For the Get Messy Season of X. Why Does (Almost) Everyone Forget About Generation X? Collage, acrylic paint, gel plate printing, Posca paint pen. # (FYI: I am a white US-born 1966 Gen Xer living in the Midwest and my perspective reflects that.) # We grew up with our early memories of the moon landing, Vietnam War, Watergate, Nixon’s impeachment, Patty Hearst, and the US Bicentennial. We came of age under Reagan and the AIDS crisis, with a side of MTV. Apparently we were "the last generation in the United State for whom post-secondary education was broadly financially remunerative" (Wikipedia), although the cracks were starting to show - it started to take us five, six, seven years to complete four-year college degrees. # We were latch-key kids, slackers, grunge, hip-hop, alternative, punk. We remember the deaths of Elvis, John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain, and more. After 12 horrific years of Reagan/Bush Sr, we rejoiced when Bill Clinton was elected, yet remained deeply, deeply cynical. # We remember the advent of pocket calculators and home computers and the internet, yet some of us still grew up with multiparty telephone lines (NOT as fun as they sound) and black & white TV. We confused our Boomer parents because we definitely weren’t following their paths.
