Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader (Regency AU)

A/N: Written for the @the-ss-horniest-book-club for the Regency Theme Day! I’ll be honest, I don’t know much about the era, and I haven’t watched Bridgerton, but I had fun writing this little romantic story anyways. I was inspired by the amazing edit by @nix-akimbo featured in the moodboard, doesn’t Bucky look so gorgeous and regal?

You smoothed your hands down your dress nervously, taking a breath before stepping into the room and meandering through the crowd. You exchanged pleasantries with some of the other patrons, tugging your gloves higher, thankful for the mask that covered part of your face. It was a nice way to mingle with many of the town’s socialites, a masquerade ball, and while it wasn’t the fanciest events with much of the pomp and circumstance of the royal families, many of the town’s upper and middle class citizens were able to attend. It was a nice escape from the drudgery of your uneventful, day to day life.

A passing attendant with a tray of champagne helped to calm your nerves, and you willed yourself to relax as the bubbles danced on your tongue. Would he be here? It was a silly question; of course he would. You were, however, starting to feel uncomfortable and a bit out of place, many of the other young women stood in groups with friends, or were paired off with other eligible bachelors for a dance. Just when you were thinking of finding a powder room to hide in, a warm hand settled on the small of your back, and you were swept into a man’s arms. Your heart skipped a beat at the sound of his low voice in your ear.

“May I have this dance?”

A smile spread on your lips as you turned to face him, his other hand taking yours as he pulled you close. 

“James,” you whispered. “You came.”

“Of course my darling, I wouldn’t miss an opportunity to see you.” His blue eyes danced behind his mask, eyes you would recognize anywhere. They seemed to gaze into your soul, as if it was wide open and he could see all your secrets and desires. You smiled, feeling heat creep up to your cheeks, biting your lip, your heart fluttering when he raised your hand to his lips and pressed a gentle kiss against your knuckles. 

James led you around the dance floor, twirling you around and dipping you low. A smirk spread on his lips and you knew he longed to kiss you, before pulling you up again, making you giggle. The masquerade dances were your favorite, everyone wore their very best, masks fancy and beautifully decorated, and for an evening it was nice to sink into anonymity, where social classes and family lineages didn’t mean a thing.

It was easy to forget for an evening that you and James weren’t supposed to be together.

From the moment you’d first seen him, you were smitten. If his gorgeous eyes weren’t enough to win you over, his smile was one of the most beautiful you’d ever seen. He made your heart flutter, made you melt the first time he looked at you. He’d kissed your hand and asked your name, and for a moment you couldn’t even remember. Over time you’d grown close, and knew you couldn’t imagine life without him. Your heart couldn’t bear the thought. And yet, the Barnes family was prestigious, you knew James’s father wanted his sons to marry strategically, and your family didn’t make the cut.

James, however, didn’t seem to care. He’d told you one night, in a hushed whisper, that it was you who held his heart, and he would keep fighting to be with you until his last breath. You cried that night when he had to leave. James held a piece of your heart as well, there were no other men for you. He was the only one.

He held you close for the rest of the night, your hand on his shoulder, head leaning against his chest. For a few moments the rest of the room faded away, and you lost yourself in his warmth, his scent. Lost in him was your favorite place to be. 

At the end of the night you snuck away with him, eventually ending up in his bed once again. Here there were no prying eyes, no judgement, no rules. Here you and James could be together, unabashedly, truly sharing your love and passion. His name fell from your lips as he took you apart, showing you love the way no other man had, the way no other man could. And you gave yourself to him, fully and completely. You were his and he was yours.

As you lay wrapped in his arms afterwards, skin flushed and warm, a delightful bliss spreading through your body, he hummed, stroking your hair and kissing the top of your head. He seemed to curl even more around you and you giggled, reaching up to kiss along his stubbled jaw.

“What is it, my love?” He was quiet for a moment, quieter than usual, as if thoughts clouded his mind. Just as you were about to shift in his arms and pry further, he spoke, a warm hand rubbing over your back.

“Never have I felt a stronger love for someone than I feel for you. You are my sun and my moon, my flowers in the spring and my snowflakes in the winter. I can’t imagine my life without you.” James pulled away slightly, tilting your chin up so he could gaze into your eyes once more. “I can’t wait any longer and have to ask you, will you do me the honor of being my wife?”

For a moment you couldn’t speak, words escaped you as a million thoughts and feelings ran through you at once. Your eyes grew wide and you simply stared at him until everything caught up and you gasped, a wide grin spreading on your face as you squealed.

“James! Yes! Yes, of course!” He grinned back, kissing you hard, a carefree, sloppy kiss, and you wiggled in his arms, squirming even closer and wrapping your arms around his neck. “Oh my gosh. Are you… you really want me to be your wife?”

“Of course,” his voice softened and he trailed his fingers over your cheek and along your jaw, running his thumb over your lips before gently kissing them. “I would love nothing more.”

“But your father -”

“I don’t care what my father says.” His eyes sparkled dangerously, and the smirk on his lips made you giggle. He kissed you again, rolling you over and kissing you deeply before pulling back to gaze down into your eyes again. You reached up to trail your fingers over his cheek now, brushing his hair out of his face and tucking the soft locks behind his ear.

“You know he won’t leave it alone once he finds out. He’ll do everything he can to stop it.”

“Let him try,” James replied softly, leaning into your palm and turning to press his lips against it. “But don’t you worry my love, I won’t let anything happen to you, and I promise you, we’ll have our happily ever after.” Again, he was melting your heart. You smiled, blinking back tears of happiness as you whispered more words of love, and he leaned down to show you again just how much he loved you.

A/N: Hello! It’s late but I have a Tom Hiddleston Regency fic - ala @the-th-horniest-book-club​ and their Theme Day!

You gazed around the ballroom, looking for your best friend. She had promised you she would attend this evening and look appropriately drab in comparison to you so you could FINALLY dance with him.

A hand laid on your forearm and you gasped at the contact. A pair of green eyes surveyed you, a hint of mischief lurking beneath his calm demeanor. “Miss y/ln, might I have the next dance?”

You gulped but nodded, indicating the dance card dangling from your wrist. His hand moved from your forearm to cradle your wrist gently as he marked off the dance spot. You were too flustered to notice your best friend, Nicolette, standing to your left. The gentleman nodded at you, bowing his head low. You could feel his breath on your hand before he slid away. 

Nicolette sighed as she glanced at your dance card. “You did it! You little flirt, how did you get his attention? Oh my gosh!” A few heads turned to frown at the two of you. You ushered Nicolette away from prying ears.

“I didn’t do anything! He was just there and… what?” Your sharp gaze turned wary. “Oh my gosh what Nicolette?”

She hissed as quietly as she could. “Look at your dance card!”

You turned your wrist and gasped. Before you could even come up with a reason why he promptly stepped in front of you again and bowed once more. “I believe I have this dance?” he teased as the corners of his lips turned up. You could only nod as he swept you into his arms and into the lovely waltz the string quartet played. The room spun about you as the two of you danced.

Nicolette felt a nudge at her hip; your mother grinned as she watched you and the Marquess of Avon. “A fair match I dare say. Nicolette, my dear, don’t you feel your turn is next?” Your mother spied a man from across the room and Nicolette’s face grew warm.

“Duchess, my family could never fetch as good match for me,” she murmured as the song ended. She watched as you bit your lower lip, guiding your suitor to the edge of the dance floor. She saw the want clear in your eyes as you tried to stumble through an introduction.

“Mother, this is… Tom… I mean, the man… oh!” You giggled and tried again. “Tom this is my mother the Duchess of …” You glanced to your mother and giggled again. “Oh I am awful at this!”

He raised his hand, still ensconced in yours, to brush the tenderest kiss across your knuckles. Your knees buckled slightly and his lip turned into a devilish smile. He turned to your mother and grew serious. “Marquess of Avon, my lady. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you. Your daughter is absolutely bewitching; may I call upon her tomorrow?” You pressed your lips together tightly to keep from squealing in glee. The coup of the season! You could already hear the faintest bit of murmuring running through the ballroom.

“We’d be delighted to have you! Is four o’clock a good hour? We usually take tea then; I promise our cook can have whatever you wish.”

“That’s very kind of you.” He squeezed your hand as another dance started. “Darling, may I have the next dance?”

Nicolette rolled her eyes at you as you giggled again. “I must say yes, as you have asked for all of my dances,” you teased. Tom, the Marquess of Avon, tugged you towards the dance floor once more; the two of you floated on air, willfully oblivious to the people around you. Nicolette sighed, knowing how quickly you were falling in love with your suitor.

Your mother watched the two young women with a small smile. Don’t worry, my girl! I know the perfect man for you is out there!

The HBC’s had a regency theme day that was technically yesterday… but I just didn’t have the energy to do anything after work yesterday.

I’m in some pain today, but I feel like 70% better than I did yesterday.

I was going to write something, but I’m just not in the mood. So instead, you guys get a mood board and premise.

This one is for @the-ce-horniest-book-club

Lord Chris Evans is the eldest son of an Earl and will inherit the title and all of the lands owned by his family, which is why it is important he marries the right woman. Except that his idea of the right woman doesn’t mesh with that of his parents or his grandmother.

A chance encounter at a masquerade ball makes him sets him on a path of no return. Only question is, will his family come around and accept his bride of choice or will he walk away from them all for love and leave his younger brother with the burden of being Earl.

The consequences of a war have long been established, but the reasons the war starts in the first place interests us the most. Here are ten stupid reasons, combined with the egos of those in charge that resulted in some of the bloodiest wars ever fought.

#1 The Great Guano War The war of the Pacific or the Great Guano War was fought between Peru, Bolivia and Chile from 1879-1883. Guano is Spanish for bird droppings, so the great Guano War roughly translates into the great war for bird poo. Thanks to its high level of phosphorus and nitrogen, guano was an effective ingredient in the manufacturing of fertilizers and gun powder. Needless to say guano was worth its weight in gold. The main deposit of guano was on the coastal side of Atacama Desert. The three hundred and fifty mile nitrate enriched desert coast line was mostly under the control of Peru and Bolivia. Bolivia lacked the resources and the man power to exploit this deposit, so they contracted it out to Chilean companies. Over the years there were many disputes as Bolivia tried to press for larger revenue. This led to a secret agreement between Peru and Bolivia; the Peruvian government had planned to secure the control of the output by state purchase and operation of nitrate properties. Such alliance required Bolivia freeing its hands off Chilean miners, so in 1879 Bolivia increased the taxes on minerals. Chile, trying to protect the interest of its mining companies, took control of the mining region, prompting Peru and Bolivia to declare war. Who won? Chile won the war thanks to its superior navy. The victory resulted in Chile taking control of the entire desert coast line in dispute. The loss left a deep scar in the Bolivian and Peruvian society; even to this day it remains an emotional issue which was evident during Bolivia’s Natural gas riot of 2004. Caualties: 13000+

#2 The War of Dahis and Ghabra The war of Dahis and Ghabra ,which lasted for 40 years, was fought between two Arabian tribes (Abs and Dhubiyan) over a disputed horse race, in which the former accused the later of cheating. It began when the leader of Abs challenged his counterpart at Dhubhiyan to a race. Abs had a horse called Dahis (a breed famous for its speed) which they pitched against the Dhubhiyans horse, Ghabra. The race was to be one hundred bow shots in length, and the wager of hundred camels was agreed. During the race Ghabra took the lead but Dahis overtook and was about to win the race when Dhubyanites ambushed the leading horse and drove him off course. Hearing about the foul play, Abs proclaimed victory but the later refused to pay. Resenting the treachery, the Abs slew the brother of Dhubiyans leader. The Dhubiyans did the same to the Abs’s leader brother. The horseman declared the war which lasted for forty years. Who won? Although Dhubiyans held their own, neither could take a decisive advantage, and the war dragged on for years. Casualties: Unknown

#3 The Pastry War France went to war with Mexico in the year 1838. The war began with the naval blockade of some Mexican port and capture of a fortress in Veracruz. It ended in 1839 with the British brokering the peace. Pastry War, as it’s charmingly called, started when a French pastry cook claimed that during a civil disturbance 1828, his bakery was vandalized by some Mexican army officials. The chef demanded payment for the losses from the Mexican authority but got none. Finally ten years later the chef pleaded to the King Louis Philippe of France to come to its citizen’s aid. Mexico had previously defaulted millions of dollars in loan from France. Louis, taking this as the last straw, ordered Mexico to pay 600,000 pesos towards damages caused to its citizens. The amount was extremely high, as an average Mexican workman’s daily wages was 1 peso. Mexico refused to pay, giving France the excuse to deploy its navy. Who won? The skirmish lasted for a year before British intervened and made Mexico pay 600,000 pesos. Casualties: 300+

#4 French Invasion of Algeria Algeria was under French rule from 1830 to 1960, prior to that it was a part of Ottoman Regency. The relations between France and the regency during that time were on the edge. Dey Hussein (Ottoman provincial ruler to Algiers) demanded an answer over the outstanding debt from the French Consul. Unsatisfied with the answer, the irritated ruler allegedly hit the consul with his hand held fan. This incident was taken quite seriously by Charles X of France, who took this as an opportunity to increase his popularity among his disgruntled population. Charles X ordered a blockade of Algerian ports. The blockade lasted for three years until a ship carrying a French ambassador to Dey for a proposed negotiation was bombarded.  France took this as a declaration of war and ordered a full scale invasion. Who won? Although there was resistance over the years, the French took full control of Algeria by 1834. Casualty: Unknown

#5 301 Year War for Shaving a Beard The bearded King Louis VII of France married Eleanor Duchess of Aquitaine in 1137 and received two massive provinces in France as dowry. Later on, he went for the Crusades and upon his return, he presented himself to his queen clean shaven. Eleanor didn’t like his ugly clean shaven look and demanded that Louis grow his whiskers back. Louis furiously refused and the bitter resentment that followed resulted in divorce. Eleanor went to England where she married King Henry II. After her marriage, she demanded the return of her dowry land back. Again, Louis refused which resulted in King Henry declaring war on France that lasted for over 300 years. Who won? The war lasted for 301 year from 1152–1453, France won the long and arduous war but at very high economical and collateral losses. Casualties: Unknown

#6 Al Basoos War Al Basoos War is another Arab tribal war which lasted for over 40 years (from 494-534). Named after an old woman, the war was fought between Thaglib and Bakr tribes. It started when a she-camel belonging to the neighbor of Al Basoos, wandered and mingled with the flock belonging to Kulyab (chief of Thaglib tribe). Unable to recognize the camel, Kulyab killed it. When Al Basoos’s nephew, who was the leader of Bakr tribe, learned of this development he sought vengeance and killed Kulyab. This resulted in another tribal war. Who won? There wasn’t any clear winner as the war dragged for ages until it was finally forgotten about. Casualties: Unknown

#7 The Cod Wars The Cod War is a jocular term given to a confrontation between Iceland and Britain over the issue of fishing rights. It started in 1958 when Iceland took it upon itself to increase its fishing boundaries from 4 miles to 12 miles, and then in 1972 when it further increased its boundaries to 50 miles. Iceland wanted exclusive fishing rights since that was its only source of income. Both the countries came to an agreement where Iceland would allow certain fishing zones for British trawlers to fish in and also imposed a limit on the amount that could be caught by the British trawlers. The agreement was valid for 2 years and expired in November of 1975, soon after which the Third Cod War started. Iceland further increased its fishing boundaries from 50 to 200 miles and overall banned British trawlers in its water. The British deployed over 20 frigates to protect the interest of its fisherman. Who won? You could say Iceland. Britain and the other fishing countries agreed to the Icelandic demands after NATO and US intervened. Iceland had previously threatened NATO of shutting down their base in Keflavik (a strategically important base to NATO during the Cold War) if their demands weren’t met. Casualties: None

#8 Honey War The Honey War was a 1830’s territorial dispute between Iowa and Missouri. The 9.5 mile long strip running across the border was the source of the dispute caused due by unclear wording in the Missouri Constitution on boundaries. The Governors of both states ordered their respective militia to patrol their side of the border, after a Missourian sheriff was incarcerated trying to collect taxes in the disputed zone. There was other incident where three trees containing valuable honey were cut down, hence the name Honey War. Who won? The situation was on edge until Supreme Court intervened and declared the issue in Iowa’s favor. Casualties: None

#9 The War of the Golden Stool During the late 19th and early 20th century the British bullied its way into Africa. Thanks to the obvious superiority of guns over spears and bows, the British quickly quelled any form of resistance.  One of them was from a kingdom named Ashanti (modern day Ghana). After initial skirmishes British forces finally exiled the Ashanti king, Premeph I. Further more, the governor, Sir Frederick Mitchell Hodgson, in 1900 demanded to sit on a golden stool during an assembly.  This insult didn’t go down well with the people of Ashanti as the golden stool is the throne to the Ashanti king and also a sacred symbol to its people. In order to protect its heritage, Yaa Asantewaa rallied the troops and declared war on the British Who won? Although the British finally conquered the Ashanti’s, it was the later who won the war as they fought for the golden stool, and succeeded. The British never recovered the stool. Casualties: 3000+

#10 The Pemmican War The Pemmican War was a serious armed confrontation between two British fur-trading companies operating in Canada: Hudson’s Bay Company and The North West Company. The problem started in 1811, when Earl of Selkrik, Thomas Douglas, started the colonization project known as Red River Colony on a 120000 sq miles of land provided by the HBC. Thomas wanted to monopolize the fur trading business to HBC, hence he banned all the Métis (Europeans who got married to the natives) from trading with NWC. And in 1814 the Governor of the Red River colony issued a proclamation intended to limit the number of buffaloes killed by the Métis. This enraged the Métis who disregarded the proclamation and started converting the buffalo’s meat to pemmican. The governor issued ban on pemmican export and seized four hundred bags of pemmican belonging to NWC. He also ordered the company to end its trading post in the Red River. NWC, along with Métis, declared war on HBC and Red River, looting, pillaging and burning down post forts belonging to the HBC. The commercial struggle of both of the companies turned into guerrilla war fare when HBC retaliated with militia of its own. Who won? None. The Crown, disgraced by the two company’s action, forced both the companies to merge under one name. Casualties: 21 people including the Governor who was killed in the Battle of Seven Oaks

Playing Games

A/N: You might have seen this coming from my last post, but I just couldn’t help it! One more theme day post for Regency Day over at the HBC - this one is for @the-ss-horniest-book-club​ with Bucky x Plus Sized!OC Nicolette

Nicolette sighed as she watched all of the couples on the dance floor; for the millionth time her hand reached out towards the platter of candied sweets while a memory of her nasty older sister poking fun at her last dress fitting forced her hand back to her side.

“These are so good!” a muffled voice groaned in delight. Nicolette looked over to see James stuffing his mouth with several of the sweets. She pressed her lips together to hold in a giggle. James beamed at her, happy to bring a smile to her face. He held out one sweet to her. “Want one?” Nicolette shook her head gently; he shrugged with a grin and tossed it into his waiting mouth.

James had grown into a quite a handsome man, something Nicolette had been loathe to admit to her best friend y/n. After all, he was her brother and had been almost as close a friend as y/n. As with any sibling he had teased her when they were younger, but that had never stopped Nicolette from picturing a future with him as her intended. Her family’s fall from fortune had forever shattered those illusions. Now she knew she had to settle with someone who matched her station. She shuddered for a moment, picturing Esquire Freeman as her husband. James watched Nicolette closely. “Are you alright?”

Nicolette pulled back from her nightmare and gave James a smile. “Nothing a good game can’t fix, Bucky.” James pinked at the use of his childhood nickname, running his tongue over his top front teeth as proof of his physical changes.

“Game? What kind of game are you suggesting?” came another male voice. James’s eldest brother Steven flanked Nicolette on her other side. “Are you planning more mischief?”

Nicolette scoffed as she turned her attentions away from the two attractive men. “I gave up mischief some time ago. I can imagine that you have enough planned for the entire room though.” James and Steven grinned at each other over Nicolette’s head.

The music stopped long enough for James to take Nicolette’s right hand. “May I have your next dance?” Nicolette extended her hand out, offering the dance card.

“You should have no trouble finding an open slot.” Nicolette grimaced at the sharp tone of her own voice. 

James finished his signature with a flourish, then led the young lady out to the ballroom floor as a waltz began. “Pricks, the lot of them! Forget them all; you still have me, right?”

Nicolette gazed into James’s eyes, wishing that her father hadn’t gambled nearly everything away, that James could really be the match she had always secretly wanted. Her gaze drifted momentarily into the crowd and spotted James’s mother smiling in their direction.  She couldn’t, Nicolette swore to herself. She wouldn’t, would she?!

Before Nicolette could warn James, his mother tapped him on the shoulder. “James, my dear, we are hosting the Marquess of Avon tomorrow. Be my favorite boy and promise to escort our Nicolette here? I think your sister could use the familiar face.”

James nodded to his mother, not daring to contradict his mother’s wishes. “I would be delighted. Nicolette, Mother appears to be playing at matchmaking again. Thankfully her target is y/n, and not myself. Will you be so kind as to save us both and attend?”

Nicolette agreed easily; both missed the scheming glint in the Duchess’s eyes. Don’t worry my son, I’ll be getting the two of you paired next!
