

Johnny and Gabrielle are huge fans of Jagged Stone… imagine if they found out Adrien is friends with his son… and Adrien is dating his ex-girlfriend!

After several episodes where Marinette’s assorted complexes directly or indirectly caused someone’s akumatization, it’s refreshing to see a storyline where Marinette fixes things instead of messing them up. She even weaponizes her infamous clumsiness with that “accidental” spill on the custody contract. Too bad Emil had a duplicate.

Ever since the show introduced the Graham de Vanily twin rings, it was implied they had some legendary mystical ability aside from serving as Adrien’s amok. It turns out they had power after all: they symbolize the fraught history between the Graham de Vanily and Agreste families. Ladybug breaking the rings to destroy the akuma within them parallels Marinette’s role in liberating Adrien from his parents' and grandparents' control, allowing him to choose his own guardian and his own future.

Why didn't breaking the rings kill Adrien if they contain his amok? Here's a theory: before Gabriel made his wish, he had counterfeits made and gave those to Adrien, hiding the ring containing the amok someplace no one could recover and destroy it. There's precedent for that theory--it's exactly what Felix did after he stole Gabriel's ring, as seen in "Gabriel Agreste".

I find it very funny that Lady Graham de Vanilly has a Vivienne Westwood-inspired necklace, when the brand is famously tied to punk fashion; I had an inkling she was going to snap just from that detail, she's clearly more progressive than she lets on! (and maybe she's a swiftie zfhfkhj)

Also very fond of the Shrek 2 vibes of the Sunday lunch scene, down to the cracking of food bit and Lady GdV's bun which looks a lot like Fiona's mum's hairdo

It's interesting to note that the Graham de Vanilly's all basically have the same names (Emile-Millie-Emilie-Amélie), and kind of same for the Grassettes (Gabriel's/Gabi's mum is called Gabrielle... Which is for the bit, since his dad Johnny is clearly based on French rockstar Johnny Halliday, who wrote a song called Gabrielle)

I do like Gina describing Adrien as "pretty like a princess", it's nice to see the nod to earlier episodes where Marinette depicts herself as a knight rather than the damsel in distress; this episode takes it a step further though, as Adrien quite literally becomes a trophy-child...

I don't think I'm ready to talk about the trauma of Marinette having to break the rings to free her boyfriend WHILE KNOWING that she's probably killing him in the process (I'm still unsure of whether Adrien knows about the fact that he's a Sentibeing, it's kind of killing me)

L'épisode de Werepapas est assez intéressant en lore et on a enfin les flashbacks d'Emilie parlant de ses parents à Adrien. Mais ils ne sont pas avec eux car ils aiment des choses plus qu'elle faisant référence à leur statut. Mais aussi le fait que ces deux là soient ensemble pour créer le plus de souvenirs avec son fils avant de partir. Et le flashback avec Nathalie que le rassure, c'était la confirmation qu'elle attendait. En ce qui concerne Milly, honnêtement vu comment elle se comporte. Je me demande si elle a pas ressenti de l'envie envers sa fille car elle avait la liberté d'épouser celui qu'elle aime alors qu'elle non. Et le fait qu'elle prend à chaque fois ce qu'a préparé les Grassette, possible référence à l'alcool. Le fait qu'il est possible que Milly se soit déjà saoulé et qu'Emil perd patience petit à petit. Même les tremblements quand Chrysalis lui parle et ça s'arrête quand elle la convaincs. Et vu comment Milly semble être habituée, je me dis qu'Emilie a dû aussi subir cet abus et c'est aussi pour ça qu'elle a décidé de partir. Mais d'une certaine ironie, Gabriel est devenu celui qui a abusé son fils au final.

Chose à noter est que pendant le dîner, le portrait de la famille d'Adrien à côté des grands parents de Graham de Vanily. Montrant au premier abord, qu'ils sont "proches" des parents d'Adrien mais aussi la distance car ils sont venu voir leur petit fils maintenant. Les Grassette qui sont plus libre et détendu mais Emil qui était plus carré et strict ne peut pas les comprendre eux. Et il perd patience ainsi que Johnny. Même Adrien qui essaie de parler, personne ne semble l'écouter à part Marinette. Et tout le dîner est un joli contraste avec celui du dîner des Dupain Cheng ! Mais aussi faisant un rappel avec Chère Famille et Loup papa. Dans chère famille, chacun ont une opinion différente pour Marinette et Sabine puis Milly veulent que leurs enfants choisissent pour eux. Tandis Loup papa faisant référence aux grands père qui se battent bien qu'au début, je pensais à du catch en les voyant, j'avais pas vu les gants !

Et en soit c'est logique que Chat Noir ou Adrien ne soit pas intervenu dans le combat car Milly dit que tout ce qu'intéressent les deux grands pères c'est de se battre pour dire qui est le plus fort. Ou bien quand Emil veut les anneaux jumelles, en revanche Adrien est plus fort avec les mots et donne la résolution. Au final, c'est lui qui a eu le dernier mot sur sa vie et ça c'est bien. J'apprécie le développement d'Adrien et curieuse de voir où ça mène. Même le flashback avec Adrien plus jeune, il a justement ses baskets blanches comme aujourd'hui, il ne sait pas encore ce qu'il veut mais il le trouvera ou aura au moins un indice sur ce qu'il veut faire plus tard.

Pour Nathalie, je vais être honnête, je l'aimais pas, que ce soit en tant que Mayura, sa romance avec Gabriel ou bien qu'elle le trahit. Ça m'a jamais parlé, quand elle n'était plus avec lui. J'avais toujours cette impression qu'elle faisait que le strict minimum et du coup ça m'agaçait. Mais cet épisode, j'ai apprécié ses moments, le fait qu'elle n'ose pas rendre le câlin, qu'elle dit qu'elle est pas la mère d'Adrien alors qu'elle est attachée à lui et le fait qu'elle arrive à le lui rendre quand il a sa résolution. Ouais j'ai appréciée donc pour moi elle est neutre pour l'instant. Quand aux deux anneaux, je vais pas théoriser pour l'instant, je préfère attendre d'avoir plus d'infos.

The Werepapas episode is quite interesting in lore and we finally get the flashbacks of Emilie talking to Adrien about her parents. But they're not with them because they like things more than her referring to their status. But also the fact that these two are together to create the most memories with her son before leaving. And the flashback with Nathalie that reassures him was the confirmation she'd been waiting for. As for Milly, honestly, the way she's been acting. I wonder if she didn't feel envy towards her daughter because she had the freedom to marry the one she loved while she didn't. And the fact that she always takes what the Grassettes have prepared, a possible reference to alcohol. The fact that it's possible Milly has already gotten drunk, and that Emil is gradually losing his patience. Even the trembling when Chrysalis talks to him and it stops when she convinces him. And seeing how Milly seems to be used to it, I'm thinking that Emilie must also have suffered this abuse and that's why she decided to leave. But ironically, Gabriel became the one who abused his son in the end.

One thing to note is that during dinner, the portrait of Adrien's family next to Graham de Vanily's grandparents. Showing at first glance that they are “close” to Adrien's parents, but also the distance as they have come to see their grandson now. The Grassettes are more free and relaxed, but Emil, who was more strict and rigid, can't understand them. He's losing patience, and so is Johnny. Even when Adrien tries to talk, no one seems to listen except Marinette. And the whole dinner is a nice contrast to the Dupain Cheng dinner! But also reminiscent of Chère Famille and Loup papa. In Chère Famille, everyone has a different opinion about Marinette and Sabine, then Milly wants their children to choose for them. Whereas Loup papa refers to the grandfathers fighting with Tom fighting Chat Noir, although at first I thought it was wrestling when I saw them. I hadn't seen the gloves!

And it makes sense that Chat Noir or Adrien didn't get involved in the fight, since Milly says that all the two grandfathers care about is fighting to see who's the strongest. Or when Emil wants the twin rings, Adrien is stronger with words and gives the resolution. In the end, he had the last word on his life, and that's good. I'm enjoying Adrien's development and curious to see where it leads. Even the flashback with Adrien when he was younger, he's got his white sneakers just like today, he doesn't know what he wants yet but he'll find it or at least get a clue as to what he wants to do later.

As for Nathalie, I'll be honest, I didn't like her, either as Mayura, her romance with Gabriel or her betrayal of him. It never spoke to me when she was no longer with him. I always had the impression that she was doing the bare minimum, and that annoyed me. But this episode, I appreciated her moments, the fact that she doesn't dare give him back the hug, that she says she's not Adrien's mother even though she's attached to him, and the fact that she manages to give it back to him when he has his resolution. Yeah, I liked it, so for me she's neutral for now. As for the two rings, I'm not going to theorize right now, I'd rather wait until I have more info.
