A minimum of 20 CPE hours must be completed in each of these two CPE reporting years.

For the three-year reporting period beginning January 1, 2006, a minimum of 90 CPE credits with a minimum of 15 CPE hours per year

For the three-year reporting periods beginning on or after January 1, 2009, a minimum of 120 CPE credits with a minimum of 20 CPE hours per year.

Any person applying for a CPA certificate three or more years after successful completion of the CPA exam, who intends to provide any of the professional services described above, must complete the 120 CPE credit requirement as though it had been applicable during the three years prior to the date of his application.

If the CPA obtained his CPA certificate at a time when he did not intend to provide services for the public and later decides to provide for the public the services, then he or she must, prior to performing such services, meet the 120 CPE credit requirement.

Requirements for retaining records of continuing education.

It is the responsibility of the CPA to keep all evidence of completion of CPE credits for a period of three years. The documentation must be in the form of a sponsor provided certificate of completion or other verification or written statement from the provider of the CPE course.

The CPA certificate holder has the responsibility to provide documentation of completed CPE to the board only if requested.

With deadline approaching, US scrambles to reunite migrant families

By Caitlin Dickerson, NY Times, 27 July 2018

New York: The US federal government was rushing on Thursday to reunite the last 1634 migrant families separated at the Southwest border who have been deemed “eligible” for reunification, in the final hours of a court-ordered scramble to reverse a contentious immigration policy that drew international condemnation.

While the government appeared to be on track to meet Thursday’s deadline, its work to address the effects of family separation is far from over. The parents who were deemed eligible for reunification represent only about a third of all those who were separated from their children after crossing the border, a practice that began last summer and escalated in May.

At least 917 other parents were not cleared to recover their children this week because they failed criminal background or parental verification checks. About 460 others appeared to have been deported without their children, and the government has yet to find them.

Their futures, along with those of about 37 children whose parents have not yet been identified, remain uncertain.

“The only deadline they are meeting is the one they have set for themselves,” said Lee Gelernt, lead counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, which filed the federal lawsuit challenging the family separations. “The government should not be getting applause for cleaning up their own mess, but moreover, they’re still not meeting the deadline for all the families.”

Still, it appeared that the judge handing the case, Dana M. Sabraw of the US District Court in San Diego, was inclined to allow the government some leeway in complying with his order to rapidly bring separated families back together.

“The parties are really working through the issues in a very measured and successful way given the enormity of the undertaking,” Sabraw said at a status hearing early this month.

The reunifications have unfolded in chaotic scenes across the country. Many have been concentrated in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, where families have been funnelled into federal offices that were designated as “staging facilities,” overwhelming local resources to the extent that some parents have had to wait days after arriving to rejoin their children.

At one such facility in South Texas, the Port Isabel Detention Centre, the government has been labelling some parents as “released” while they are still in custody, according to Bethany Carson, who works for Grassroots Leadership, a nonprofit advocacy group in Austin.

Carson said that hundreds of parents were sent to Port Isabel in recent weeks. After receiving word in the middle of the night from Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials that their children had arrived, the parents quickly changed into street clothes and were broken into groups of about 70 to wait to be reconnected.

Some waited up to a week, Carson said, and were not allowed access to showers, phones or religious services, while efforts stalled to return their children.

“They’re completely cut off from the outside world,” she said. “And officials are saying they’re free.”

The hours and days after reunification have come with their own challenges, which have largely been absorbed by aid groups tapped by the government to provide emergency shelter and food, as well as transport. While it is not typical for the government to support migrants once they are released from federal custody, the separation policy left many families far from the border, where a long-established network of shelters and volunteer organisations have traditionally provided support.

Danielle Bernard, a spokeswoman for Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, one of two organisations working with the government on family reunifications, said her group, too, was feeling the time crunch of the court order.

Bernard said that the organisation’s two offices coordinating efforts in Arizona and New Mexico were given only a few days to prepare to receive about 300 families--or at least 600 people in all.

“This has really been something completely new to all of us,” Bernard said. “Usually we have weeks or months to develop programs to make sure people have the support they need. In this situation we’ve been given like 24 hours’ notice.”

As an avid technology enthusiast, I’ve followed Bitcoin (COIN) for years. I remember when people thought the coin will never reach $100, when it would never reached $1000, and when it will never reach $10,000. And now it has peaked at more than $20,000, and according to the coin valuation website, Coin Market Cap, with a value of more than $200 billion. Not bad for a currency that didn’t exist a decade ago.

Recently, Seeking Alpha contributor Victor Dergunov wrote a well written article on Bitcoin’s path to $1 million. However, in my opinion, it’s not all sunshine and glory. Bitcoin, fundamentally, does not offer any benefits to the vast majority of the population. And with minimal government support, and a high technical barrier to entry, people will be pushed away from using it. And the currency is already running into problems with its original goals. This means that, even if cryptocurrency does become part of everyday use, it is likely another currency will replace Bitcoin.

While the United States is noticeably ahead of the curve, according to The Slate, 85% of all transactions involve cash. That means even if cryptocurrency becomes widely accepted and a part of the United States, these families back home receiving the money will have to convert that money to cash themselves. At major exchanges like Coinbase, transaction fees often are several percent.

While Bitcoin itself has minimal transaction fees for sending the money, transaction fees exist for converting Bitcoin that are similar to that for converting USD. Those transaction fees, and the heavy cash economy of these third world countries, will make Bitcoin less effective for global money transfers. And that doesn’t take into account the fact that the vast majority of people don’t send money internationally.

Bitcoin is also often touted as providing investors with a large amount of security and transparency.
