I'm a mess and here's why

Of course this just wrecks me. A decade later, this anime still cuts me up. This time tho, it's happy tears that trickle down my face as I ugly cry into my pillow at 4am.

I love the use of silence in this scene so much. CC taking a moment to process what Lelouch just said (as do us, the audience), and everything that he meant behind it, and how she goes through such a myriad of emotions that ultimately ends up with the fulfillment of Lelouch's promise to her -- her true smile.

She almost doesn't believe it. She, who has been alone for centuries that she buried her loneliness in indifference; who drifts from place to place, era to era, people to people with nothing constant in her life; whose sole companion was loneliness itself, has found someone who doesn't want to let her go. It's even more impactful as Lelouch has the choice to stay with Nunally and Suzaku and to be reunited with everyone and live out his life in peace (and anonimity, but with their wealth he can stay at a secluded villa somewhere where they can live peacefully together, and other ways to get around that), but still he chooses CC, chooses a life with her even if it meant they leave everything behind. This moment, without words, is such a nostalgic callback to the time when Lelouch told her she was not alone, to that other time when his geass command to her was to stay by his side, and to his promise to give her her true smile. This final scene was executed so perfectly, from the reminder about Lelouch's poor stamina (lol) to their familiar banter to CC dropping hints of her real feelings to Lelouch taking half of her name, essentially affirming that they are two halves of one. Forever tethered to each other.

So apparently, as soon as Tifa made her first jump in an attempt to get the keycard at Shinra bldg., Cloud will move to follow her every time she makes a jump. Most of us only see when she falls, he's breaking into a frantic run, but evidently he can't help but worry so much even after seeing all the ass she could kick that from the start he was already following to match their distance. 😭😭😭 The writing is so well done.

Cloud caring about what Tifa thinks of him is really adorable and just amusing to watch. The way he says “But Tifa--” has the exact same energy as when he said he wasn’t “like the others” before leaving Nibelheim. He was so much like a kid here bantering with Barret, and still trying to prove something (albeit petty) to Tifa lmao.

when you think about how in the OG, cloud wasn't able to save tifa and himself from falling at mt. nibel, now every time they hang onto / catch each other in the remake just becomes much more meaningful

(I study Mandarin, not Nihonggo but the hanzi/汉字 I can recognize are 唯一 "one and only", 心 "heart", and 支 "support; to prop up". The "sole support of his heart" indeed. 😭😭)

i love how it was established that andrea rhodea's approval is difficult to achieve, thus making the person who becomes subject of his interest quite special. then tifa comes in following cloud to the gym, hanging back as he takes the lead, but andrea immediately notices her and praises her physique, and even extends an invitation to perform together. the raw power of this woman

the embrace between cloud and tifa was done so masterfully. from tifa's opening up, to the emotions in cloud's face as she held on to him, to the urgency plain in his movements when he finally puts his arms around her. for me, the realization that he held on to her so tight that it hurt really drove home the fact that he needed that embrace more than she did. he wasn't even aware of how strongly he held her until she made it known. there's just a lot unpacked in those few seconds. i'm still blown away

after sector 7 fell, and we find that cloud has literally been watching over tifa and waiting for her to wake up (oh this boy), it really makes you think how they ended up separated from barret after their escape in which they all held on to each other. yet another way SE shows us how cloud would always prioritize / stick with tifa regardless of what becomes of barret (oh poor dear bear man). i wonder if this is beginning to be a new trope in this story lmao
