(2/2) Some detail photos. The framing materials surrounding the art are all 100% archival. The work is hinged using pendant hinges made from Japanese paper, and rice starch paste, which we make ourselves. Four-ply shims were also installed, between the matted work and the glazing. The watercolor is matted in a 12-ply Rising Warm White mat, custom cut by our mat-makers. The frame is glazed in OP3 acrylic, which filters out UV rays. #watercolor #gertrudeespenscheid #customframes #barkframeworks #gilding #matmaking #hinging #archival #artpreservation #conservator #artcollector #artistsframes #esop #handmade #craftsmanship https://www.instagram.com/p/B2pXSFoldVU/?igshid=1ft41mfpmijuw

(1/2) The final gilded frame with its watercolor artwork by Gertrude Espenscheid. Our client was thrilled to see this work in its new, gilded frame, which not only set off the tones in the watercolor nicely, but also will protect the art for generations to come. (1/2) Customization, illustrated: Our team of artisans can create finishes that work in dialogue with your art. Here, an ink and watercolor on paper by Gertrude Espenscheid we recently framed for a collector in Brooklyn. The client worked with designer Christine Heindl to select a frame design, matting, and glazing for the work. Together, the two chose a custom paint casein finish for the frame. Bark craftsman Victor Liz applied the finish by hand. The frame profile is a variation of our Morgan design (originally created for @themorganlibrary ); the matting is 100% cotton Rising Olde White; and the glazing is OP3. #customframing #BarkFrameworks #FramedbyBark #artistsframes #GertrudeEspenscheid #illustration #handfinishing #customcasein #artcollectors #paintcasein #galleryframes #fineartframing #craftsmanship #nycframers #customframing (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/Chk402ilI2X/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Continuing from last week's post about our Espenscheid frame: The textured middle panel of the frame was created before the gilding process by Bark artisan Victor Liz. After our miller, Brian Smith, had given the lengths of the frame sides to Victor, he sourced a natural fiber textile (shown here) which he then glued down into the middle panel of the frame. To create a clean edge on the textile pattern, Victor burned off the loose edges of the textile. After the frame was joined, that panel was coated with gesso, clayed, gilded, burnished, and toned with the rest of the frame, creating an organic texture reminiscent of nature that compliments the watercolor nicely (detail: second photo). #texturedframe #gilding #BarkFrameworks #whitegold #customframes #artisans #naturalfibers #nycframers #instagramprivacy #textile #ribbon #craftsmanship #goldframe #watercolor #gertrudeespenscheid #americanart #madeinnyc #madebyhand https://www.instagram.com/p/B2fLjFkF0YD/?igshid=arcyujk7lhfb

After the Espenscheid frame has been burnished, Mary Helen O'Brien rubs the frame’s surface with a pumice powder, which abrades the gold to reveal the clay, and softens the appearance of the fresh gilding. Per Christine Heindl, the frame’s designer, the directions are for the rub to be medium heavy. After the rub, a lacquer is applied. The lacquer provides a protective coating, as white gold has a tendency to tarnish. The second image shows a detail of the frame after it has been toned with a thin coating of pigments, to “tone” down the bright, new gilding. #gilding #BarkFrameworks #customframes #whitegold #GertrudeEspenscheid #burnishing #mediumrub #woodshop #nycframers #madeinNYC #rub #craftsmanship #customwork #esop https://www.instagram.com/p/B2XX5H8FQ3I/?igshid=1dqf6mmydzmjz

(2/2) Our client worked with Bark designer Christine Heindl to create a frame that would best suit the watercolor. They reviewed a few options, including some of Bark’s named profiles (the Oyster Knife profile is shown here, at bottom right), Dutch-influenced profiles, ornamental profiles, and gilded profiles. Ultimately, a modified version of the gilded profile with ornamental detail (top left, inner frame profile) was selected. Christine’s design made the frame wider overall, allowing for the inner and outer panels to be more proportionate with the middle, decorative panel. A 12kt white gold was chosen for the gilding – halfway between warm and cool – which the both felt would set off the tones of the watercolor. Red clay (bole) was chosen for beneath the gold leaf, to bring out the reddish and brown tones of the work. #craftsmanship #gildedframes #artcollectors #BarkFrameworks #gertrudeespenscheid #framedesign #artonpaper #worksonpaper #watercolors #periodframes #dutchframes #woodworking #arthistory #artcollectors #americanart #modernart #contemporaryart #madeinNYC #employeeowned (at Bark Frameworks) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2NCE8klljU/?igshid=fwaovm83ogmj

(1/2) The start of a multi-day post: We often have collectors bring artworks to our shop that they want to reframe. Sometimes it’s an aesthetic decision; other times they are interested in using more archival materials for the protection of the artwork. Sometimes, as in the case of this framing project, it’s for both reasons. Recently, a collector client brought in a watercolor by the late American illustrator [and @Pratt institute alumna] Gertrude Elliott Espenscheid. The artwork -- pictured here in its old frame -- was a family heirloom, and the client wanted a frame that better complimented the art. There was also a preservation issue, as the frame was beginning to rust, had a few gaps on the sides, and the client wasn’t sure how protective the current glazing on the frame was... #artcollectors #fineartframing #gertrudeespenscheid #barkframeworks #customframes #framedesign #watercolor #worksonpaper #artonpaper #artistsframes #galleryframes #craftsmanship #customframersnyc #madeinNYC #esop https://www.instagram.com/p/B2NBmH7lZmP/?igshid=a5z3pyc5txhi
