#2017bestnine - it comes as no surprise all the photos that have been returned deal with the pursuit of high places using bikes or just my two feet. From L>R, T>B: (1 @vagabrown captures the finish of The Tour of the Highest Hundred at the North Boulder city limits sign, two months after I pedaled out, 105 mountains ago. I'm still in awe that it was such a success! YES!: Try it yourself! (2 @semi_rad's #bikeadvocacy shirt makes me the most popular kid whenever I wear it. YES! You should get one of your own! (3 On the summit block of Longs Peak! Totally spent after ascending a cumulative total of something like 31 miles in 2 months! About an hour later, I'd slip, fall, and terribly sprain my ankle - something I'm still recovering from! (4 Summit of Pyramid Peak, finishing up the Elks this summer - one of the last cruxes of the #highesthundred. Great scrambling on Pyramid and the Maroon Bells Traverse, which I did all in the same day, with Thunder Pyramid done the next day. (5 Going a little crazy topping out on Hagerman Pass out of Leadville to Basalt, carrying a bear canister some hundred miles twice to follow the Wilderness rules of Maroon Bells/Snowmass. Thanks @leadvilleoutdoors for having them available to rent! (6 Showing off my sleep system for the summer! Thanks @ultimatedirectionusa for the FK Tarp + FK Bivy and @Sierradesigns for the Cloud 800 bag! (7 Topping out @13,000'+ Mosquito Pass! Out of the Sawatch and into the Mosquitos! (8 #tbt of taking a fixed geared @intergalacticsurlybikes Cross Check up 14er Pikes Peak in a snow storm, 'cause that seemed like a great idea! Roundtree from Denver, stopping at Bierdstadt, Grays + Torres on the way home) (9 Showing some degrading conditions on top of Mt. Evans last September. Caught in a snow storm at night with little counting for warm clothes - totally sweet! Here's to getting up high #selfpowered once again in 2018! #longmayyourange!

Longs/Meeker: 9/16/17: Once climbing up the ledges out of the Loft Couloir, I was assaulted a bit more directly by the Jet Stream winds that sometimes reside on Longs Peak. The summit of Meeker is above. I used the mountain itself to shield myself from the wind, quickly summit before being blown quite literally off, then descend onto the Loft. The Loft, even though it's quite flat, was the crux of the climb. No where to hide from the full brunt of the terrible wind -a choke point between two peaks the wind is being forced between. I've been turned back many times on Longs by wind like this - usually much, much lower down. It's just comedy - a Marcel Marceau mime act or Chaplin's Gold Rush, trying to merely walk into such a force - just to be blown backwards. Now I know why everyone I passed gave me strangr looks and was descending!My mind drifted to @alan.arnette and his unfortunate accident on neighboring Twin Sisters, where a great gust of wind picked him up and threw him against the rocks, breaking his leg. Careful, Ranger. I'm convalescing here at home at the moment - I'm wrecked mentally, but I'd like to share photos from my last day on Meekers/Longs on 9/16/17. Started on the trail with a light rain, that soon turned to.snow, and that snow was accumulating. I soon past many parties of people turning back from their own summit attempts, I knew it was going to be He'll up thete, but I persisted. This is a shot near Chasm Lake of Longs and the shoild r of Meeker. New snow is starting to cover the rocks and tundra; clouds are low. Windy. 98 peaks down. 98! On top of Crystal Peak closing the last of this project's grand enchainments. The sun is setting, and I look just a little dazed. 3:00am start to stumble up Silverheels, a quick nap back on Hoosier Pass, then off to McCollough Gulch to summit Quandary from the West Ridge route, then off to Fletcher, Atlantic, Pacific, and finally here on Crystal Peak. Bomb down the southeast face of Crystal - trying not to get cliffed out, then into the basin to navigate the glacier smooth slabs and wetlands of the Mohawk Lakes area in the dark. Thunderstorms well in the distance flashed brilliantly in the sky, their violent lightshow reflected in the perfect mirror surfaces around me. And I in this enormous basin all alone. Not even a high altitude moose to chase me out. 10 minute wink at the Wheeler Trail junction, and a sleepy stumble back to the bike at the trailhead at 12:30am. The Tenmile/Mosquito range has been closed down! The DeCaLiBron loop, plus the two Centennials was a strange day. This is from the summit of Clinton, which gives you a bird's eye view of the enormous molybdenum mine that's both tearing down Bartlett Mountain, as well as digging a huge pit beside it. The rest of the day was dodging thunder snow showers and hiding out under cliffs. My beard stood straight up from the electrical activity in the air! Dangerous. Nothing in town was open, so I ate dinner out of the venerable Al-Mart general store. Rain on and off. Thunder Pyramid summit! I guess after 4 twenties+ peaks of experience in the last few weeks, Thunder's difficulties could be dealt with intelligently. Some of the best views found in the area, but you gotta work for it. Spot the Bells, Hagerman, Snowmass, Capitol, and Pyramid of course in one sweeping view. I'm amazed I've been on top of all of them.
