My Undying Respect for John Mayer/Happy Birthday
Tumblr media
Music is a desertion of the real world, a refuge, a therapy session where solace is found. It's an artists job to supply this refuge, to give that feeling of understanding and companionship. As our society and music industry steers further and further away from vocals, real instruments, and reputable lasting music in general, I find myself so thankful for artists like John Mayer. I have never been so honored to be a fan of such a talented musician and human being, and I'm so grateful that artists like him still exist.
Those who know me know the level of respect I have for this creature which goes beyond his beautiful eyes, tall dark and handsome configuration, and misunderstood smile. His music was the first to ever allow me to feel something more than the simple pleasure of listening.
I remember the first time I heard Split Screen Sadness I was 15 and going through, at the time, what I thought was heartbreak. I must have played Heavier Things 2,000 times. I remember wondering how someone could turn the agony of heartbreak into something so incredibly beautiful and honest:
"I called because I just Need to feel you on the line Don't hang up this time And I know it was me who called it over but I still wish you'd fought me 'til your dying day Don't let me get away"
His music fascinated me, the way that he knew how to compile words and explain love and loss in such a metaphoric way mesmerized me. Instead of being a "fan girl" (so to speak) I studied and adored his work.
I finally got the first chance to see him live on his Battle Studies tour right after I graduated high school. My friend and I bought $50 tickets off of some guy and we were in the very last row, of the very last section, of the Staples Center. We could barley see him at all but his music encompassed the room and it didn't matter. While he was doing his thank yous he called out our specific section of the arena and said "this ones for you section 317, thanks for coming out despite the fact that you have to watch me on the screen." He then proceeded to play Why Georgia a song that I loved, but didn't realize the significance of until I hit the phenomena of my own 20-something quarter life crisis myself, "Am I living it right?"
With John Mayer there's a song for every feeling. Without knowing so he's helped me through some pretty tough, critical times in my life. Going through a rough breakup, there was extreme vulnerability and fear in feeling like love was the unattainable goal that kept me on an ongoing loop of disappointment. This feeling was paralleled in his music:
"Young and full of running tell me where is that taking me? just a great figure eight or a tiny infinity?"
I don't know where to put an end to the ramblings of my adoration or the affects that his music and words have had on me, but I probably should here because I could go on forever. It's a really exceptional feeling to respect an artist who has unknowingly been there through specific incidents in life. So for that, thank you John Mayer I'll be patiently awaiting our next therapy session. Oh and Happy Birthday.
