Maskarons. Bordeaux has about 3000 maskarons - faces on facades of buildings all over the Old Town. The masks represent either the faces of the owners, their muses or their trade. In one building, a mask of a black woman is on the facade of an apartment previously owned by a slave trader. In the 14th century, slave trading was once Bordeaux' biggest trade with wine trading only second. The city was a transhipment point for the trade. There were no slaves in Bordeaux but to date Bordelais look back on that bit of history with a mixture of sadness and shame. #historyandtravel #history #travel #traveling #wanderer (at Bordeaux, France)

Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada: Banff was first settled with the building of the transcontinental railway in Bow Valley, and was soon settled after workers stumbled along Banff’s widely known hot springs. The name Banff was given to it, as it resembled Banff, Scotland according to George Stephan, the president of the Canadian Pacific Railway at the time. In 1985 it was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations, and in 1976 the International Astronomical Union named a crater on Mars after this very area. It is now one of Canada’s most popular tourist destinations and Home to a wide variety of Canadian wildlife, including two NHL hockey players. | | | Banff is gorgeous and will always hold a special place in my heart!
