Red, White and Royal Blue

I Chose to read this book because I had seen it advertised everywhere on my social media and honestly I am so glad I did. Not only was I unable to put the book down but I have gone back to rereading multiple times.

Story/plot Line:

The story is told from the perspective of Alex Claremont - Diaz, the first son of the United States of America. Essentially, he has a hatred filled relationship with one of the Princes of England, Henry George Edward Jame Fox-Mount-christen Windsor (a running joke throughout the book). The two are seen falling into a wedding cake and the White House press decided the must put up the illusion they are great friends and there is absolutely no chance the White House and Crown had any strife. However, as anyone who has read an enemy to lovers story can predict how this will end up. As the two grow closer Alex begins to see Henry as less of an annoying goodie two shoe and more as a mysterious friend.

Fast forward and the Prince has come to visit the White House for a New Years party. Alex finds his sulking the the kiss. Henry panics and runs back to England then proceeds to ghost Alex. Alex begins to have a full Bi-Panic, one I can certainly relate to, and contact Henry. Finally, several weeks later Henry returns for a White House event and Alex corners him. Like any good, romance Smut follows and the two begin a friends what benefits relationship. Shockingly Alex begins to realize perhaps he has more than sexual feels for Henry and begins to fall in love. However, as this progresse the differing political atmosphere of the world in brought into account the main charactes (including those outside of Alex and Henry) must has the ramifications of gay romance.

Towards the late haft of the novel Alex and Henry admit their feelings and decided to attempt a relationship. It come to the American media and the whole friendship illusion blows up in everyone’s face. Alex and Henry are faced with the ramification of their relationship in the publics eye. The story the ends with a mild conclusion to his problem and Alex’s mother being re-elected as president. Alex and Henry are still together and appear to be set up in a manner where the reader is left with the impression they are together for the long run.

Overall the story was predictable but not in a bad way. I always LOVE an enemies to lovers stories. What I did not expect was how well McQuiston would intigrated the aspects of mental illness with queerness. Henry’s struggle with his sexual identity with his public identity is SO well done. His depression and anxiety were protrayed in a way that felt not only realistic as well as relatable. As someone with anxiety and depression, I felt like Henry was not shown as being “over dramatic” or “too emotional” like some literary depiction.

Writing style:

I felt the writing style was amazing. It felt artistic without being so metaphoric you can’t understand it. I also loved the amount of humor added. The emails and text Henry and Alex exchanged made me laugh out loud, not just laugh under my breath or in my head. The characters were well rounded and I was invested in everyone’s story not just Alex and Henry’s without being so overdone it become unclear who the book is about.

Queer representation:

I felt Alex’s journey to discovering his Bi-ness was so relatable. I also did not realize I was Bi until college because I fet the way I look at other people was exactly how everyone else did but also so obvious once said out loud that you almost feel studpid for not knowing. Where as Henry represents Queer kids who knew they were queer very early on. This book also shows diversity with inclusion of same sex relationship, Transgender characters, and gender fluidity. In some ways it felt like an idealized version of the queer community with queer characters in positions of power with minorities and women always in major positions of power! It shows how the world could be with less discrimination. However, it does not create a world with no discrimination. Alex is faced with the consequences of queer relationships within the American government and Henry with the queer community with royalty. I also love that Henry points out how much the world would discriminate against him for his sexuality, but the crown behaves as if it is not responsible for colonization and genocde around the world. This particularly touched my heart as I could 4 classes in college on genocide and 5 no colonization.

Final thoughts:

Honestly, this book was beyond what I expected it to be. It was a beautiful romance between two men who learn to complete each other set in the world of politics with humorous under tone! 10 out of 10 would and have read again.
