The world faces serious challenges due to COVID-19, and with nationwide lockdowns being a regular thing, this has left more people working from home. And while everyone is stuck at home, it’s easy to slip into a sedentary lifestyle.  Especially now, taking care of your physical and mental health are key to maintaining success and happiness. However, your diet also plays an important role that you should consider. With that in mind, here are some tips for keeping a healthy diet while working from home: Start with a Light Breakfast It can seem like a difficult task and something easily missed. In the past, you may have been accustomed to packing in a lunch or grabbing a bite from the coffee shop at the office, right?. But now that you find yourself at home every day, what should your diet look like? First and foremost, breakfast is an important meal to start your day. When working from home, consider a healthy and filling breakfast, like a bowl of oatmeal or some fruit and yogurt. The last thing you want to do is fill your stomach with a heavy, oily meal, so try to eat something light, but also filling and nutritious. Fueling your morning is a great way to keep your energy levels up and food cravings at bay until later in the day. Keep Your Diet in Check Throughout the Day It’s a different ball game when working from home. The distractions are real, and you could become bored and may want to fill your “spare time” with eating. If you find yourself in this category, check out these tips to keep your diet going strong: 1. Create a work-friendly space If you’re faced with working from home then creating a designated office or workspace is important. Try not to work at the kitchen table, because with everything food-related at hand, it can become a distraction. Despite having less space, it’s possible to create a work station in your home. Distance from the kitchen may not be possible for everyone, and if that’s the case, then make a rule for yourself: you’ll only visit the kitchen to fill up on a beverage (preferably more water) and at designated times to have a meal or a snack. 2. Square Meals Work for Longer Sustenance Working from home comes with the territory of feeling tempted by easy food access. To help curb this urge, try to eat bigger, more sustaining meals. Remember, you need to eat to boost your energy levels, so rather than eating 5-6 tiny meals and making constant trips to the kitchen, square your meals with satisfying portions. At lunchtime (whenever you take a lunch), have a sandwich with some chips. Perhaps you can make a big salad with a side of fruit? If you have leftovers from yesterday, heat them up and save some time on meal prep. Eating square meals with more sustenance can help you keep more energy while lowering distractions. However, be sure not to eat too much…you may end up on the couch taking a nap. 3. Prepare Your Meals and Snacks Ahead of Time As mentioned above, to avoid binge-eating an array of unhealthy snacks, you can create a menu and arrange your meals ahead of time for each day. You’re not exempt from eating snacks, but having a strategy is handy. When doing your thing from home, it’s easy to start grazing on snacks all day, but that would lead to unwanted weight gain. With a meal schedule in place, you’ll have more control and you can set your schedule beforehand to maximize your efficiency at home. For a great template to follow for meal prep, check out this link. 4. Make Time for a Daily Routine and Exercise Finally, make time for a daily routine and exercise while you’re working from home and maintaining a healthy diet. For example, doing household chores (vacuuming, sweeping, washing windows) during work breaks can help you kickstart healthy blood circulation and burn calories while cleaning your home—two birds with one stone! Also, you can get into a routine with a daily time slot to take a brisk walk, exercise, swim, run, or whatever else you like to do for physical activity. Plan, Plan, Plan Managing your time and creating a to-do list for each day will make it a little simpler to accommodate work-life-balance. In these uncertain times, although you may be stuck at home, you can find comfort in know that there’s a freelancer community to connect with. Tons of people are working from home and going through the same experiences that you are, so if you need some reassurance or a sense of community, head over to HeroKita to get involved. Who knows, if you enjoy working from home, you may even want to transition to doing it full-time!

I know that my mind starts to wander when things get out of hand. For instance, if I have an entire day of deadlines to meet, I’ll drink coffee nonstop and skip a meal. If I suddenly have to drive across town for a meeting, I may wake up extra early to finish an assignment before taking off. Altogether, distractions happen, but in order to maintain my success, I definitely have to stick to a freelance routine. I know we all have our own lives going on, but maybe you can find some insight for your own schedule by learning from what I do! Here’s a typical workday for me and how I maintain my sanity as a freelancer: Follow a 6-Hour Rule Apparently it’s better to get 8 hours of sleep every night, but for me, I follow a 6-hour rule. This means that if I’m up until midnight working on something, I go to bed and always sleep a solid 6 hours. I follow this rule no matter what. Even if I had something due the following morning, it has to wait until after 6 am. Once again, 6 hours may not seem like enough to some people, but I’ve found that if I get anything less than 6 hours of sleep, I crash in the middle of the day and can’t sustain a high level of writing work. So, I urge you to find your sweet spot for sleep and stick to it no matter what. Check Emails First After I get my beauty rest, I leave the bedroom and sit at the kitchen table with my laptop. In my opinion, it’s not healthy to jump right into working, and instead, I check emails first and read up on current events. It’s a process of waking up slow and rising with the day that helps get me started. I allow my body to wake up and adjust, and then once I read all my messages and find out what I have to do for the day, I make myself a cup of coffee in the kitchen and head into my office to get cracking. Take a Lunch Break Usually, I skip breakfast during the workweek. However, I always take a lunch break. So my first work session takes place from 8 am to 12 pm, and within this block, I try to get as much done as I can. I start with the hardest thing on my list, and then one by one, I check things off my agenda. Then, when 12 pm strikes, I step away from the standing desk and make myself lunch. Overall, you need a midday snack to keep yourself energized. Especially with something that uses a lot of mental energy, like writing or graphic design, taking a few minutes away from the computer and having a sandwich, some chips, a bowl of fruit—it’ll help your brain readjust and break up your day into chunks rather than one huge undertaking.  As a freelancer, it can be easy to forget why these breaks exist, but don’t get caught in the burnout of living at your desk.  Take a Nap or Go on a Run And after lunch, I follow-up my day with one of these two activities.  Obviously, a run is probably the healthiest option of the two, but a nap can be just as effective when trying to rejuvenate yourself. This is basically my top priority.  The idea is to do whatever you can to stay awake and carry yourself out for the rest of the day. For me, that means doing a 30-minute jog outdoors (about 3 miles) or taking a 30-minute catnap. After either one, I always feel happier and more relaxed. Plus, I get a bit eager to stand and the desk and take on another work session. Think About Rounds, Not the Entire Match So now, it’s about 1:30 pm and I’m back at the computer finishing up deadlines. I like to think about freelance work as rounds and not the entire match. For example, I work a morning round and an afternoon round. On some days, if I skip a morning round, I’ll work an afternoon round and an evening round. Then again, if I have an audition in the middle of the day or a meeting with a new client, I’ll do a morning round and round at night. When you think about your workday as rounds, it lessens the stress of trying to finish everything at once. Not to mention, it gives you flexibility throughout the day to do a lot more than just work. You create time for personal projects, you enjoy a moment with friends, you can actually enjoy the food you’re eating and not scarf things down in a hurry. Have you ever seen a busy cafe in the mid-morning and wonder how everyone there can afford to just kick back during the day? It’s because they compartmentalize their time and make it work for them, not the other way around. Follow Your Freelance Routine Every Day Finally, all you have to do now is follow your freelance routine every day. The reason why so many people falter with freelance work or feel like the experience doesn’t work for them (or couldn’t work for them) is because they don’t treat it like a job. Unfortunately, that 9-to-5 cycle that so many people dread actually has some merit to it, and even though you may not be in a shared office space or headquarters, you still have to have that same mentality as a freelancer at home. Where freedom comes in is where you happen to find yourself during your set work hours. There have been days where I’ve sat at airports all day writing. I’ve gone to coffee shops to work, laundry mats waiting for a load of colors, Super Bowl parties sitting in the back of the room on my laptop. That said, freedom and success lie in your ability to keep your routine going despite the obstacles you run into along the way. And one of the best things about HeroKita is that your freelance work is completely in your own hands. Since you get to work directly clients, you can set your own rates, set a schedule that works for you, and deliver results on your own time. Remember, success comes from keeping things consistent, so use HeroKita to your advantage and make it an asset to your freelance routine.

Being a freelancer means running your own business. When I first started freelance writing, my mindset revolved around how much money to charge per word and how many assignments I could pick up every month. However, as time passed, I realized that I was going about my freelance career all wrong—I needed to treat it like a business. After all, I had become an entrepreneur in every sense of the word, and if you’re like me, once you realize you need help with something, a book is always the best place to seek advice.  So I set out to the library, online, and my local bookstores. I took recommendations from peers and role models, and after several years of absorbing information, these 6 books have cemented themselves as pillars to my new understanding of what it means to be an entrepreneur.  If you’re looking for some insight into your own entrepreneurial pursuits, this list is for you: 1. Shoe Dog by Phil Knight You should know right off the bat that I’m a huge advocate for running. So right away, when I came across this book—“Shoe Dog”— by Phil Knight, the founder of Nike, I read it from cover to cover in a mad dash. And it’s not just for those who love running and sports history—Shoe Dog offers an incredible story of how one man’s passion and risk lead to creating one of the most impactful companies of all-time.  Knight shares his early life as a young man finding his way in the world. He expresses a profound love for his hometown, the athletes in his city, and chronicles his ups and downs as a young entrepreneur navigating the risky landscape of retail success.  2. What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami Okay, so one more book about running, and then I’ll switch gears—I promise. “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running” by Murakami is the ultimate book for writers who want to learn how to transform their passion into a successful routine. For most freelancers, they may wait to feel inspired or rely on clients to get them work, but Murakami presents the idea that a serious writer—a successful artist or creator—must be disciplined to achieve their goals. Not only that, but anyone who works from home also needs to take care of their personal health and well being! This book provides you with the wisdom you need to remain patient and diligent with your work, and most of all, to appreciate the time you have to be creative and change the world.   3. Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki Believe it or not, I actually read this book as a kid, and to this day, I still follow the principles I’ve learned to ensure that money works for me—not the other way around.  Kiyosaki’s “Rich Dad Poor Dad” details two perspectives of work ethic that breeds two different results. On one hand, the man who works hard and saves makes little progress, but the man who invests and leverages income to generate more revenue is the one who retires early. Kiyosaki explains this process through his own childhood experience, comparing the habits of his own dad to the father of one of his closest friends.  For anyone who’s tired of the rat race and wants to work smarter instead of harder, this is the book for you.  4. The Warren Buffet Way by Robert G. Hagstrom Now, you don’t have to have an interest in stocks or securities to appreciate the wizardry of Warren Buffet. All you need is a passion for success and a willingness to dedicate yourself to what you love most.  Hagstrom’s “The Warren Buffet Way,” is a compelling overview of Buffet’s life and how he came to be the premier investor of the 21st century. Buffet goes into detail about how he chooses stocks, he explains the amount of work and study it takes to understand a business or industry, and he also reinforces the value in being humble with your success. For instance, he still lives in the first home he bought in Nebraska, which has appreciated multiple times over. That’s what you’ll take away from reading this book—the long-term value of money and how to plan for the future.  5. How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie I get that this book may be a little played out, but its principles still ring true to this day—anyone looking to move up the corporate ladder or forge meaningful connections on their own should learn them.  “How to Win Friends & Influence People” offers tons of practical lessons for success as a businessman or entrepreneur, but in my opinion, the greatest lesson is the idea of being proactive. Carnegie explains this process in terms of someone having a difficult boss at work. Rather than being reactive to their feedback or displeasure, you can change the outcome of circumstances by being proactive with your work ethic. The goal is to anticipate problems and reactions before they arise, and by doing so, you position yourself as a leader in the eyes of those who make important decisions.  That’s just one nugget of useful information this incredible book has to share.  6. John Fetzer: On a Handshake by Dan Ewald Lastly, Dan Ewald’s biography of the late-great John Fetzer is a story of immense success and humbleness that goes unmatched.  John Fetzer was part owner of the Detroit Tigers baseball team in 1956. Within six years, he gained full ownership and spearheaded baseball’s national television contract— which is still a major source of revenue for the organization today. Of course, being a baseball fan may make this book more enjoyable, but the greatest takeaway is Fetzer’s dedication to excellence as a leader and role model for his community.  He also founded that Fetzer Institute in Kalamazoo, MI, which is a non-profit dedicated to the principles of love and forgiveness around the world.  Keep Growing with HeroKita Don’t feel like you have to go out and read all of these books at once, but definitely choose one that you think can give you the greatest insight into your own life. As a freelancer or business owner, it’s important to keep growing and learning, and along with these awesome books, don’t forget that HeroKita is here to help. We offer tons of opportunities to improve your skills and build your success. Getting involved and staying productive is half the battle when it comes to your success, so use HeroKita to get your foot in the door.
