Are you carrying unknown privilege?

To me privilege is a certain advantage or prestige held by a group in power or the majority that develops from the oppression of a minority group. The advantages of people with privilege often don’t think about it because they have never had to experience the oppressive side. One must understand it takes active effort and research to have empathy for the underprivileged. Although you cannot get rid of your privilege, you can acknowledge it, for me I am a young white educated female who was able to work, take out loans and get financial support from my parents to afford school.

I didn’t think much about my privilege until I got to university and started making more diverse friends and hearing their experiences that made me question a lot. For example, my friend who was born in India would tell me stories about how people judged her from such a young age by the colour of her skin and all the lost opportunities she missed out on because if this. She would get ridiculed by classmates for having “ethnic smelling food” and she lost a lot of her confidence because of this. As a society we need to do a better job raising more tolerant children and change the future for the better because no child should feel like that. As outlined in our readings “prevention is wiser and less costly than repairing damage” this means that if we implement tolerance from the start problems like oppression and racism will be less substantial. I am extremely grateful my parents raised me to not judge someone by the colour of their skin, religion, sex etc. but some people were not raise with that privilege.

When considering nature interpretation things like fresh air, the outdoors, animals or weather may come to mind. However, have you ever stopped to consider the role of privilege in nature interpretation? Environmental privilege is a concept referring to how privileged groups keep environmental amenities for themselves. A key factor that influences privilege is social class, people who are able to afford activities like sailing, camping, canoeing, swimming, kayaking have a different sense of place to nature than someone who has never experience that. There is a lot of gatekeeping in the hiking community for instance, if you don’t have the newest backpack, shoes or water bottle you are made to feel bad about yourself. The first step to changing this is recognizing out privilege then coming up with a plan that promotes equality.

What are some ways that would promote environmental equality for all in future? What lessons should we teach our children relating to privilege, do you think teaching kids young will solve the problem of prejudice?
