Heterotheca villosa 'Ruth Baumgardner'. Also called Chrysopsis. I think this cultivar is taller than the species. Starts blooming mid-September. https://www.instagram.com/p/B3NxXPHgY_L/?igshid=m4xz3b7rf5ro

Hairy False Goldenaster
Tumblr media
Scientific Name: Heterotheca villosa
4-10″; full sun; any well-drained soil; drought tolerant
Description: This is a low-growing, prolific bloomer that does exceptionally well in poor, dry soils, whether they be sandy, gravelly, or clayey. Though it doesn’t like wet conditions, it adapts to so many other situations that it is commonly found growing all over the western U.S. This is also an extremely resilient plant, known to bounce back from being trampled or even driven over by vehicles. Another bonus is the plant’s long bloom period that spans the growing season from spring to frost. Leaves are small, narrow, and look grayish green because of the tiny hairs they carry. Flowers are abundant, bright yellow, and about 1” in diameter. Both the common and scientific names focus on the plant’s hairiness (“villosa” =  hairy), owing to the plant’s hairy stems. Leaves have a lovely scent when crushed.
Height: 4-10”
Spread/Spacing: 10-12”/ 12-15”
Exposure: full sun, part shade
Soil Tolerances: gravelly or sandy soil; silty, sandy loam, or clay soils

Water: low; excellent drought tolerance
Bloom: May-October
