"For us the breastfeeding was an integral part of the transformative journey of becoming a mother. I always wanted to breastfeed my baby and said I would do so for at least 6 months. But once my son was born breastfeeding became something so much more than feeding. It was an important part of healing from a challenging birth, bonding, getting to know one another and processing the unfathomable love between us. It’s a closeness, an intricate and profound communication between mother and infant. I couldn’t have known what it would mean to me, certainly not in our society where you don’t tend to see much breastfeeding as you grow up. It’s about connecting, tuning in with each other, offering my son a safe place to discharge energy or difficult emotions - the way he feeds reflects how he is feeling at that time. The breast is the place he turns to for a visceral dose of love, comfort, support and safety.

I had a lot of issues early on with pain, oversupply and an infection that was misdiagnosed. It was hard and stressful at times. Breastfeeding support groups were invaluable, and I couldn’t have imagined giving up even though there were moments of tears (mine and my son’s) and near desperation. Now 15 months along those issues are a distant memory and I hope to allow my son to self-wean when he’s ready. I can’t imagine stopping anytime soon although I didn’t know I’d feel like that until I became a mother. It makes me feel sad and a bit angry that our society doesn’t teach women about breastfeeding, that it’s not something we see everywhere all the time, that breastfeeding past six months is considered ‘extended’ breastfeeding rather than the human norm, which it is and was in this country too until around a hundred years ago."

Ona mi pierwsza pokazała księżyc i pierwszy śnieg na świerkach, i pierwszy deszcz.

Byłem wtedy mały jak muszelka, a czarna suknia matki szumiała jak Morze Czarne.

Matka to postać, która obecna jest w naszym życiu zawsze. Analizujemy jej wizerunek w literaturze i sztuce, słuchamy o niej na lekcjach religii i etyki. Psychoanaliza uczy nas o jej znaczącym wpływie na naszą osobowość. Przez długi czas stanowimy z matką jedność, zarówno gdy jest, jak i gdy jej nie ma.

O paradoksie obecności i braku matki oraz o jej kojących właściwościach jest poniekąd książka “The Hidden Mother” Lindy Fregni Nagler. W bezpośrednim tłumaczeniu tytuł książki to “Ukryta matka”. I rzeczywiście – obrazy zawarte w publikacji to ponad tysiąc zdjęć, na których widzimy dzieci i ich ukryte matki. A ukryte są one na wiele sposobów: pod materiałem, za meblem, za dzieckiem, poza kadrem, czy nawet mają po prostu wymazane twarze. Ale dlaczego się ukrywają? Ponieważ aż do 1920 roku proces wykonania zdjęcia wymagał tak długiego czasu naświetlania, że maluch nie był w stanie samodzielnie usiedzieć przed obiektywem. Z pomocą więc przybywała matka, która swoją obecnością uspokajała sytuację i portret mógł zostać wykonany.

Cała historia ukrytych matek nie tylko obrazuje jak istotną role w życiu dziecka odgrywa jego rodzicielka oraz jak na przestrzeni lat zmieniła się technika fotografowania. Historia “The Hidden Mother” pokazuje również, że wyobraźnia ludzka nie ma żadnych granic, nawet jeśli prowadzi to do efektów dość absurdalnych. Książka fenomenalna. Świetnie zaprojektowana (jak zresztą każda publikacja wydawnictwa MACK). Nakład niestety został wyprzedany. Pozostaje szukać białych kruków na ebayu czy innych tego typu portalach z nadzieją, że cena nie będzie zbyt wygórowana.
