[Third person POV]
Jefferson ran as quickly as his feet could carry him with Emma not too far behind him.  Grace had gone home, knowing that this situation could potentially be dangerous. Desperation, fear, anger, and hope battled each other in Jefferson’s heart as he ran.  His beloved and precious Rapunzel could possibly be alive, but there was a heavy chance that Jefferson got his hopes up for nothing.
Jefferson rushed through the front door, silently shutting it behind him as Emma snuck in through the back entrance so Gold wouldn't have any escape routes.  Gold was standing at his desk in the back room of the shop, working on what looked like some magic elixir.
Emma drew her gun and slowly approached the doorway to the room he was in while Jefferson snuck up to the curtain that acted as a wall in between the back room and the main counter.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you, dearie," Mr. Gold warned the gun-wielding sheriff.  Emma was a little bit startled.  He knew they were coming.  She cautiously stepped into the back room, giving Jefferson a look that whispered ‘be careful'.
"You can come out now Jefferson," Gold was surprisingly calm and confident, considering Emma, the person with a functioning handgun, was absolutely furious with him.  "She's not here, Jefferson," Gold said matter-of-factly.
A bubble of rage surfaced within Jefferson's chest, but he kept his cool.  Even though Jefferson was panicking internally, a brilliant idea popped into Jefferson's head. "But you know where she is…" he sang calmly pacing around the room and studying the many antiques as if he was at an art gallery, "and I would appreciate it if you'd let me in on your secret,".  Jefferson was acting crazy!  Well… he was the Mad Hatter after all.
A light, sarcastic chuckle erupted from Mr. Gold, "oh, I'm sure you would," he laughed, "but I'm not going to tell you anything,".
Jefferson looked over Mr. Gold's shoulder at the spell book he was reading, nodding in approval.  "I see… well, that's a shame because you give me no choice but to-" Jefferson took the bowl full of the potion and splashed it into Mr. Gold's face.
A cringe-worthy sizzling noise echoed in Jefferson and Emma's ears as the strange liquid made contact with Mr. Gold's flesh. A scream of pain left the old man’s lungs as he used his powers to hurl Jefferson into the bookshelf that was located directly behind him.
Emma took action and aimed her gun at Gold, but Gold acted quickly, using his powers to knock the gun across the floor and slam Emma down onto the desk, breaking it in half.  Jefferson lunged towards Gold, knocking him to the floor.  Before Jefferson could do anything else, Gold grabbed his cane and jabbed Jefferson in the stomach, making him fall to his knees in pain.
A large cut formed on Emma's forehead along with many bruises.  She rushed over Gold who was back on his feet, but Gold dodged her and kicked her through the curtain.  A loud clanging thud sounded from where Emma landed.  She had crashed into the glass display case and knocked a few things over.
Jefferson swiped Mr. Gold’s feet from under him, causing Gold to fall flat on his face.  Emma rushed back in and grabbed the lapels of Gold’s suit jacket, slamming him against the wall.  She violently pinned him up against the wall.  Emma landed one solid punch to Mr. Gold's jaw and he was out cold.
The sheriff helped Jefferson get up off the floor and onto his feet, "I'll get the whole department over here to see if there's any sign of your wife or where she is," Emma smiled, "I promise, Jefferson, we'll find out what happened to her,".
Weeks had passed and all that the police could find were stolen items, broken pieces of furniture, and random pieces of so-called ‘evidence' that lead to nothing but dead ends.  Gold was currently being held in custody until he spilled the information needed to find Jefferson's wife.  Jefferson had been called many times about his wife and where they thought she was based on the ‘evidence' found in Mr. Gold's shop.  But, after so many urgent phone calls and so many false alarms, Jefferson lost all hope that he would once again be reunited with Rapunzel.
Grace, on the other hand, was still determined to find the mother she never knew.  She always told her father to answer the urgent phone calls and encouraged him to attend the many fruitless searches the police went on.
Grace was working on her math homework one night when the phone started ringing.  It rang loudly for a good thirty seconds, but Jefferson didn't answer.  A few minutes later, the same number called once again, Jefferson still didn't answer.  After the number called a third time, and since her father was refusing to answer the phone, Grace decided she would answer it herself.  The call must've been important if they called that many times. "Hello?" Grace greeted, holding the phone up to her ear.
Grace burst into her father's room without knocking. Jefferson was just sitting at his desk, with his face held in his hands, and his back turned towards the door. "Papa!  Papa!" Grace yelped urgently, jumping up and down while flailing her arms in front of her father.  "What is it, Grace?" Jefferson groaned sitting up straight, "Papa!  That was Sheriff Swan!  She says they've found mother!".  Jefferson was caught very off guard by this.  They found her?  “Where?!” he asked. “they found her at the Mental Institute!  She’s being taken care of at the Sheriff’s office right now!”.
Jefferson and Grace navigated the hallways of the sheriff's department, holding each other's hands tightly.  This was either a horrible joke or the moment they had been hoping for.  Jefferson felt like he could cry.  He was so hopeful but fearful at the same time.  What if it was just another false alarm?  What if this was just another huge let down?
As They stood outside of Emma's office, Jefferson knelt down in front of Grace, holding onto her shoulders to keep her attention, "Grace, I'm going to go in there and make sure this is the real deal, okay?".  Grace nodded.  "You stay out here until either I or Miss Swan comes out to get you,". Jefferson kissed his daughter on the forehead before entering the big office.
He closed the door and turned around to take in the sight before him.  A beautiful woman with a long red braid and amber colored eyes was talking to Emma. She had a bright smile and a lighthearted laugh, just like Rapunzel had all those years ago.  The woman slowly turned her head to look at Jefferson. Realization lit up her eyes as if she recognized him.  She looked simply awestruck.
"Jefferson?" she whispered, stepping closer.
Excitement and relief overwhelmed Jefferson, "b-bunny?" he sobbed, taking stepping closer to her.  The woman reached out her hand to cup Jefferson's cheek, "it's you… it's really you this time!" he cried, pulling her in for a tight and loving embrace.
Jefferson was quietly sobbing tears of relief as he held Rapunzel close for the first time in years.  Rapunzel pulled him in for a sweet and gentle, yet intense and passionate kiss.  All her pain and joy and fear was poured out into that kiss.  Jefferson pulled away, looking into Rapunzel's tear-filled eyes, "I missed you so much…" he squeaked, smiling through his tears.
The creaking of the door prompted Jefferson and Rapunzel to turn their heads to where the noise was coming from.  Grace was sheepishly entering the office to see what was going on.
Rapunzel looked at Grace, then back at Jefferson. “I-is that…?” Rapunzel stuttered.  Jefferson nodded.
A cheerful smile crept onto Grace’s face, "mother?  Mother!" she cried, lunging herself into the open arms of Rapunzel.  Rapunzel was crying tears of joy as she embraced her daughter for the first time after years of being a prisoner to Rumpelstiltskin.
Jefferson looked at his wife and kissed her once again. He gazed into her eyes, attempting to memorize her face again.  Finally, after years and years, he got to embrace his whole family again.  He kissed Rapunzel’s cheek and whispered, "I'm half crazy for you,".
Rapunzel gazed into his shimmering blue eyes, then glanced down at her daughter, whom she was still embracing tightly.  She was holding them close after decades of separation.  Rapunzel took a deep breath and smiled back before responding, "well I'm full crazy for you,".

Here’s some fanart literally no one asked for!!!
Remember that totally unimpressive series I wrote called “Half Crazy for you”?  Well here are some images I’ve drawn over the last 10 months to go along with it!
NOTE: All of these works were drawn by me, this is ALL MY ART.  So... yeah... sorry you had to see this...
Tumblr media
This is the first drawing of Rapunzel I ever made and I was really proud of it at the time... at the time.  It’s just the general look of Rapunzel, nothing much to it.
Tumblr media
This was an image really just designed for someone to see Jefferson and Rapunzel together.... that’s basically it.
Tumblr media
This work goes with the last chapter “United Again, Divided No More”.  The arms are a little wonky and I’m 80% sure I traced the body position (just the body position!  NOT THE WHOLE THING) but... yeah...
Tumblr media
It’s fairly obvious which chapter this goes with... yep...
Tumblr media
I’m actually still pretty satisfied with this one, I really like the style I referenced and how it fits in with the feel of the piece.
Tumblr media
And this is my most recent drawing of Rapunzel and I’m pretty okay with this one.  The proportions are a little off and her face doesn’t look how I’d prefer it to, but I think it looks decent.  (There’s even a little Asylum Rose in this one! :3)
So... yeah... that’s my mediocre fanart for my own fanfic that literally no one asked for.... hopefully you aren’t scarred for life because of my poor artistic skills.  Thanks for taking the time to look at my art though!  It’s really appreciated!  There was another picture I made for “Priscilla Towers”, but I forgot to take a picture of it and I’m too lazy to do it now... maybe if someone really wanted to see it I will post it, but until then...  Thanks!
And here I am the next day adding, not one, but two drawing I forgot!  I realized I had forgotten to put in a piece that I was actually proud of and decided that if I was going to put in the good art, I might as well put the one I’m less than proud of in as well.
Tumblr media
This is the one I am proud of.  I just like how it turned out.  I did use a lot of references (there is no tracing in this piece), only the coloring, clothes, the faces, and some moderation to the bodies are purely my work.  But still, it was good practice.
Tumblr media
And here is the one I’m not so proud of.  It’s supposed to be the view of Priscilla in the insane asylum through the little window in the door.  The window looks fine, it’s pretty aesthetically pleasing, but Priscilla.... yeah... not so good...
Welp, that’s it until I decide to be pathetic again and make more art for Half Crazy for You.  Thanks!

PART 12

[Jefferson's POV]
Three wonderful days had passed since our beautiful Grace was born.  Rapunzel and I decided to stay in Wonderland for a few days, to let her recover from labor. But, neither of us really minded, we had our new baby girl to keep us company.  Everything was absolutely wonderful… until I realized something.
"How are we going to get home to the Enchanted forest?!" I turned to Rapunzel in a panic, "the same number of people who go into the hat have to come out of the hat; no more, no less.  How are we going to get back home with Grace?!". Magic may be powerful, but it still had its rules and limits.  Slowly, Rapunzel turned her head to look down at Grace who was peacefully napping in her arms.  She looked so heartbroken as she gazed at Grace’s soft little face.  Someone was going to have to stay behind, and I wasn't about to leave one of my girls here.
"I'll stay behind," I stated firmly.  Rapunzel looked at me as if I was crazy, "Jefferson, have you gone mad?!  I'm not leaving you behind!" she yelled in response, "but only two people can go back!  I'm not about to leave you or our newborn daughter alone here in Wonderland!".  Rapunzel looked as if she was about to cry, and I hated seeing her cry.  "Jefferson, I'm not going to let our daughter be raised without her father!" "and being raised without her mother is somehow better?!".  As soon as I said that, I could see that Rapunzel's heart broke in half.  I didn’t think what I said was that… upsetting.  But, I hurt her, whether or not I meant to, I hurt her.
I didn’t get to apologize for my hurtful words, because a group of the queen's guards were now rushing towards us! Where the hell did they come from?!  The palace isn’t anywhere near here!  That didn’t matter, we needed to get out of here.
My heart began to pound wildly in my chest as a million worst case scenarios ran through my head, ‘Grace could be killed, Rapunzel could get hurt, I could get captured, we could be trapped here forever, or worse, we could be separated’. Shaking my head out of my thoughts, I turned to face Rapunzel, RUN!" I screamed taking her hand and running as fast as I could.
Rapunzel struggled to keep up and kept stumbling over things, but she made sure that she didn't drop Grace.  The ear-piercing sound of Grace's frightened cries hit my ears making tears prick at the corners of my eyes.  She was scared.  I quickly wiped the tears away, not wanting to get distracted by paternal instincts as I tried to run faster.
As soon as I picked up my pace, Rapunzel tripped falling to the ground.  Luckily, she twisted mid-fall and landed on her back so Grace would be unharmed.  I quickly brought Rapunzel up to her feet, taking Grace into my arms.  As soon as she stood up straight, ready to run again, the sound of whipping wind caught my attention.  Before she could turn around, Rapunzel was impaled by one of the guard's javelin-like spears.
Time seemed to slow down.  It was like the Earth was slowing down just so it could prolong this one moment and torture me.  Rapunzel stood frozen in her spot, a nauseous look waving on her face.  Blood was slowly seeping through her corset, creating a ring of red on her blouse, further reminding me of what had just happened. With an echoing thud, Rapunzel fell to her knees, swaying slightly before falling onto her side, causing a cloud of dust to flit through the air and settle again.
Tears were threatening to spill from eyes as I knelt by my dying wife.  She reached out to touch Grace’s head, but she could only muster enough energy to gently graze her fingertips across her daughter’s cheek.   I could see blood started to flow from the corner of her mouth and cascade onto the dirt.  My gaze flickered from Rapunzel to Grace repeatedly as I held my baby girl close to my heart.
Tears were flowing freely down my cheeks, like a waterfall fueled by my fear and grief.  "Looks like we won't have to worry about who gets to go home…" Rapunzel chuckled, coughing up more blood before smiling weakly.  I opened my mouth to speak, but all I could muster was a pained sob.
I looked at the tiara she wore every day since I gave it to her.  She was so happy when I gave it to her a year ago.  Back then, we would have never thought we’d be here, with a child… a soon-to-be motherless child.  That blood-smeared crown only reminded me about how I was about to lose my princess forever.
"I love you so much, bunny… I-I'm not ready to let you go…" I sobbed, holding Rapunzel's hand tightly.  Her grip was weakening by the second, meaning her death was mere minutes away.  But Rapunzel kept smiling up at me and Grace, despite the shadow of the Grim Reaper looming over her.
Rapunzel lifted her hand up to cup my cheek with what little energy she had left.  She used her last spark of energy to comfort me.
"I love you too, Jefferson and I always will…" she rasped, her lungs filling with blood, making it hard for her to breathe or speak, “same goes for you, my precious little Grace,”.  Just as she finished her sentence, she let out her last breath.
A cloud of dark smoke came from her wound and swirled around her, making her disappear as it dissipated.  The spear must've been cured or enchanted.  Now there wasn't even a body to bury!  Grace and I wouldn’t even have a headstone to visit!
My sobs became grunts of anger as my breathing went from ragged and uneven, to harsh and fiery.  Grace once again started to cry, making everything seem so much more gray and depressing.  I wiped away my angry, fearful tears away with my sleeve as I groaned out, "I hate Wonderland…"

HALF CRAZY FOR YOU (Part three- My princess)
Series Summary: Jefferson had lost his wife years ago.  But, when some mysterious evidence of her survival appears, he must find her.
A/N: This chapter is slightly better written than the other two, so, it’s less sucky this round :)
Jefferson x Rapunzel (OC)
Word count: 746
Summary: Jefferson shows Rapunzel what he stole from the Queen of Hearts.
Warnings: implied smut
PART 2
(GIF not mine)
Tumblr media
[Jefferson's POV]
I reached into my satchel and pulled out the extravagant jewel tiara that I had stolen from the Queen of Hearts earlier.  I got down on one knee and bowed my head holding up the expensive piece of jewelry, "for my princess" I smiled, gently placing the crown on top of Rapunzel's head.  With a goofy grin that I was sure was on my face, I grabbed my wife's hand and nearly dragged her to the study and plopped her in front of the full-length mirror. "You look beautiful," I complimented, placing my chin to rest on her shoulder.  She gently stroked my cheek while we sat in a comfortable silence. I stared at her through the mirror admiring how the three jewels of varying shades of violet on her head really made her amber eyes pop.
Seeing her in the expensive piece of jewelry reminded me of all the shenanigans we got ourselves into when we were younger.  All the fake identities, the stolen goods, bad deals, and God knows what else.
Once I finally left my thoughts, I remembered the deep cut that was on Rapunzel’s right foot.  To both keep pressure off her wounded foot and to be the zany man I am, I picked her up bridal style and spun around, eliciting a squeal of joy from her.  She clung tightly to my coat, her nails digging into the dark fabric.  "I love you, bunny," I whispered kissing her neck a few times, "I love you too," Rapunzel giggled gently pulling away from me.  She lovingly gazed into my eyes as she wrapped her arms loosely around my neck.
She stares at me with those big brown eyes. Those eyes are what caused me to fall in love with her in the first place.  I’m a sucker for those beautiful eyes.  "I'm half crazy for you," Rapunzel swooned, playing the hem of my scarf, "well I'm full crazy for you," I retorted playfully before swooping in for a loving kiss on the lips.
As we lay in bed that night, I watch the steady rise and fall of Rapunzel's chest. A peaceful, relaxed aura surrounded her, almost like a veil.  I gently cupped the side of her face gently stroking her cheek with my thumb causing her to stir a bit and lean into my touch.  She crawled closer to me then turned around so her back was pressed against my chest.  A sly smirk made its way onto my lips as started pressing feather light kisses down the back of her neck.  Rapunzel squirmed and giggled, her laughter only spurred me on.  I wrapped my arms around her waist, holding her impossibly close while kissing her cheek and temple.  "Jefferson!" She squealed turning around in my arms so she was facing me once again.  I loved the way the moonlight illuminated her features.  The soft, white-ish blue light making her eyes glitter and her smile sparkle. I pulled her even closer as I kissed her full on; hot, sweet and passionate.  She reciprocated and kissed back just as fervently while she held on to either side of my face.
It almost felt like I was flying.  No matter how many times Rapunzel has kissed me, I always get this feeling in my chest.  It’s almost like a swarm of butterflies soaring around in my body, making my heart skip and jump.  Or maybe it was like stars and lightning bursting in your rib cage.  Whatever it was, it felt wonderful.
All too soon, I had to pull away for air; she always managed to rip the air from my lungs.  "I love you," I whispered against her lips, "I love you more," she replied matter-of-factly. She was always so competitive, and playfully so. "I beg to differ," I stated smugly as I pushed her onto her back and hovered over her.  The expression of her face made my knees weak.  Her plump lips were slightly parted, her eyes were wide and trusting, and the increased speed of her breathing nearly made my soul leave my body.  With her hands still holding my face, she pulled me down for another urgent, passionate kiss, and the feeling returned. I could only imagine how this felt for her.  Were galaxies exploding in her skin?  Was electricity surging through her blood?  Was her brain imploding at the overwhelming sensation like mine was?  It all felt so good.  Tonight was going to be a long night.

HALF CRAZY FOR YOU (Part one- Mad Love)
Series Summary: Jefferson had lost his wife years ago.  But, when some mysterious evidence of her survival appears, he must find her.
A/N: I wrote this a while ago so it might suck, and I’m only editing a little bit, so that might also add to the suck.
Jefferson x Rapunzel (OC)
Word count: 972
Summary: A simple introduction to Jefferson and Rapunzel.
Warnings: minor wounds
(GIF not mine)
Tumblr media
Love is a strange force.  It can be cold and bitter- warm and welcoming- hot and passionate. It can be between brothers, friends, spouses, parents and their children.  Sometimes it's quiet and shy, other times it's loud and booming.
This story is about mad love.  It's unexpected, uncontrollable, and unwavering. It can be any kind of love. Sweet, bitter, welcoming, stationary, loud, shy, anything.  This type of love is a perfect fit for the Mad Hatter of Wonderland.  It's the perfect love for him to show his spouse; Rapunzel.  In fact, our story is about the mad love between them.
Our story of mad love begins in the underground dungeon of the Queen of Hearts' palace…
 [Rapunzel's POV]
Stuck, trapped, compromised.  That sums up my situation right now.  Not to mention I have a four-inch gash on my back that's bleeding profusely.  And on top of all that, my husband is probably waiting for me outside of the palace instead of looking for me down here.  Welp, needless to say, this is the last time I steal from the Queen. Especially without knowing what I'm thieving!  Jefferson absolutely refused to tell me!  It's a wonder we're both still alive.
I slumped down against the cold stone wall, staring at the lock of my cell as if I had heat vision.  How was I going to get out of here?  Wait!  The bracelet he gave me! I'm still wearing it!  I'll pick the lock with one of the links!  Sorry Jefferson, but desperate times call for desperate measures.  One… two… three… SNAP!  The bracelet chain broke, leaving one of the golden links in two.  I placed the rest of the bracelet down the breast of my shirt while I placed the broken link into the lock.  Click.  Bingo.
I ran as fast as I possibly could with my bare feet.  But, as per usual, those stupid card guards had to show up and ruin the party!  But it's not like I can't take care of them. Left, right, uppercut!  Jab, kick, punch!  Break, bruise, bleed!  Soon all of the cards were on the floor, either dead or unconscious.  And they say fighting like a girl is a bad thing. Back to running.
And, of-freaking-course, I have to step on a shard of glass from the window I had to break to get into this place!  I couldn’t stop now, not while the palace staff is hot on my trail.  Limping up the stairs, I spot the balcony door.  Should I jump?  Guards are charging at me from all directions, it seemed like jumping was the only option at this point.
I rush over to the door, ignoring the pain in my foot and the bloody footprints I’m leaving behind in my wake.  I lean over the railing of the balcony only to see none other than the dork that is my husband.  "Jefferson!" I yell flailing my arms to grab his attention. He shines his bright smile before holding his arms out to catch me.  I stand on the lip of the railing before making the plunge down into my husband's arms. He caught me bridal style and kissed me on the nose before he put me back on my feet.  "Ready bunny?" He sang, calling me by my pet name.  I nodded as he grabbed my hand and we rocketed towards the looking glass.
[Jefferson's POV]
Poof!  We were back at the small hut buried deep within the forest we call home.  Rapunzel sat on one of the dining room chairs, sighing heavily.  Though, when she tried to relax back into the chair she winced in pain.  "What's wrong?" I urged, worry etched into my voice, "nothing, I'm fine," she choked out.  Something was definitely wrong.  It was just then that I noticed her blood-stained footprints on the floor and the blood pooling onto the seat of the chair.  "You are most certainly not okay, bunny," I pointed out, gathering the necessary medical tools.
I knelt in front of her and lifted her injured foot into my hand.  Her blood seeped onto my leather gloves before dripping onto the floor.  I gaped at the enormous shard of glass wedged into the arch of my wife's foot.  I cautiously placed my free hand over the glass and gently wrapped my fingers around it, ready to remove the it.  Of course, my wife was holding back her squeaks of pain, "it's okay if it hurts, bunny," I remind her.  Swiftly, I yanked the glass out of her foot and threw it out the open window.  I cleaned up the red blood off of her appendage then gently wrapped the wound in a linen bandage.
"Now, take off your dress," I commanded, turning red at the realization of what I just said.  "Jefferson!" Rapunzel playfully scolded me, "I meant so I could stitch up the wounds on your back," I sighed.  She untied her corset, took off her blouse, then turned around to reveal a huge gash under her left shoulder blade.  I hurriedly wiped her flesh of any spilled blood before stitching up the gash.  She winced, jerked, and tensed as I pushed and pulled the needle in and out of her supple flesh.  "Here," I offered her a fresh white blouse to put on.  She gladly put it on and tied up her corset once again.  With the flip of her long, red braid and one glimpse of her dazzling smile, my heart melted.  I had managed to marry the most gorgeous woman to ever exist, I'm sure of it. "I-I lo-ove you," I stuttered, "I love you too," she giggled, pressing a chaste kiss to my lips. After gazing into her eyes for a few moments, I piped up beaming the words, "Oh!  I have something for you!".

HALF CRAZY FOR YOU (Part two- Grace’s gift)
Series Summary: Jefferson had lost his wife years ago.  But, when some mysterious evidence of her survival appears, he must find her.
A/N: Again, I wrote this a while ago, like, last summer, so this writing is pretty mediocre.  And I’m only editing it a little, tiny bit, so that might also add to the suckiness of the fic.
Jefferson x Rapunzel (OC)
Word count: 1076
Summary: Grace helps out the citizens of Storybrooke, but why? (sorry, I suck at summaries)
Warnings: mentions of death

[Third person POV]
Storybrooke. A town that never existed until the curse was laid upon the people of the Enchanted Forest.  It was quaint and fairly quiet.  Everybody knew everybody.  Or so you would think.  Even years after the curse was broken, there were still a few stragglers.  People who hadn't found their family, friends, and/ or loved ones.
It had been almost five years since the curse had been broken by the savior and almost everyone had found their beloved friends and family.  Snow White found Prince Charming, Rumpelstiltskin had reconciled with Belle, and Jefferson had been reunited with his daughter, Grace. The reunion of Grace and her father was the most beautiful one in all of Storybrook.
Grace loved her father very much; possibly even more so than he loved her, which was quite a feat, considering how much Jefferson adored his little girl.  Grace's abundant love for her father was going to be shown in a gift she was planning to get her father.  Currently, she was going around town doing various tasks and chores for the various townspeople to raise money for that special gift she so desperately wanted to give her father.
Knock knock knock.  Grace rasped on the door a few times before Mary Margaret answered the door. "Oh… hello, Grace.  What can I do for you?" Mary asked sweetly bending over so she was eye-level with the little girl.  A bright but shy smile appeared on Grace's face, "I was wondering if there were any chores I could do for you,".  A similar smile appeared on Mary's face, "I could use some help cleaning the kitchen," Mary chirped, "would you help me with that?", Grace nodded eagerly as she skipped into the little apartment.
A half hour had passed and the kitchen was almost spotless.  Grace was a surprisingly good helper.  "Wow, you did a fantastic job!  Where did you learn to clean as well as you do?" Mary questioned, "Papa and I always have to clean our big house together," Grace explained.
Right as Mary was handing Grace a few dollars for her help, Emma and David walked in.  "Hello Mary and… Grace…" Emma gave Mary a questioning glance, silently asking for an explanation as to why the little girl was there.  "Oh uh, Grace here is trying to raise money by doing little tasks and such," Mary explained.  David got down onto his knees so it was easier to make eye contact with Grace, "y'know, my truck could use washing, would you clean it for me?" David smiled, "and while you're at it, if you could, wash my Bug?" Emma added.  Grace giggled and nodded again rushing to the door, "I'll bring down some soap and water," Emma called over to Grace, "and a step-ladder please?" Grace giggled closing the door behind her.
Mary, David, and Emma stared down at Grace, who was thoroughly scrubbing David's truck, from the apartment window.  Grace was having a bit of trouble since she was so little, but she was determined to do the job well!
"Does Jefferson know about this?" Emma asked, waving to Grace who happily waved back.  "I'm going to assume no," Mary sighed sitting down at the kitchen table, "it seemed like Grace wanted this whole thing to be a surprise,". Emma sat down next to her mother and crossed her arms on the table’s edge, "why is she raising the cash?" she asked laying her chin on her crossed arms.  "I have no idea, she never said," Mary shrugged.  The click and squeak of the door alerted the three adults to Grace's presence, "I'm finished," She grunted placing the heavy, half-full bucket of water by the door.  David smiled and handed Grace her earnings.  The face that Grace was currently expressing could probably make flowers grow.  Her eyes were bright, her smile was wide and her thank yous were plenty.  Grace gave David a quick but grateful hug before rushing out the door.  "She's cute," Emma stated, "I wonder if she gets it from her mother,". A solemn silence fell upon the adults, "what?  What's wrong?" Emma asked with concern, "no one knows Grace's mother," David sighed, "she died shortly after Grace was born," "poor Jefferson was left to raise his daughter all on his own," Mary lamented, picking up the bucket of water and dumping its contents into the sink.
As Grace skipped up the steps to her front door, just as Jefferson opened the door with panic written all over his expression. He stopped short in his tracks when he saw his precious daughter standing on the front porch. "Grace!" Jefferson let out a breath of relief as he tightly embraced his daughter, "where were you, I was so worried!" "I'm sorry Papa, I was visiting Miss Blanchard and her family," Grace explained as she led her father back into the house by the hand.  Jefferson was slightly confused, "why were you with Miss Blanchard?"  he asked taking off his hat and coat.  Sure, Grace was a fairly social girl, and she loved her teacher Miss Blanchard, but this was a bit unusual.  Grace would never wander off without telling him where she was going.
"I was helping them clean," Grace was dancing around the surprise gift bit.  Jefferson was still slightly confused but it didn't matter.  Grace was now at home, and she was with someone he trusted, and not to mention she was being helpful, so he pushed his suspicion to the back of his mind.  "My sweet little girl," Jefferson chuckled taking off his gloves and embracing his daughter once again, "now c'mon, it's time for tea,".
"Here you are bunny," Jefferson smiled handing Grace a cup of tea.  Poor Jefferson.  Every time he looked at his young daughter, he was reminded of his late wife.  Her big, brown eyes, her lighthearted laugh, her tiny freckles, even her long hair.  Everything reminded him of Rapunzel.  Grace was the spit ‘n' image of her late mother, why not pass down the affectionate nickname?
"Sugar?" Jefferson offered, "three cubes please," Grace accepted the offer with a grateful smile.  Both raising their cups in silent cheers before taking a sip of their tea.  Grace slid a hand-made drawing over to her father.  Jefferson looked down at the drawing that Grace had made depicting the two of them together with a small laugh.  "It's beautiful Grace," he laughed, to which Grace replied, "happy birthday papa,".
