Y'all!!
I got a film camera! And a Helios 44-2!
Kalimar SR200 cameras are just Zenit E cameras, rebadged for sale in the US.
I just wanted the Helios 44 58mm lens so I could adapt it to my Fujifilm XT4 and get swirly bokeh. I was kind of on the fence about spending $120 plus shipping (was looking on ebay). But then I found a listing for a camera and three lenses. One of which was listed as a 44mm lens.
The Helios 44 is a 58mm lens, but this seller missed that, and didn't know they had a $120-170 lens. I bought everything for $99.
The lenses are beautiful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One is a zoom and one is a telephoto. (The visible dust is on the outside of the lenses).
All three lenses are pretty sharp! Coatings are in good condition, everything works, no oil on aperture blades, glass is clean and undamaged, barely any dust inside the lenses themselves. It's incredible.
The camera works, mechanically, and I just shot a roll of test shots using all three lenses to check for light leaks and shutter misfires.
I love that it's fully manual. There's a light meter that doesn't take batteries to work. Everything else is mechanical. I kept thinking I needed to power it down to save on battery life between shots. Nope! Kinda crazy.
Anyway -- now I just have to wait a couple weeks to get the negatives and scans back to see if the camera works.

what camera and filter do u use ???? 👀
I’m actually just shooting on my shitty iphone camera lol no filters going on here!
A lot of the work i do in the industry when it’s not on set is in post, so I’ve encountered a variety of different ways to create a certain look to just about any footage. What i’ve found works best for me is simply shooting at a lower exposure and bringing out things like highlights in post, to help create those deep colors and harsh shadows without having to alter those two settings themselves. Gives it a more flat and painterly feel that I try to strive for as my personal look while also not looking too artificial in camera. Natural colors babyyy! (i use this tactic all the time, not just for my feedism stuff. if you’ve seen my regular photography and cinematography, same stuff going on there).
I DO however use a special app on my phone, since iPhone’s imbedded camera app is kinda shit, user-interface-wise. It’s called FilmicPro, and pretty much lets you manually alter exposure, ISO, shutter speed, zoom and lens changes just like a real camera right there on your phone. A bit pricey, but it has literally replaced my phone’s camera app, i use it for everything. 100% worth it, in my eyes. (I bet I could make my stuff look even better with a more recent phone, i only have 2 lenses to work with.)
That said, the app can only work within the limits of the imbedded camera, so i’d personally like to get a nice fancy camera for myself. Saving up for one now, thinking about a black magic 6k camera with a helios 44 russian lens, both of which are some of my favorites to work with.
GREAT question, i’ll talk your ass off about cameras and cinematography if you’d let me.

Hills
Hey all! A photo collection of hills and pine trees and more. These are my first photos on the XT20 shot with the Helios 44-2! I was intrigued to see the results and actually think the detail from the camera helps but I almost want the EOS M’s more smoothed approach. Definitely interested in how the XT20 handles different lenses, I went through a similar process with the EOS M to determine which…

My parents came back from Poland yesterday and brought my grandfathers Zenit-E camera with them. Unfortunately it isn't fully functional anymore and I need to find out how to repair it. On the bright side I got the famous Helios 44-2 lense, which will probably make great photos once it's cleaned! ( ´◡‿ゝ◡`)◞[ ◉¯]˙✧˖༘ ⋆。˚

Friday Night Arts at CAB!
Photos and Video from Friday Night Arts at CAB featuring Glover's Secondhand, Bloom Stall, Bad Idea Brewing, Salvage Darling, Cab Cafe, and more!
Had a blast this past Friday night checking out their new event on last Friday of the month, Friday Night Arts! (Lot’s of Fridays) I don’t know if you’ve ever been to the CAB but it’s right in the heart of the Arts District. For this shoot, I only used my vintage, manual “character” lens collection (Mir-1b, Helios 44-2, and Jupiter 9).

The adventures with vintage lenses continues. This was taken using a 1982 Helios 44-2. F2 58mm on a Sony A7RII ISO 100, f2, 1/800, shot as a cloud passed over. I am impressed by how sharp this lens is wide open, and I do like the bokeh, and the color is pleasant. I’m curious what other vintage lenses might bring about! Have you used vintage lenses? What experience have you had? (at Mill Creek, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQJxceRpWGI/?utm_medium=tumblr

Helios 44-2 58mm F2 is a legendary lens, but it just got even better!
Welcome the new Helios 44-2 VLFV Cine Edition, proficiently rehoused by IronGlass!
Mission:
Our main goal with was to bring out the best in this lens but addressing the mechanical quirks and limitations of the original body that make it unsuitable for professional, high-pressure work environments where everything must perform at 100%.
By creating new housing for this much-loved lens, we’ve improved its usability for video production considerably. You’ll no longer have to deal with the confusing preset aperture control, unreliable M42 screw mount and its wobbly body. Instead, we now have a rugged, well designed and carefully assembled body that provides plenty of useful features, like integrated follow focus gears, permanent PL or EF mount, expanded focus distance markings, which can now be made imperial as well as metric, plus many more that you can learn about below.
    Features and improvements:
Legendary Soviet Optics with German Carl Zeiss DNA
Unique optical characteristics: Swirly Bokeh, Dreamy Flares, Low Contrast Vintage Look
New, re-designed rugged construction
Permanent PL or EF conversion
Ability to add internal colour and “anamorfake” modifications
95mm OD front for easy compatibility with clip-on matte boxes
86mm filter thread for use with your favourite filters
Fluid / Click-less Aperture Adjustment with correct markings
Relocated focus ring for better mount clearance and follow focus compatibility
Expanded focus distance markings scale
Imperial lens marking option available
Geared aperture and focus rings
Full Frame FF + VV Sensor Coverage
  Not a one-off lens:
Helios 44-2 VLFV Cine Edition though is not just a one-off lens project. It’s a first step in the development of the full rehoused Soviet lens set. This lens marks a first step in the development of a full rehoused Soviet lens set. This 58mm will soon be joined by a 37mm and 85mm, followed by the 20mm, 28mm and 135mm, covering just about any focal length you might need, allowing to use these lenses on full projects.
Price:
The price for this first lens is $950. Some might think it’s a lot and some will think it’s a bargain. Both can be right as it depends on your needs. What’s important to understand though is that while Helios 44-2 is an inexpensive lens, it’s the rehousing itself what you really pay for (consider the optics to be a free bonus) and if you are familiar with the lens rehousings, you’ll know that they generally cost much more. While we don’t claim this 1st edition to be at the same level as the $3-4k per lens rehousings, it’s still a massive step up from the original body and mechanics. If you really want and need a professional production-ready Helios 44-2, then this price is well worth paying.
We’ve already sold out the first “October” batch, so I guess enough people like this idea, but you can still order one of the 20 lenses from the second “November” batch. A lot of people missed out on the 20 x 20% discount offer, so we extended the 20% discount offer to the 20 VLFV customers ordering one of the 20 lenses in the “November” batch, with the aim to deliver second 20 lenses by the end of November. All you need to do is use a discount code VLFV20 at the checkout. Even better, you will get 10% off all your future Cine Edition lens purchases.
You can pre-order it now on IronGlassAdapters.com

Veroksis (Helios-16) - Captain in The House of Wolves (Kell Koris, The Knightbreaker)
Tangled Web Mask - Dead Orbit Resurrection.
Tangled Web Grips - Vanguard Discipline
Scorned Baron Vest - Metro Shift
Vigil of Heroes - Metro Shift
Tangled Web Cloak - Metro Shift
Duke MK. 44 - New Monarch Regalia
Tried to replicate how Veroksis might feel comfortable walking around in. The tattered cloak with fur lining, the Eliksni helm with multiple lenses with various filters (Infrared, Visual light, Heat and Night Vision), the outfit with pieces of armor strapped on or sown into the fabric, spare pouches and pockets tied to the thighs and waist.
Strapped to his forearms are braces and gyro-stabilizers, to help against the high recoil of the hand-cannons and heavy sniper rifles that Veroksis normally uses. (Sigh,, I miss the Devil’s Dawn,, and Imago Loop,, and a few other D1 guns)

Week 8
Tumblr media
These three lenses are extremely different in both function and design. On the left is a Helios 44-2 lens from the soviet Union produced first in 1958. In the middle is a modern Sony lens. On the right a Sigma canon FD mount lens from the 70s. All of these lenses have similarities and differences. Both vintage lenses have the aperture ring on the lens while in the modern lens it is absent because this is controlled electronically. These lenses all achieve roughly the same function of converting light into an image in a camera but the designs are all fairly different. Throughout all of these observations it is interesting how these different items achieve the same function yet are different visually.

These three doorknobs are all in the same house together yet have very different designs. They all provide the same function, but, might appeal to different groups of people more. In this case, I am guessing my landlord was replacing doorknobs with whatever was the cheapest (or free) options.

The Apple Magic mouse II is possibly the worst designed computer mouse ever. It is much too flat to be comfortable for anyone's hands and while this design is sleek and unlike any other mouse, the lack of a scroll wheel in the presence of a touch sensitive surface is not a great substitution. The absolute worst abomination in terms of this mouse is of course the location of the port necessary for charging it. The lightning port is on the bottom of the mouse making it impossible to charge at the same time as using so, for anyone who uses their mouse for long periods of time, expect delays.
Tumblr media
The design of my headphones here is very interesting to me. The open back design allows for a more immersive listening experience. Furthermore, this is a great example of universal design with the brail letter R next to the english one. This allows blind people to use this product in the same way as those who can see.
