A KING…. we love him so much…. a legend!!! a man who loves his girlfriend, punches nazis, and supports a woman’s choice to her own body! supports his girlfriend working at the cabaret and is very accepting to the people there!

2. mischa bachinski - ride the cyclone

an absolute legend! another man who absolutely loves his girlfriend, canonically kisses another man and has watched all seasons of drag race! he might seem tough on the inside but… he is the biggest softie in the world

another bisexual legend i think. yes he might have cheated, but he wasn’t homophobic or full of any prejudice towards the people living in the mansion like his fiancé janet! so we love him for that…

ok my rambling thoughts

first of all. moritz was absolutely incredible. he was a FRESHMAN and he was so fucking good i literally cried. his don't do sadness?? AMAZING. He reminded me so much of jgj too i was in love. lets hang out.

melchior was kind of weird, his voice wasn't so strong but he did make some really fun acting choices. i kind of felt like the guy they had playing otto should have played melchior bc his voice was more interesting but idk i did not cast the production.

wendla was awesome! she had some really good moments especially during whispering and when she was talking to melchior. loved her. her voice was also beautiful!

HANSCHEN i loved hanschen sorry the actress redeemed herself she slayed so hard. the vineyard scene was so touching and beautiful and i cried. also hanschen and ernst went off hand in hand during left behind.... nice detaul

martha's voice was absolutely amazing and the dark i know well was awesome. they staged it really well and it ended with this huge sound that was so like dread-inducing.

also getting to see bitch of living and totally fucked live for the first time i almost exploded. i literally almost died. it was so crazy. they all flipped off the teachers during the first blaj blah blah like mY GODDD and the LIGHTING and the SET WAS INCREDIBLEEEEEEE WWEKJFHLKJREHFKEJRHg so yeah.

ok i didn't like the girls costumes very much they were kind of weird and not period accurate AND wendla was not wearing blue which i feel like is kind of a sin but whatever. they wore stuff that i feel like i see people wearing to class but with like a kind of german skirt and i just feel like there was some wasted potential. but that is coming from someone who has designed one million spring awakening costumes.

there was NO GUITAR!!! THEY PLAYED ALL THE GUITAR RIFFS ON THE PIANO???? and my friend was like omg this musical is so rockin and i said wait for the guitar riff in totally fucked its balls crazy and then it was on a PIANO. reprehensible. its a ROCK MUSICAL.

the choreograprhy was kind of weird sometimes, especially during mirror blue night, but i LOVED the end of bitch and touch me. like exactly what i (esteemed theater director gene totallytrucked) would have done.

overall it was literally incredible. i love this musical so much and getting to see it live was amazing and so emotional and so beautiful and moving and exciting and incredible and awesome and im running out of positive words but just know. i loved it so much. i am so happy. i will be listening to nothing but spring awakening for the next year.

sorry for this being long and for jumping in on this out of nowhere, i got excited and i missed talking about this show now that i’m once again in my yearly spring awakening phase thanks to seeing a local production yesterday :)

1. How were you introduced to the show?

i was an emo kid trying to find musicals i liked bc i started doing theater in high school, i saw american idiot was made into a musical, and followed the john gallagher jr rabbit hole to a b00tl3g of obc spring awakening. this happened to be in 2014 and when i heard about dwsa on broadway i conned my mom into taking me to nyc to see it (i didnt tell her how sexual it was i just said “it’s about teens coming of age in germany set to rock music” and she had Words for me during that intermission lol)

2. Seen a production live?

yes, four: dwsa, a local college production, and two productions at local theater companies in the areas i’ve lived

3. Dream role/character you relate to most

y’all already know it’s moritz…. i imprinted on him when i was 14 and have never stopped being obsessed with him as a character. but i think it’s more likely i’d get the chance to play ilse before moritz and i would love to play ilse as well

4. Favorite male character

wendla <3 she’s such a good character when she’s played with the right amount of joy, stubbornness, and curiosity

but if you force me to pick “a real song” that “is actually in the show” then… i think a production that has a really good “and then there were none” is killer bc it means 1. they’re focusing on my favorite boy moritz and 2. they have an adult woman who plays fanny gabor compassionately but flawed in a way that underscores the show’s themes around adults not trusting kids with their own minds and bodies. which i greatly enjoy

8. Least favorite song

this is unfair of me bc it never fails to make me cry and it has one of my favorite lyrics ever in it (window by window you try and look into this brave new you that you are) but it’s “the guilty ones” bc i think “there once was a pirate” is better. my hot take is that dwsa is only version of spring awakening i’ve ever seen where i actually prefer their use of guilty ones instead of pirate

musical: so maybe i should be some kind of laundry line / hang their things on me / and i will swing ‘em dry / you just wave in the sun through the afternoon / and then see / they come to set you free / beneath the rising moon - don’t do sadness it’s just such an evocative description of feeling hopeless against all the pressures of life and perfectly encapsulates being 15 and desperate and just wanting a little bit of relief. plus the way daniel durant and alex boniello performed this is so killer. moritz stiefel i love you

play: “don’t let’s be sad […] if we recall this in thirty years, perhaps we shall make fun of it.——and yet everything is so beautiful. the mountains glow; the grapes hang before our mouths and the evening breeze caresses the rocks like a playful flatterer.” from hans in the vineyard scene. augh it’s just so tender and lovely in a way that the musical doesn’t have the time/ability to address, with the acknowledgement that yes this moment is temporary and who knows if ernst and hanschen will “make it”. and yet. everything is so beautiful. also PROOF THAT HANSCHEN ISNT A CREEP OR MANIPULATIVE HE IS ALSO A TEEN BOY IN LOVE FUCK YOU STEVEN SATER

daniel durant always always always. he is such a talent i’m so glad his career seems to be taking off, he’s genuinely one of the best actors i’ve ever seen in my whole life.

can i say 1st national tour cabaret where the boys performed comet on its way in order to bring up comet on its way again. if not it’s when i gave daniel durant a painting of him as moritz at stage door and i was a shy anxious teen who learned just enough asl to say “hi” and “thank you” and “will you sign my playbill please” and he was SO sweet to me and lovely and he hugged me and i know actors do that kind of shit all the time and i’m sure he doesn’t remember it but it really made my whole life when it happened :’)

13. Do you write fan fiction?

not outside of personal catharsis pieces that have never seen the light of day. i made an aloto/vineyard scene web weaving post though that i do think goes hard

i still love the moritz and then there were none piece i did a few years ago but i haven’t done a whole lot past that… that may change though i want to get back into drawing

no, but spring awakening costumes have 10000% influenced my real life fashion and hair decisions. lol

i just saw this GORGEOUS performance of dds/bw where ilse sobbed through her verse of blue wind and the rest of the cast like gathered around her and slowly peeled away to represent her memory/longing for real connection and the reality of her never really having that at all, and really underscoring that her spoken lines about her new life in the artist’s colony and wanting to take moritz home are just posturing to hide how lonely she is… so right now i think blue wind

my junk! i love seeing the different ways it’s staged between georg and hanschen and the girls, plus it’s the only time the girls get to be horny

it’s a metatextual message from the story of spring awakening to the audience that underscores the themes of open and honest communication being the key to healthy people and relationships, it’s asking the adults in the audience to believe children (when they say they’re gay, when they ask for information and want to be given all of it, when they ask for help and say they want to die), it’s a message of hope to the kids in the seats who relate too much to the kids on stage, telling us that it will get better

I don't really follow the behind the scenes anecdotes either, but Jonathan Groff forgetting the lyrics to Left Behind except for "all things" is as inspirational as it is horrific to imagine going through. If he can get through that and live to tell the tale, then I can get through a bad day.

Also every time Michael Arden says, "All my best ideas come from [ Andy Mientus ]" is like d'aww they're cute together.

OBC I did not like the Reprise because even through the Discman (... that's a Walkman for CD's) I had the sense that it was a "comic relief" moment that relied on the existence of gay boys as the joke.

The Deaf West production kept a sense of respite and relief, and some comedy in the relationship dynamic between Ernst and Hanschen rather than playing on preexisting stereotypes...even though it didn't change a word of the script in that scene, which is amazing on a text analysis level like what happened who used the Captain Planet power ring with the power of heart in this scene, what sorcery is this?

So it depends, because the non-reprise Word of Your Body does a narrative job—Melchior haters can feel free to hate, but I can understand what the musical version was trying to go for with his character, and Word of Your Body was part of that.

Groff's Melchior came off more smarter-and-better-than-you but sort of giving up his pretensions in the process of seduction, and I can understand why that aspect might look appealing.

Doyle's Melchior doesn't have that "he's a ruthless boy but maybe i can change him"—I think he plays Melchior as more sad and desperate, and putting that energy into studying is how his Melchior thinks he gets a handle on his own feelings.

McKenzie's Melchior is an oafish, bookish 14-year-old boy trying to act smooth as he condescends to a Deaf girl. He has as much primal sexual energy as a newborn beagle puppy, which to be clear is none at all. I think that can be endearing, that he doesn't really know what he's blathering about in terms of life experience.

Wendla's a consistent constant performance-wise, all three versions I think balance out to a constant average...so it's really the Reprise that determines which one I like better.

OBC Reprise was very much worse than OBC Word of Your Body...but, Deaf West Reprise was a little better than Deaf West Word of Your Body and a lot better than the OBC Reprise. But I like the OBC Word of Your Body better than the Deaf West Reprise, at the same time that I like the Deaf West Word of Your Body an equal amount as the OBC Word of Your Body, contextualized comparatively being different than the chronological context that defines its vibe in an individual show's run time.

18. Touch Me or My Junk?

My Junk as a tune — but the Deaf West Touch Me did turn everybody into a boat, that was kinda cool.

19. Explain the song of purple summer.

Ilse recovered from her trauma and now owns her sexual identity, despite the history of everyone in her home and community doing their worst to her in ways that directly targeted that very intimate part of her. Her story is not the main plot of the show, but the fact that she survived and found personal definition means she now has her own voice on which to carry the wisdom of her life. That will be what heals and inspires others. Red or pink sunsets plus blue evenings make the sky in summer purple. At the end of the day, there still is beauty in living.

I always knew it existed, but one day on a long car drive I just decided to sit down and listen to it, and then everything clicked.

No, sadly. The most recent performance in my area was a high school that production last year -- it was a big deal but I could not make it.

I would literally kill to play Ilse! Unfortunately most of her songs are right over my first passaggio rip

For character I relate to the most? Some weird combination of Wendla’s naïveté and Melchior’s pretentious bitchiness.

Hanschen — there’s something so satisfying when you see him done right on stage (even though it’s rare).

It’s a summer they might not see, but the seasons are changing anyway.

3. Dream role/character you relate to most

i've been in love with wendla since i laid eyes on her and i would die to play her. im obsessed with her, she's got so much more depth than people realize and that was cut during the transition from play to musical fuck you s*ter and i would love to bring that to my rendition of her. and i was also assaulted when i was her age, i was also suicidal, i was also confused af and my mom was not helpful, i also wanted to be loved so badly, i just see a lot of my teenage self in wendla. i related to her so much when i first saw the show and that's a big reason i got so obsessed with it.

prob moritz or hanschen. they are 2 sides of the same dramatic ass coin. they also have daddy issues and are gay like girl me too.

all of them? wendla holds a special place in my heart but like. there is so much to love about all of them even anna and thea who we know almost nothing about have the building blocks of great characters. i've always loved combining what we know about the characters from both the musical and the play to make more complete characters especially because s*ter cut so much of the girls characterization bc he's a sexist pos fuck you and i def do that with anna and thea.

19. the word of your body reprise. i just don't like her she's boring she's such a diversion from the main plot and like hanschen and ernst are cute but this is just such a random ass song.

16. i believe. this song is insane and i love it so much and yet still it is at 16 which should show u how much all of this music means to me. it's a perfect underscore 2 the hayloft scene and vocally stunning but it doesnt really warrant listening to it on its own.

15. the dark i know well. I'M SORRY IT'S SO LOW this song has just never really stuck out to me. i think it's a beautifully haunting song and i adore lilli and lauren but it's just not a favorite of mine.

13. song of purple summer. it's a beautiful epilogue and it's very dear to my heart. but the lyrics are just too steven sater for it to be higher. why r we talking about horses in the song about learning from our loss and experiencing a beautiful summer despite the hardships of spring

12. mirror blue night. i just love how deep this song cuts into melchior's internal conflict. it's musically interesting and is a perfect transition into the hayloft scene imo

11. mama who bore me. i cannot imagine spring awakening starting any other way. it's quiet and understated and paints a perfect picture of longing and uncertainty. i love you wendla bergman

10. and then there were none. this song didn't ever hit as hard for me until i lived through it. it's just such an accurate depiction of the desperation for connection you feel when you fall that low. it is the kind of song that burrows into your soul and aches and i love it for that.

9. don't do sadness/blue wind. it's just so heartbreaking and there are about a billion different ways i could put into words what this song means to me. but i will spare you. you all know what i mean.

8. touch me. yes it's this low but that doesn't mean i don't adore it! it's one of the most beautiful songs on the tracklist imo and i love the imagery it uses to create a sort of universal desire that the entire ensemble shares.

7. my junk. this song is FUN! it's really the only song in spring awakening that is lighthearted and upbeat and it's just so refreshing. it's silly and it's cute and i love it.

6. left behind. this is the first song i heard from spring awakening so that connection will ALWAYS be there, but that aside, i really just love the way it puts grief into words- it explores what could have been and what never was and it is just so heartbreaking.

5. mama who bore me reprise. i just love the vocals in this song and that is genuinely it. this was my most listened to song of 2021 if you even care

4. the guilty ones. THE GUILTY ONES!!!! i am so thankful for this song (i am a there once was a pirate/pirate night hater btw). i think it does a great job exploring wendla and melchior's inner worlds and i'm glad that this song is what stuck.

3. the bitch of living. it is impossible to hear that guitar riff and not feel something. there is (almost.) nothing more Spring Awakening than moritz pulling out the mic and transforming into a rockstar and bringing us with him into his inner world. i love love love this song endlessly

2. those you've known. what a perfect ending to the story. i love moritz and wendla in this song and the way they are able to show melchior that death is not the way out. melchior's decision to keep living for the friends he's lost is so deeply moving and i love the way this song closes his arc with the same motif that opens it: i'm calling, and one day all will know. those you've known is just an absolutely perfect song.

1. totally fucked. totally fucked is spring awakening. experiencing this song live was just entirely unreal. this song becomes an outlet for all the anger you've ever felt and it just has a way of making you feel powerful even in situations when you are powerless. it is the anthem of the kids who the system has let down and i just think that's what spring awakening is all about.

thank you!!!!! i am Manifesting moritz but i would genuinely be happy with any role at all <3 i'm also gonna be genuinely happy if i don't get in because i can still see the show!!!!!

i genuinely think i have a pretty good shot at moritz (his vocal stuff is all in my range and in my vocal style, i can absolutely act the part, and i have enough dance training to pass a movement call) but i'm trying not to get my hopes up because i want to be Realistic, you know???

wendla get a seperate little thing because as much as i would want to play her (and i think do a pretty good job because she is my ultimate blorbo from this show), i would Not be comfortable with her usual type of onstage nudity. if they changed it, her vocal stuff is still too high for me, but a guy can dream. also i would much prefer to have a male role in this show because of my current gender situation but i want to be Open to Anything because i would kill to be in this silly little show i love so much <3
