Potter Palmer, prominent Chicago businessman, built the original Palmer House in 1871 as a wedding gift to his bride, socialite Bertha Honoré, whom he married the previous year. Unfortunately, the gift was short-lived, as the hotel became a casualty of the Great Chicago Fire a mere 13 days after opening. Palmer would rebuild, and the second Palmer House, designed by John M. Van Osdel, opened in 1873 and was among the most luxurious of its day. It was dubbed "The World's Only Fire Proof Hotel". But more importantly than all that, this is also the location where a certain chocolate treat was created. At the behest of Mrs. Palmer, a cake-like confection smaller than a slice of cake to be served to ladies at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 was concocted. This new confection is what we know now as the brownie. The recipe, consisting of crushed walnuts and apricot glaze, is still use today. After befriending Claude Monet, Mrs. Palmer began decorated the lavish interior with paintings by French impressionists of the time. She accumulated the largest collection of impressionist art outside of France. The hotel also garnet-draped chandeliers, works by Tiffany and a ceiling fresco by French painter, Louis Pierre Rigal, which was described by a columnist as "a wonderful protest of romance against the everydayness of life". By the 1920s, it was decided that a larger facility was needed to accommodate the growing business dustrict. The current Palmer House, designed by the iconic firm of Holabird & Roche, was completed in 1927. It stands 25 stories tall and boasts 1,641 guestrooms, including 177 executive rooms and 53 suites. The 2-story lobby, seen here, is arguably the city's greatest room. The ceiling mural is depiction of Greek mythology.
