Daily reminder that most of the sect members follow their sect leaders because they were born to that sect, or that sect was stable and powerful enough to provide them with security, and the Wen Remnants followed Wei Wuxian even though they were afraid of him because that was their only option, but the YMJ members that followed Jiang Cheng ever since the Sunshot Campaign freely CHOSE to do so. He was 17. And an extremely traumatized seventeen-year-old at that. He was simultaneously looking for his brother and participating in a war while rebuilding his sect. Lotus Pier was destroyed. There were only 3 people left of the YMJ sect (2 as far as they knew with WWX missing.) The sect was brought to ruins. The YMJ sect couldn't have had much riches left. But the new sect (and they were enough for YMJ to be called a sect again) CHOSE to follow Jiang Cheng.

Jiang Cheng is NOT best uncle
I am absolutely certain that JC loves JL a lot. I am willing to argue for it. During the night hunt in Dafan JC instructs the disciples to put up those nets so JL can win fame without being in danger. There are several disguised Jiang disciples among the rogue cultivators there, tasked with discreetly looking after JL. Moreover JL often mentions his JiuJiu, to Mo Xuanyu/Wei Wuxian. "Wait till my JiuJiu hears of this!" This means that JL knows that he can depend on JC on a level. JC tries to give him Zidian so he can better defend himself during the Second Siege of the Burial Mounds. Also, JL belongs to his father's family, he can not be JC's heir, so it makes no sense for him to spend a significant amount of time in Lotus Pier growing up. And yet, we are told he did, meaning JC must have specifically asked for it. This means he loved JL and wanted to actively participate in his upbringing. Not to mention that he was the only child of the sister he had loved very much.
So, JC definitely loves JL. However, he is a bad parent to JL. The whole incident with the nets may have been intended to help JL acquire fame and experience without getting into serious danger but also teaches JL that because he is from a rich and powerful clan he can easily disregard and bully others. He shows an appalling lack of manners towards MX (who is his uncle! ) and complete lack of care towards people he has inconvenienced and endangered with his nets, being rude to them and blaming them (some of them are his elders!) instead of apologizing for the trouble. In short he is arrogant, selfish and rude. And it is behaviour JC has fostered by example. Later JC actually encourages him to actually kill a person who hasn't done anything to him, almost turning his nephew into a murderer over a minor dispute JL himself had started. He is pushing JL down a path of vengeance towards every person who might be a demonic cultivator, raising him to be bitter and resentful. He tells JL to not come home if he can't hunt the creature. I am pretty sure that he doesn't mean it, but he tells that to JL , in front of Lan clan disciples no less, and JL almost gets himself killed trying to prove himself and also puts into danger the people who try to help him. Then there is JL's shameful behaviour in Qinghe.JL attacks a man in public with no warning or provocation over the useless Yiling Laozu trinkets the man was selling. This is definitely behaviour JC has taught him. Noone else has mentioned it so far, but that was Qinghe territory, not Lanling or Yunmeng. His other uncle JGY is as far as everyone knows close with the master of Qinghe, Nie Huaisang. What if the Jin heir beating up civilians on the street, makes trouble for his uncle JGY? But JL never seems to consider this, because always the biggest victim JC has probably never taught him about consequences. Afterwards, WX have to rescue JL from the man eating castle because JC was probably too busy looking for WWX and WN than keeping an eye on his thirteen year old kid. We are also shown that JC is definitely torturing people and JL is aware of that. WWX had just saved JL's life, so JL and JC should owe him for that. But JL already knows that pointing that out to his uncle and asking him to behave decently will get him nowhere, so he tricks him in order to let WWX go. Then we are shown through the interactions with other juniors that JL has no friends his own age and several people actively dislike him for good reason.
In short, JC loves JL but has raised JL to be an arrogant, selfish and cruel bully that disregards other people. He is also careless with JL safety and tries to involve him in his crusade against WWX legacy, teaching him to perpetuate the cycle of abuse and violence. He is a terrible parent and role model.
---
Yep, probably loves him but also abuses tf out of him. If you see my recent reblog, plan-d-to-i cites several passages where JC hits and pushes JL around. He's the worst uncle for any child.
