When I found out about this fascinating corn variety a couple of years ago, I’ve been wanting to take color match photos of the stunning multicolor kernels.

Its origin traces back to Carl Barnes, a part-Cherokee farmer living in Oklahoma. Barnes had an uncanny knack for corn breeding. More specifically, he excelled at selecting and saving seed from those cobs that exhibited vivid, translucent colors. After many years, his painstaking efforts created this wondrous corn cultivar called Glass Gem Corn.

As an experiment, we planted some “Glass Gem” corn in the garden. A tiny packet of seed corn was given to us by a daughter. We had room for only a few plants, so we didn’t have high hopes that it would pollinate well. Today we pulled back the husks and found precious little ears of corn!

The garden is officially not growing anything anymore. I have a lot to haul out to the burn pile, but that can happen on a day that’s not so miserable and blustery. The tomato plants are pulled and all green tomatoes harvested. The two tiny pumpkins 🎃 are out as are the cantaloupe 🍈 and carrots 🥕 and honeynut squash, and the herb pots are inside for the winter. I have a lot of dirt under my nails and I, as usual, injured myself.
