Spencer's text tone is what gives him away, because he's not interested enough in the device to use it for anything other than necessity. But the familiar whistle has everyone digging in their pockets until they see Spencer reaching into his own bag.
"Reid, I don't think it's your landline," Prentiss snickers, checking her own phone to find a blank screen.
"I got a new phone yesterday." Spencer grumbles, "And I keep forgetting to ask Y/N how to turn the sounds off."
Penelope blinks at Spencer owlishly as he retracts a brand new, shiny iPhone from his messenger bag, default background shining especially bright against the dark wood table. She'll tell him later that it's the switch on the left side, but now she gawps, "Spencer, you got a new phone?"
"That's what I said, isn't it?" He already looks mildly annoyed at the teasing, probably because he'd stubbornly stuck to his outdated mobile for so long that his pride has an iPhone-shaped bruise.
"What made you make the change?" Hotch asks, voice gentler but curious all the same.
"Yeah, I've been begging you for, like, years, Reid." Garcia frowns, "Texting me isn't really texting me if I can't send you gifs from the gif keyboard."
"She favors the one of the dancing baby," Rossi drawls, "But I'm sure that's not what Dr. Reid felt compelled to upgrade for."
The notification that's displayed across his screen is a message from you, but that's predictable because he'd adamantly refused to get notifications from anything but text messages and calls. He's still partial to his newspapers, and he won't fill an online grocery cart if he can help it.

There's not much he can see from the little thumbnail to the right of the notification, but- it's enough. It's the color of your skin, mostly the color of your skin, with splashes of red in between. He knows he can't open it now, and he wishes he had just a little more experience with situations like this so that he could maintain some composure.
"Uhm," He starts, cheeks most likely bright pink, "I don't know, I just- I just thought it was time, probably. Y/N says she didn't like that my messages were green."
"Oh, it's Y/N," Morgan croons, and JJ consoles Garcia with a sympathetic smile and a pat to the arm.
"Well-! And, and it's good for the GPS, but I do still prefer paper maps," Spencer rambles, "And it's- it's nice to see how many literary-themed emailing lists there are."
"Emailing lists," Morgan scoffs, "Pretty boy, you're signing up for spam. But whatever text has got you blushing there isn't about Shakespeare. Just let me know when you need a lesson in taking your own pictures, m'kay? She doesn't want weird angles or bad lighting, trust me."

The Friendly Hero AU: At first Bakugou is irritated yeah? Cause those idiots 'are playing with dolls'.
And then he notices.
Iida alters his armor to have a little cockpit in his chest for Temari, and adds an earpiece so they can communicate, the little Persocom having gotten access to satelite pictures to better guide him. A map that is always up to date. (He ignores the fact that Tenya altered an old phone to serve as a tablet so Temari would be able to read all the books she wants comfortably.)
Uraraka and Asui don't alter their suits other than adding a GPS tracker and a com unit, while Hoshi and Kaeru get the same upgrades: an emergency light, plus a GPS feature. Perfect for rescue, as they can enter small places and search. (Hoshi likes dancing, and so Ochako asks Mina for lessons for the both of them. Kaeru is fascinated by animal biology, so Tsu asks Kouji for suggestions in books and shows to watch. Bakugou makes no notice of this.)
Yaoyoruzu gets rid of the book and replaces it with a sleek gauntlet at the suggestion of Himeko, who makes sure to study every strategy book she can find to help, while also keeping a calendar of events the Heiress needs to attend. (Himeko enjoys fashion and Momo makes her modified, fashionable little buttler suits, since they're the only thing she wants to wear.)
The only one who doesn't use his Persocom for Hero Work is Todoroki. Bakugou thinks he's an even bigger idiot than the others. (Because Tatsuo is kind and doesn't like violence. She inspires Shouto to be kinder, something he didn't fully think he could do.)
That's when he notices how useful the Persocoms are, and he seethes when Izuku doesn't give him one.
So when he sees an extra Persocom in the dorms, wandering about? One that he recognizes?
All hell breaks loose.
(Katsumi only wanted to check in on her sisters. To see if they were truly safe with their Caregivers. She hadn't meant to be seen, and not by him!)
(During the commotion that happens afterwards, Hoshi flies under the counter she'd hidden and rescues her. Takes her straight to Fathers waiting hands, where she's safe.)
"For fuck sakes- that thing is-"
"Katsumi is not a thing!" Kouda was actually talking. Rikkido took a minute to be surprised by that before he focused on Bakugou, who looked angrier than before.
"It's a doll—" the blonde tried to say, but no one listened. Even after Aizawa-sensei sat them down to explain how Midoriya's Quirk worked and that they were alive, possessing a degree of sentience not unlike a dolphin, Bakugou refused to listen. No one understood why he refused to believe what was facing him.
Rikkido, in his professional standing as a very bored Reddit Doom Scroller, would say Bakugou didn't want to admit he was in the wrong because he would need to face the fact that he basically tried to kill a living being. Bakugou was an asshole, Rikkido knew. He was a dick, unpleasent to be around, frustrating and so many other things to call the guy.
Yet Bakugou at his core wouldn't be okay knowing he tried to kill a sentient being. Rikkido didn't blame the guy; it was horrific.
But still, you couldn't pull an ostritch attempt forever. Eventually he would have to realize how he fucked up.
Rikkido noticed Hoshi sneaking Katsumi away and let out a soft sigh of relief.
Izuku would take care of her. They had to take care of Bakugou.

A new era of solar observation
For the first time, scientists have taken near-daily measurements of the Sun’s global coronal magnetic field, a region of the Sun that has only been observed irregularly in the past. The resulting observations are providing valuable insights into the processes that drive the intense solar storms that impact fundamental technologies, and thus lives and livelihoods, here on Earth.
An analysis of the data, collected over eight months by an instrument called the Upgraded Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (UCoMP), is published today in Science.
The solar magnetic field is the primary driver of solar storms, which can pose threats to power grids, communication systems, and in-space technologies like GPS. However, our ability to understand how the magnetic field builds up energy and erupts has been limited by the challenge of observing it in the solar corona, the Sun’s upper atmosphere. 
Measuring the magnetism of the region through standard polarimetric methods typically requires large, expensive equipment that to date has only been able to study small segments of the corona. However, the combined use of coronal seismology and UCoMP observations makes it possible for researchers to produce consistent and comprehensive views of the magnetic field of the global corona  — the whole-Sun view one sees during a solar eclipse. 
“Global mapping of the coronal magnetic field has been a big missing part in the study of the Sun,” said Zihao Yang, lead author who pursued this research as a PhD graduate at Peking University, China, and is now a postdoctoral fellow at the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR). “This research is helping us fill a crucial gap in our understanding of coronal magnetic fields, which are the source of the energy for storms that can impact Earth.​”  
The international team is made of researchers from Northumbria University, UK; NSF NCAR; Peking University, China; and University of Michigan. The research was funded by a grant from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Key R&D Program of China and supported by the Newkirk graduate student fellowship awarded to Yang by NSF NCAR. The UCoMP instrument was developed with support from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and is operated by NSF NCAR at the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory.
Upgraded instrument
Although scientists have been able to routinely measure the magnetic field on the Sun’s surface, known as the photosphere, it has long been difficult to measure the much dimmer coronal magnetic field. This has limited a deeper understanding of the three-dimensional structure and evolution of the magnetic field of the corona, where solar storms brew.
To measure the three-dimensional coronal magnetic fields in depth, big telescopes like NSF’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) are needed. With a 4-meter-diameter aperture, DKIST is the world’s largest solar telescope, and recently demonstrated its groundbreaking ability for making detailed observations  of the coronal magnetic field. However, DKIST is not able to map the Sun all at once. The smaller UCoMP instrument is actually better-suited to give scientists global pictures of the coronal magnetic field, albeit at lower resolution and in a two-dimensional projection. The observations from both sources are thus highly-complementary to a holistic view of the coronal magnetic field.
UCoMP is primarily a coronagraph, an instrument that uses a disc to block out light from the Sun, similar to an eclipse, making it easier to observe the corona. It also combines a Stokes polarimeter, which images other spectral information such as coronal line intensity and Doppler velocity. Even though UCoMP has a much smaller aperture (20 cm), it is able to take a wider view which makes it possible to study the entire Sun on most days.  
The researchers applied a method called coronal seismology to track magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) transverse waves in the UCoMP data. The MHD waves gave them information that made it possible to create a two-dimensional map of the strength and direction of the coronal magnetic field.
In 2020, a previous study used UCoMP’s predecessor and the coronal seismology method to produce the first map of the global coronal magnetic field. This was a crucial step toward routine coronal magnetic field measurements. UCoMP has expanded capabilities that makes it possible to make more detailed, routine measurements. During the UCoMP study, the research team produced 114 magnetic field maps between February and October 2022, or one almost every other day. 
“We are entering a new era of solar physics research where we can routinely measure the coronal magnetic field,” said Yang. 
Completing the picture
The observations also produced the first measurements of the coronal magnetic field in the polar regions. The Sun’s poles have never been directly observed because the curve of the Sun near the poles keeps it just beyond our view from Earth. Though the researchers didn’t directly view the poles, for the first time they were able to take measurements of the magnetism emitting from them. This was due in part to the improved data quality provided by UCoMP and because the Sun was near solar maximum. The typically weak emissions from the polar region have been much stronger, making it easier to obtain coronal magnetic field results in the polar regions. 
As a postdoctoral fellow at NSF NCAR, Yang will continue his research of the Sun’s magnetic field; he hopes to improve existing coronal models that are based on measurements of the photosphere. Since the current method used with UCoMP is limited to two dimensions, it still doesn’t capture the full three-dimensional magnetic field. Yang and his colleagues hope to combine their research with other techniques to get a deeper understanding of the full vector of the magnetic field in the corona. 
The third dimension of the magnetic field, oriented along a viewer's line of sight, is of particular importance for understanding how the corona is energized leading up to a solar eruption. Ultimately, a combination of a large telescope and a global field of view is needed to measure all the three-dimensional twists and tangles behind phenomena like solar eruptions; this is the motivation behind the proposed Coronal Solar Magnetism Observatory (COSMO), a 1.5-meter-diameter solar refracting telescope undergoing its final design study.
“Since coronal magnetism is the force that sends mass from the Sun flying across the solar system, we have to observe it in 3D — and everywhere all at once, throughout the global corona,” said Sarah Gibson, COSMO Development Lead and an NSF NCAR scientist co-author on the paper. "Yang's work represents a huge step forward in our ability to understand how the Sun's global coronal magnetic field changes from day to day. This is critical to our ability to better predict and prepare for solar storms, which are an ever-increasing danger to our ever-more technologically dependent lives here on Earth."

Poll results are in! Euphi lore time!
When someone is a "Protogen", that's not their birth species. They could've been anything. A dog, a cat, a fox, a snake, a bear, a shark, whatever. Some may still identify as what they were born as. Others might not. Sometimes someone may have suffered a severe injury, or had a debilitating birth defect that makes life for them hard. When that happens, they may, if they choose, be augmented into a Protogen. Replaced limbs, digital faces, even completely mechanical organs. Different Protogens may be differing levels of mechanical. Some may have just needed a prosthetic arm, others may need their face replaced. Some may not even look like anything is mechanical at all, since it's just organs that were replaced. Euphi is one of those who are more machine than meat.
300 years Before Present. In a long gone country deep in the frozen North. The medic of a field expedition team, Euphi [LAST NAME REDACTED], has been missing for 14 hours. Being missing for that long in an environment such as this is almost certain death. She was found, half a mile from camp. Nobody knows what happened to her. Well, nobody still alive, anyway. But we do know that Euphi's face, arms and upper legs were unsalvageable. Her organs had almost completely failed, being kept alive by a weak, panicked heart. Given that it's the medic currently in need of immediate care, all the team could do was try and stabilize her until an extraction team could be brought in to save her. Bandages, CPR, splints, keep her in a sterile environment. They weren't trained for this, but you pick some things up. Plus, everyone is supposed to know how to cover a wound.
Help arrives. Euphi is still alive, barely. There's no time to wait to reach a hospital, she needs help now, on the helicopter. A temporary "face" is attached. Just enough to stop the pain, let her breath, get some words out. She can't see, can't emote. The voice is monotone.
Her memory is practically gone. She knows her name, her personality is intact, she always was a little overprotective, and she's still trying to act like everything is fine. But it's not. Nothing is fine. The only working organs she has are her brain, heart, and lungs. Just enough for her to live right now, but that's not going to last. She can't remember where she is, what she does, who anyone is, her childhood, her medical training. She's back to square one.
They land at a hospital. Which one? Doesn't matter, it's long gone now. New arms are needed, reattach the lower legs, it's easier to reattach them when the pelvis is metal too, is that ok? That temporary face has served her well, but this one will work better. Those old, dead organs? We need to replace those. These new parts can be powered much the same way as the originals, so a digestive system will be needed. Make a new way to dispose of bodily waste. Water isn't safe for these parts, so bathrooms are a dangerous place. You can repackage waste from the body as a biofuel. Clear out the dangerous stuff, expell it as a gas, the rest goes back in, like eating the same food 3 or 4 times in a row.
She'll need therapy. She's traumatized, she's confused, she can barely walk. Years pass, she's doing better. She can walk, she's at least recalled her medical training, she can go back to work. But her work isn't needed anymore. You don't need to go on expeditions when the world is fully mapped! Isn't the GPS incredible?
Something's off. It's been what, 30 years since that day? She hasn't aged a bit! Not that you could tell, there's not much organic stuff to age. She's gotten some part upgrades since then. New hands for better dexterity. A new face, this one has a clearer voice! She's developed a strong attachment to her heart. It kept her alive when nothing else could. If you asked Euphi, this is when She/Heart started to feel right.
Another 40 years. The original doctor that saved heart is dead. That expedition team is mostly dead. Euphi is same as always. Something's not right. Those mechanical bits have more or less taken priority in this body. More machine than mortal, and that means?
Immortality. Euphi won't be aging anymore.
Another 30 years, that country was absorbed into another. 100 years, nobody alive has met Euphi before. Faces pass, lovers are born, die, and new ones fill their place. Euphi has never known what it's been like to meet someone even half heart age. It's lonely. At least life isn't hard when you've got disability benefits from the government, plus your old money from back then.
Today. Well, maybe a month ago? It's hard to keep track of time when a day for you feels more like a second. Relaxing in a bar, buying drinks for people she's only known for a few minutes, with money worth magnitudes more than she remembers. This 1 Dollar note is worth 2 million? Well I guess it is kinda old.
Someone walks in. Two people actually. A wolf, angry and confused. A bird-thing. The bird immediately starts flirting with the bartender. Where's the wolf's mouth? Someone approaches the bird, pulls a knife. Uh oh, this could get-
Where's that guy go? Did the wolf always have that sandwich? People clear out. It's just those two, and Euphi. A conversation.
Abandoned by your family? On the run? You're half-demon? Wait how old are you? 180!? Funny, I'm actually somewhere around 350! Oh so that's where your mouth went.
From another planet? Oh, your an Avali! He/They gotcha. Never went to school? You poor thing!
She's found them. Someone she can really relate to, in a way, and someone who could use some help. She worked as a teacher for a good 40 years, plenty of time to get degrees when you aren't dying any time soon.
And, well, I think we have an idea of what happens from here.

Approach
Bolton Bridge, just off the A66 north of Appleby represented a convenient low starting point for the tour allowing me to claim the 200m climb requirement. There are a few parking places which were popular with fishermen when I arrived. The route via Kings Meaburn has a fair bit of up and down, and I made a wrong turn which added more.

The climb is on the easy side of moderate, with the 7-10% sections short enough for the bike to be kept in Eco Mode. There are two high points each at 322m elevation, the first is near Linglow Hill, but the climb really completes at the second one at Raise Howe, which is more interesting. The only photo I have is a timer one of me by the bike, which I won't bore you with (see below for link to third party photos)

Great Asby has been settled since the Stone Age. You can read about its History here.
High to the south of the route is Great Asby Scar, (see map) a large area of limestone pavement that has been unspoiled by quarrying, and now preserved as an Site of Special Scientific Interest and Nature Reserve as it contains and attracts rare flora and fauna. Wikipedia Visit Cumbria
The “Tumulus” marked on the map at Raise Howe is a bronze age “cairn” earthworks. I will have a closer look if I go again from the other side, meanwhile you can see more here. The nearby quarry is more modern, and was most likely used to supply material for McAdaming of the road.
The road back passes through the picturesque village of Maulds Meaburn, you can read how it got its name here. The impressive Flass House was built in the 19th Century on the profits of the opium trade. To complete the circle, it was more recently purchased by some dodgy types for the purpose of growing and processing cannabis and allowed to run into disrepair, but has since been revived as a performing arts school. New graphs
The graph of elevation and gradient is taken from some software I wrote to interpret the GPX / TCX files recorded on my phone / Watch and produce more detailed data than hitherto available. Unfortunately the phone’s GPS isn't that accurate when it comes to altitude, so some intervention and processing is required to get rid of errors that give rise to exaggerated climb and gradients. The software still needs upgrading to display other information and a bit of tweaking to improve presentation.
