You know I took a moment off because I really wanted my blog to go in a different direction (I never meant for GetAtMe to be a hiphop industry pander piece…) It became clear to me that hiphop marketers were turning the digital hiphop marketing segment into a circus of foolishness (and I chose not to be one of the clowns so I took a step back…) Many of the artist and songs I profile on GetAtMe, I don’t know these people, and at times I’ve gone out of my way not to know the artist because I really wanted to be the voice for great music for djs in all genres (I know it sound corny but that’s the real…). I didn’t want relationships clouding my views (and really, I’m not into being a groupie at all…) I didn’t do GetAtMe for clout and I really wasn’t interested in it as an entrepreneurial pursuit. I just wanted to find hot new songs (not nesseccarily artist…) and let the djs gauge the info for themselves. I wanted to deliver information like Nelson George did when he was the editor of urban music for Billboard magazine. Entertaining, witty and informative stories on songs, artist and the industry. Somehow this thing GetAtMe became something else and now I want GetAtMe back. So I had to change it up and I will be driving home the point that sales is the only weight that matters (F*ck the industry politics…). Your value as an artist is how many times a customer goes in their pocket (know this and embrace it…) Like I said before, if your friends would rather buy a Black and Mild cigarette as opposed to your music, then that says it all. You got work to do. It easy to say “I got you…” it’s more profitable when they buy the music (remember a stream is an excuse for why they didn’t buy. You don’t have to go in that pocket to do a stream. It takes a different type of commitment to buy. When I first heard this cut I was like wow, “This thing here is strong…” Mahalia’s DO NOT DISTURB needs to disturb the dj in you. This one’s hot. Here’s the TrackView: • TRACK 5 ($$$$$) Man this track jumps right at you from the intro break. This production is real dance music (reminds you of a Lisa Stansfield track. What’s going on in the UK… #NewMusic ) • PERFORMANCE 5 ($$$$$) Mahalia rides this cut like a pro. This song is put together very well… (man she’s got a voice… #ItsAHit ) • SONG 5 ($$$$$) This song is hot and with the right dj support, it can make moves. Mahalia has developed an underground following that show plenty of support in the mud. Now they need to show support on itunes and she will click in… #RealFansBuy • MUSCLE 1.7 ($.7) This artist has developed a quiet following that has to emerge for her to grow. She needs RNB mixtapes and a stronger street buzz.. Online is starting her conversation for now. As more bloggers and influencers become more aware of her then we should see more interest… #DjAlert • JUICE 1.5 ($.5) The MUSCLE (streets/mixtapes & online/media) has to really engage on this one for the JUICE (dj/clubs & radio) to really get any momentum. This is a great song although… #LetsGetIt • HITFACTOR 3.6 ($$$.6) This is a great song but the other factors must be in place for this cut to work (as in the case of most songs…) This is why itunes sales are so important cause it let’s influencers know a song has real market legs and it can make it… (this is a strong cut. • TOTAL 21.8 (grade B) This cut gets a B grade just on the song alone... This Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion record WAPS has come out of nowhere. This slow grinding beat has the initial making of a hit record. Megan has created a way of staying relevant by featuring with acts that will keep her relevant. This cut with Cardi was an excellently executed move. Here’s the Stats: Track 2.9pts- this track (with the repeat anthem “there’s some hoes in this house”) is a thumping slow groove that works (good)... PERFORMANCE 4.1pts- Cardi and Megan did their thing on this cut. These lyrics are cleverly raunchy. The message “CERTIFIED FREAK’ is unapologetically delivered (Hot)... MUSCLE 5.0PTS- The muscle on this cut is crazy (it went right to #10 on itunes day one. This was just on pre pub online. That’s crazy (Hit)... JUICE- 3.7pts- Its going to be interesting to see how radio handles this very sexually provocative cut #Hmmm (Heat)... When I first met Vic, I had a music rag (newsletter) called ON THE BEAT. It was the precursor to GETATME. It was a quick InSite to what was happening in urban club music in Atlanta.
