Robert Rauschenberg was an American painter and graphic artist born in 1925 in a small town called Port Arthur in Texas, United States and died May 2008 Captiva Island, Florida at the age of 83. He was a painter and a sculpture but he also worked in areas such as photography, printmaking, papermaking and performance however Rauschenberg is well known for his combines 1954-1964 in which a number of artworks which included everyday object around the house were used as art materials questioning the distinction between painting and sculpture. The Black Mountain College was an experimental school for art music and poetry. The school had no grades or tests and the students even designed their own course schedules. The schools mission was to create complete people however from the lack of money and students the school closed but its legacy still grows to this day.

Robert Rauschenberg's first paintings in 1950 was a series of all white and all black surfaces underlaid with wrinkled newspaper. He began to explore the possibilities of making art out of objects such as coca cola bottles, traffic barricades and stuffed birds calling them combine paintings. In 1955 he became associated with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company starting out as a designer for the costumes an set and then later became a technical director. He also produced theatrical pieces in collaboration with composer John Cage. His piece Minutiae is one of his first and lergest free standing combines that he created. It was constructed for dancer Merce Cunningham's who which he followed to the Black Mountain College.

Another combine he created named Odalisk combines oil paint, watercolour, crayon, pastel, paper, fabric, photographs, printed reproductions, miniature blueprint, newspaper, metal, galss, dried grass, steel wool, a pillow, wooden postand lamps on a wooden structure on top of four casters and a stuffed rooster mounted on top. The cuboid shape between the wooden post and the rooster has four sides containing mostly mgaes of women including photographs of his mother and sisiter. The title 'Odalisk' meaning female slave with images of women and a male chicken on top suggests a massage about gender roles in inequalitity.

From then on Rauschenberg focussed on experimenting with newspaper and magazine photographs in his paintings and in 1962 he used the silk-screen stencil technique from Andy Warhol for applying photographic images to large scaled canvases to strengthing the images with wide strokes of paint of abstract expressionist brushwork. His work pieces connotate modern American history and are well known for their sophisticated compositions and the relations to the objects shown. In 1998 he receved the Japan Art Association's Premium Imperiale prize for painting.

Robert Rauschenberg never had a say when he was a child but his creativity blossomed after being influenced by an art gallary. It is clear his experience at Black Mountain College has had an effect on his work as he created his own unique combines and was a hard working indiviadual.

It’s been a bit since I’ve actually posted on here. I’ve not been reading much due to work and personal issues, but I finally pushed through and began reading again. I had finished my reread of The Library at Mount Char and that had solidified it as my favorite book. I’ve been debating if I want to talk more on it; I have a lot of things to say but I don’t know.

Anyways, what I do want to talk about is Red Sister by Mark Lawrence. I finally reached the second part of the book (I’ve actually read into the second part as well now oops). Overall I have been very pleased with the book, but I have been skeptical on the journey up to this point. How Lawrence writes this book, the reader is always kept with a lack of information. We are seeing everything from Nona’s perspective, yet we know only a little more about her than the other characters in the story. We get to sort of learn about Nona both as the other characters do and as she does herself. I felt as I was reading so far that I just didn’t know anything. Anything about Nona more than the lies she tells her friends and also about the convent since Nona doesn’t know anything about that either. I do think it is well written to where we get to feel the same as Nona being thrown into this environment and having to adjust, but it is also a little off putting at times. One of the other issues, that may purely be a personal one, but I had (and still have) a lot of trouble keeping up with all the names. You are thrown all of these names at once and don’t really get to know them all super well for a while and have to sort of connect each sister to their name and what they do. I honestly didn’t know Sister Kettle was a grey sister until the second part. Though there is a bit of a character guide at the beginning of the book that helps. Also as I’m reading, I’m having trouble separating all of Nona’s friends that don’t get much development so far. Ara, Hessa, and Clera are quite easy, but I tend to mix up Ketti, Ruli, and Jula too much. I have been getting better at it as the book continues, but this issue here probably warrants a reread to make sure I’m getting everything correctly. ~~and for one more issue I need to briefly speak of, having red and grey class and red and grey sisters mean *completely* different things can be confusing and frustrating occasionally~~

Enough of the semantics though, the content so far has been very interesting and where I think this book shines. There is something inherently (I don’t want to use this word again but) interesting about a world slowly being encased in ice and having all of life contained to a sliver of land at the equator. The mystery of what is happening as well as the history of the world is always riding in the back of your mind as you’re reading. And while I did criticize Lawrence earlier for the lack of information available at different points, I think he has done a good job feeding the information to the reader. Like Nona and her knife fingers(?); she doesn’t understand them herself and I think it would be silly for us to just know she has weird phantom knife fingers. The question of what can she actually do and what happened in times with Lano Tacsis is well done and I really like that there is still a mystery to Nona, both to her and to us. (I would also like to mention Nona and Hessa’s thread bond as a good example of this, but that doesn’t come into play until the second part of the book)

I did feel odd that not a lot happened in the first part of the book. It was almost entirely exposition and I’m still not even sure of where the plot is going, but I think that’s okay. It is a bit weird to get used to that there isn’t some big goal. There are just a lot of unknowns and mysteries and that are slowly starting to unfold. And in the first part, we did get the visit of the High Priest. I have to say, that is one of my favorite scene I have ever read. Abbess Galss really stands out as such a good character. This scene as well as her religious argument with Nona in class really made me enjoy her character. She has a lot to her that we don’t get to see and is like Nona in a lot of ways but more mature. Her tenacity, sacrifice, and strong will were amazing to watch unfold. It really hurt seeing what she had to do for Nona and it was great to see her bully the High Priest. And then Nona’s ordeal was truly well done and choreographed. What I haven’t talked about is how Lawrence writes the combat. Nona is small and swift and can’t just go and hit people or deflect an arrow flying at someone. Lawrence really writes it in a way that keeps that in mind and feels like this 10 year old girl is fighting and moving and doesn’t just grab an arrow out of the air because that would be idiotic. Nona’s movements and actions are really well thought out and add to the fantasy he is trying to show and it makes me really excited to see more combat in action.

What I would like last to mention in my thoughts about the first part is the prologue. I was very confused by the prologue on the initial read of it. For good reason, I didn’t know anything going except well what was happening at base level (girl is getting attacked by a bunch of assassins or fighters). And you are well lead to believe that Sister Thorn is to be Nona. It makes a lot of sense and the name seems fitting due to her sort of being a tool to fight. She was bought to be a fighter in the Caltess fight ring as well as that being her only real skill through the first part. But that all changes when she is revealed to be the shield. And I absolutely love that. She is destined not to be the thorn or the sword killing and fighting, but instead the shield protecting the chosen on with her skills and speed. It feels out of character for Nona’s personality but also very fitting when you see how she protects Hessa. And that’s when I guessed that she probably was not going to be Sister Thorn. Sister Cage is a much more interesting name and personal to Nona. She always feels trapped. She was in her village isolated from the others, in a cage with Giljohn, the fight ring isolated after she killed Tascis and lost Saida, imprisoned for murder, and now trapped at the convent. The latter not necessarily being a negative but she has always been in a cage it seems all of her life and really is a perfect name for her. And lastly, after reading the prologue to the second part, I’m very excited to see what will happen.

How to Convert 3D video with 3D Converter on Windows 10/8/7 Step 1.
