Introduction to Puppetry Arts

Introduction to Puppetry Arts by Cheralyn Lambeth is a particularly useful paper I've read recently. It talks about the history, the types of puppetry, and the simple process of making it. I've made some summaries below to make it easier to find when you need it.

Introduction

Puppetry can be traced back to ancient Egypt, India and Greece. It is a very ancient form of theatre or performance art.

The performers, also known as puppeteers, animate inanimate objects, known as puppets, by means of control devices such as rods or strings.

There are many different types of puppets, both simple and complex, and they can also be made of different types of material.

1.  Finger Puppet

is the smallest, and simplest type of puppet forms which dits onto the puppeteer’s finger and easy to control.

2. Hand Puppet

is also known as glove puppet. It fits over the puppeteer’s hand or arm and also easy to control.

The hand puppet has a soft hollow body that the performer puts over the performer's hand or arm like a glove and uses the fingers and hands to manipulate the puppet. The puppet usually consists of a head made of wood, cloth or papier-mâché, with a human body or hand appearing below the neck. The puppeteer can control the head as well as manipulate it with his fingers. Usually, these puppets do not have legs, as the puppeteer's arms already give the audience the illusion of a lower body. However, there are sometimes hand puppets with legs, which can be hung freely or manipulated by the puppeteer, depending on their purpose and function.

This is also one of the types of hand puppet, but with an articulated mouth, which simply means that the puppet's mouth can be opened and closed by the hand of the puppeteer. This type of puppet is usually made of a flexible material such as foam or fabric. The purpose of this is to allow the puppeteer to control the puppet. In operation, the performer's movements are usually synchronised with the closing of the puppet's mouth.

Simple puppets of this type can be made from socks or complex ones.
