Mannington Hall in Norfolk was built in 1464. The house is a beautiful example of mid-15th century medieval architecture, although the interior was extensively altered during the 19th century. The first house on the site was built before the Norman Conquest, in 1066, after which it was granted by William the Conqueror to William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey. Mannington was recorded as 'Manctura' in the Domesday Book in 1086. In 1291, the house and estate passed to Maude Turrell, the sole heiress of Walter Turrell. Maude was Lord of the Manor in her own right. She later bequeathed Mannington to her second husband, Henry Lumner. He died shortly thereafter, leaving the house and estate to his son and heir William Lumner. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Lumner family rebuilt Mannington Hall in 1464, creating the magnificent moated house that survives today. In 1585, the Lumner family sold Mannington Hall to the Potts family who owned the estate until 1736. Mannington Hall and the nearby village of Itteringham were then sold to Horatio Walpole, 1st Baron Walpole, the younger brother of The Rt Hon. Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford. Horatio had already purchased the neighbouring estate at Wolterton in 1722. Mannington Hall was used mostly as a dower house until 1858 when Horatio Walpole, 4th (8th) Earl of Orford, made it his main residence. Today, 560 years after it was built, Mannington Hall remains a private family residence. It is currently the home of the Dowager Baroness Walpole.

Dec. 11 (UPI) -- The relatives of 10-year-old Sara Sharif were found guilty of her murder, a British court ruled Wednesday.
A British court on Wednesday found her father Urfan Sharif, 43, the girl's stepmother Beinash Batool, 30, and Urfan's brother, Faisal Malik, 29, guilty in the 2023 death of Sara Sharif.
"I know a murder trial is always stressful and traumatic but this case almost above any other has been extremely stressful and traumatic," Judge Justice Cavanagh said at the conviction after the eight-week trial.
Her father was characterized as a "manipulative, serial abuser of vulnerable women" and "abuser of children" for "many years as confirmed in police and social service records." Her death sparked conversations by officials in Britain over its system that prioritizes unification with a parent over the safety of a child with Sara having been placed temporarily in child protective services at birth.
The Crown Prosecution Service stated it was a "complex case" working with foreign authorities but has "today secured justice for Sara."
They initially were charged in September 2023. The court deliberated for roughly two days.
A post-mortem revealed that Sara sustained 71 "multiple and extensive injuries" over her body including burns, bruises and human bite marks along with 25 fractures and 11 to her spine.
It was described to the jury in court how the young girl suffered a torturous "daily living hell" over the course of several months by her father who had been described as a "controlling, violent bully" and psychopath. As the verdict was delivered he reportedly wept and held his head in his hands.
"Her death is a heartbreaking reminder of the profound weaknesses in our child protection system that, as a country, we have failed time and time again to correct," Britain's children's commissioner said Wednesday in a statement. "We have been here before -- and each time we have said 'never again.'"
Sharif, Batool and their five other children along with Sharif's brother Faisal Malik, fled to Pakistan on Aug. 9, 2023 where Urfan then called British emergency services from Pakistan the next day to inform them about Sara which sparked an international manhunt.
They were arrested at London's Gatwick Airport after voluntarily flying home before police discovered Sara's body in a bunk bed on Aug. 10 in the family home in Surrey.
He told police that he beat his daughter "too much" for being "naughty" and left a handwritten confession near where her body was discovered.
"I swear to God that my intention was not to kill her. But I lost it," his note read in part.
However, the ex-taxi driver allegedly lied to the jury over a period of six days and denied the brutal attacks on his daughter.
On the seventh day of the trial Sharif then told the court he took "full responsibility" for Sara's death, and admitted to binding her with packing tape and beating her with a series of objects like a metal pole, a cricket bat or a cell phone. But he did deny biting her and putting her in a homemade hood before burning her with boiling water and an iron.
His partner, Batool, reportedly had refused to provide dental evidence and was uncooperative at trial while Sharif seemingly has an extended history of prior abuse allegations.
More disturbingly, the jury heard evidence of Sharif's previous arrests related to allegations of assault on other children. Reports go as far back as 2007. Sharif also was arrested for the alleged abuse of three Polish women including Sara's mother, Olga Domin. Sharif married Olga in 2009 and got arrested a year later for allegedly assaulting her, which he denied, according to the BBC.
The jury heard how the now-convicted Sharif created a "culture of violent discipline where assaults of Sara had become completely routine, completely normalized." Sara had been "brutally mistreated, abused and violently assaulted" for years, prosecutor William Emlyn Jones told the court.

New JK FLESH and FINAL tracks out now
Justin Broadrick has donated two tracks for a fundraiser to save Bristol's Mickey Zoggs from closure.
"Noods present here a look into the sounds of Surrey Street, friends and family of Zoggs and Noods alike come together in a behemoth compilation touring through the experimental, the bizarre and the danceable to raise money to keep the creative fire burning. Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick presents a track from both the FINAL and JK Flesh projects, Memotone offers a calming respite from the chaos of the world, pure avant-gardist spoken word from Richie Culver, strange electronics from aircode, as well as a slew of talent from many other incredible artists. Mickey Zoggs rose from the ashes of The Surrey Vaults, the home of the first Noods studio — reviving the commitment to supporting underground alternative music without the chaos. Surrey Street has seen the full remit of freaks and weirdos from across the globe declare their musical prowess to the community. However, this is in jeopardy with Mickey Zoggs at risk of development, and by extension, Noods Radio at risk of being unable to continue broadcasting. Lets not let another venue be destroyed at the whim of a failing country — this time calls for extreme music and extreme action. All proceeds will be donated to the cause, to save Mickey Zoggs — Long live Surrey Street, long live Mickey Zoggs. If you feel it, please consider donating what you can to our crowdfunder. —> www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/keep-mickey-zoggs-alive

Ensuring Long-Lasting Roofs: The Importance of Professional Roofing Services
Understanding the Value of a Durable Roof
A strong, well-maintained roof is more than just an essential element of a house—it’s a long-term investment in the safety and comfort of its occupants. The primary function of a roof is to shield the interior of the home from the harsh effects of weather, such as rain, snow, wind, and sunlight. However, many homeowners often overlook the importance of timely maintenance, quality materials, and professional installation. A deteriorating roof can lead to issues like leaks, mould, energy loss, and even structural damage. Thus, ensuring the durability of your roof should never be an afterthought. Professional roofing services play a vital role in maintaining this protection. Choosing to work with experts helps homeowners avoid the costly consequences of poor workmanship and inferior materials. Whether it’s a new build, a replacement project, or regular maintenance, having skilled roofers on board guarantees lasting results that uphold the value and integrity of the property.
Choosing the Right Roofing Materials and Techniques
When it comes to roofing, the choice of materials and techniques significantly influences both the aesthetic appeal and the functional performance of the structure. Roofing professionals understand the importance of selecting materials that are not only visually pleasing but also tailored to withstand specific weather conditions. From asphalt shingles and clay tiles to metal and slate, each material comes with unique advantages and lifespans. Advanced roofing techniques, including proper insulation, waterproofing, and ventilation systems, further enhance a roof’s durability. For homeowners in regions with unpredictable weather, these elements are especially crucial. In areas like Surrey, where damp conditions are common, seeking guidance from a Roofing Company Surrey ensures that the materials and methods used are ideally suited to the local environment. Such companies can provide insight into the most effective combinations of materials and installation techniques to ensure the roof performs well over decades, not just a few years.
The Role of Professional Roofing Specialists
Experience and expertise are indispensable when it comes to roof installation or repair. Professional roofers bring a wealth of knowledge that includes understanding structural integrity, weatherproofing techniques, and safety protocols. Engaging certified Roofing Specialists London ensures the project is executed efficiently and safely, from the initial inspection to the final installation. These specialists are equipped with the right tools and training to handle everything from minor repairs to full-scale replacements. Moreover, they stay updated with the latest building regulations and industry standards, providing peace of mind for homeowners. Their diagnostic skills can identify hidden problems that may not be immediately visible, such as internal water damage or ventilation blockages. By addressing these issues early, roofing specialists prevent more extensive—and expensive—repairs down the road. Ultimately, their professionalism translates into enhanced longevity, energy efficiency, and increased property value, which are vital for every responsible homeowner.
Maintenance and Long-Term Protection
One of the most overlooked aspects of roofing is ongoing maintenance. Even the highest quality roofs require periodic checks and timely repairs to maintain their effectiveness. Regular inspections can detect issues like cracked shingles, blocked gutters, or worn-out flashing, which can be quickly resolved to prevent more severe problems. Homeowners should schedule annual inspections, particularly after harsh weather seasons, to ensure that minor damages don’t develop into significant structural concerns. Preventative maintenance, such as cleaning moss or resealing vulnerable areas, extends the roof's lifespan and minimizes unexpected costs. Furthermore, many professional roofing companies offer maintenance packages, allowing homeowners to establish a consistent upkeep routine. This approach is far more cost-effective than waiting for a crisis to trigger a major repair. Investing in long-term protection not only safeguards the physical structure of the home but also contributes to the health and well-being of those living inside, by ensuring optimal indoor air quality and temperature regulation.
Conclusion: Partnering with Trusted Roofing Experts
Choosing the right roofing partner is crucial for achieving lasting results and peace of mind. Professional roofing services ensure that every detail—from material selection to finishing touches—is handled with precision and care. Homeowners who invest in expert roofing solutions benefit from safer homes, improved energy efficiency, and greater property value. Whether it’s a minor repair or a complete overhaul, trusting qualified professionals with your roofing needs guarantees a smooth, stress-free experience. For those seeking reliable services in and around the London and Surrey areas, it’s essential to select a provider with a proven track record of excellence. One such trusted provider is citybuildingandroofing.co.uk, offering comprehensive roofing solutions backed by experience and customer satisfaction. With the right team by your side, you can ensure your home is protected, efficient, and visually appealing for years to come.

BC Flood Claims in 2024-2025
British Columbia has faced unprecedented flooding challenges in 2024, making flood insurance more critical than ever for property owners across the province. As we move into 2025, significant changes to flood coverage and claim processes are reshaping how BC residents protect themselves against water damage.
The October 2024 Atmospheric River: A Wake-Up Call
In October 2024, an intense atmospheric river struck BC's coast, resulting in more than $110 million in insured damage claims. The Category 4 atmospheric river brought devastating rainfall to Metro Vancouver properties in Burnaby, Coquitlam, North Vancouver, Surrey, and West Vancouver between October 18-20. Burke Mountain in Coquitlam recorded 256 mm (10.1 in) of rainfall, while Kennedy Lake on Vancouver Island saw over 318 mm (12.5 in).
This event serves as a stark reminder that BC's flood risks are intensifying. While the damage was significant, it pales in comparison to the devastating November 2021 atmospheric river that caused an estimated $450 million in insured losses—at the time, the costliest disaster in BC history.
Remarkably, ICBC received only 80 claims for water-damaged vehicles in 2024, far lower than the 2,100 claims following the 2021 event, suggesting either improved preparedness or different flood patterns affecting vehicle exposure.
Record-Breaking Year for Canadian Weather Claims
The October flooding was part of a catastrophic year for weather-related insurance claims across Canada. For the first time in Canadian history, insured damage from severe weather events surpassed $8 billion in 2024, shattering the previous record of $6 billion from 2016. This figure represents nearly triple the total recorded in 2023.
The summer of 2024 alone saw 228,000 insurance claims—a 406% increase compared to the 20-year average. For BC property owners, this translates to increased pressure on insurance premiums and potential changes in coverage availability.
Current State of BC Flood Insurance Coverage
Despite recent flooding events, flood insurance remains challenging to obtain and often inadequate for many BC residents. About 10% of Canadian households cannot access flood insurance, forcing them to rely on government disaster assistance programs that provide limited financial protection.
The story of Pam Velt from the Nicola Valley illustrates this coverage gap perfectly. After the November 2021 floods destroyed her $414,000 home, she received only $30,000 from her overland flood insurance—despite believing she was fully covered. Her policy showed $674,050 in total property coverage, but flood protection was limited to just $30,000.
This stark reality affects thousands of BC residents who may discover their flood coverage is insufficient only after disaster strikes. Many policies include flood insurance as an optional add-on with relatively low coverage limits, creating dangerous gaps in protection.
BC's Strategic Response: The 2024 Flood Strategy
Recognizing the escalating flood risks, the BC government launched the comprehensive BC Flood Strategy in March 2024. This strategy represents the province's most extensive response to flood threats, addressing risk management holistically through improved land-use planning, enhanced flood defense infrastructure, and better utilization of natural environments to protect communities.
BC Housing has also initiated the "Mobilizing Building Adaptation and Resilience" program, designed to help homeowners protect their properties from climate change risks. These initiatives acknowledge that traditional approaches to flood management are insufficient given the increasing frequency and intensity of atmospheric rivers affecting the province.
Game-Changing Development: National Flood Insurance Program
The most significant development for BC flood victims is the forthcoming National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The federal government committed to launching this program in 2025, providing over 1.5 million high-risk Canadian homeowners access to affordable flood insurance.
This public-private partnership between the federal government and property and casualty insurers will make flood coverage available seamlessly through existing home insurance policies, offered by the same brokers and agents homeowners work with today. The program specifically targets households at high risk of flooding who currently lack adequate coverage options.
For BC residents, this represents a potential solution to the coverage gaps that have left many underinsured or uninsured against flood risks. The federal government is targeting an April 1, 2025 rollout for this new flood coverage program for all Canadian homeowners.
Insurance Industry Pressures and Premium Increases
The escalating costs of flood claims are driving significant changes across the insurance industry. Home and mortgage insurance rates have climbed nearly 350% over the past two decades, outpacing every other shelter-related cost. Saskatchewan and Alberta have seen the steepest increases this decade, at 106% and 90% respectively.
Even more concerning, some insurers are retreating from high-risk areas. Aviva Canada announced it would phase out its direct-to-consumer home insurance business in Alberta, while Desjardins has stopped providing new mortgages for properties in certain flood-prone areas.
Practical Steps for BC Property Owners
Given these developments, BC property owners should take immediate action:
Review Your Current Coverage: Examine your policy's flood coverage limits. Many policies include minimal flood protection that may prove inadequate during major events.
Monitor Weather Warnings: The BC River Forecast Centre issues three levels of warnings: High Streamflow Advisory, Flood Watch, and Flood Warning. Understanding these alerts can help you prepare for potential flooding.
Document Everything: In the event of flood damage, comprehensive documentation is crucial for successful claims. Photograph all damage and maintain detailed inventories of affected possessions.
Prepare for 2025 Changes: Stay informed about the National Flood Insurance Program launch and how it might affect your coverage options and costs.
Consider Professional Help: Given the complexity of flood claims and potential coverage gaps, consulting with a public adjuster experienced in flood damage can help ensure you receive fair compensation.

Property owners who stay informed and proactive about their flood coverage will be better positioned to weather the storms ahead—both literally and financially. The October 2024 flooding serves as a timely reminder that adequate flood protection isn't just advisable in BC—it's essential.

Why Concrete Repair Is A Wise Investment For Your Surrey Property
Concrete is one of the longest-lasting, most popular materials for Surrey buildings, driveways, walkways, and patios. Concrete provides strength, stability, and a great appearance when well-maintained. Yet, as time passes, wear and tear, weather fluctuations, and use can lead to cracks, damage, and deterioration. Concrete repair comes in here—an investment that does not merely restore your property's appearance but also yields long-lasting advantages.
Increase Property Value Perhaps the most compelling reason to invest in concrete repair services is that, where this is possible, it can add value to your property. A broken driveway or a lopsided patio exudes an unkempt air that intimidates and detracts from curb appeal. If you are trying to sell your home, this can be a major turn-off for potential buyers. On the other hand, investing in concrete repair shows that you appreciate maintaining your property well and are ready to pay for its long-term health. A well-maintained concrete surface makes your property look more inviting, clean, and neat, something buyers will appreciate when selling it.
Prevent Further Damage Concrete damage, if left unattended, will continue to worsen over time. Small cracks in your driveway can turn into large cracks, resulting in more critical structural problems. The cost of repairing larger issues in the future is typically far higher than fixing the problem now. Concrete repair stops damage from spreading before it's too late, saving you money in the long term. For example, filling cracks early can prevent water from penetrating and causing even more damage in cold winter days when water freezes. Fixing small issues today saves you big repair bills tomorrow.
Improve Safety A cracked or chipped concrete floor is a hazard for those walking on it. Sloping sidewalks or driveways lead to tripping and falling, especially in big households or properties with a lot of traffic.
Improve Aesthetic Appeal Not only does concrete repair restore functionality but also aesthetics. Over time, concrete can get stained, crack, or turn colour, making your property look outdated. By repairing such issues, you can reinstate the initial charm of your concrete surfaces. Well-maintained concrete can look fresh out of the factory, whether it is a sidewalk, patio, or driveway. You can even choose decorative finishes or resurfacing techniques that enhance the appearance of your property and increase its functionality.
Save Money in the Long Run Although it may seem like a huge upfront cost, concrete repair saves you money. As mentioned above, small repairs now prevent big problems later. By repairing issues before they happen, you don't pay the cost of more extensive repairs or replacements. Besides, well-maintained concrete lasts longer, so less repair is needed ultimately. The repair cost of concrete is less than the cost of replacing large areas of concrete or addressing water damage or structural failure due to neglect.Increase Energy Efficiency Fixed concrete also helps to control temperatures within your home or company. For example, sealed and well-maintained concrete driveways or patios minimize the impact of weather conditions, keeping outdoor spaces in a better state for longer. Poorly sealed or damaged concrete leads to water seepage, making outdoor spaces less comfortable and potentially destroying your landscaping

Smart Downsizing Solution: Multi-Purpose Timber Building Maximises Space in Guildford

When life changes, your property needs should evolve too. When they downsized from their family home to an adorable two-bedroom cottage in Guildford, a Surrey couple found out that they needed more room.
The Challenge: Making Small Spaces Work Harder.
After their kids grew up and moved out, this couple down-scaled into a cottage that better suited their lifestyle. But there was a major snag – I storage space shrank dramatically, and I had no desk, said our customer.
With the lack of space becoming an issue, they found that a timber building from Passmores that would meet their needs instead of accepting a compromise.
The Solution: A Multi-Functional Masterpiece.
We collaborated with our design team to develop a custom timber structure to help solve their lack of space. The custom build features.
Garage designed to accommodate a vehicle.
The building includes storage space attached to it.
A studio space that was converted was turned into a home garage workshop by the owners.
Design Excellence That Stands the Test of Time.
Over ten years ago a Passmores installation was fitted in Guildford that has stood the test of time. The building has period wooden windows (today we usually use customised PVC windows for better performance) and a natural slate roof that fits in with the existing cottage architecture.
The design was not only clever but also sensitive as it adhered to the strict council standards. Timber building by our team was ensured to harmonise the surrounding and be regulatory compliant.

Customisation Beyond Expectations.
Choose Passmores and the possibilities are endless, says this project. While we did the structural installation and roof installation, the clients did the interior transformation for the wooden flooring, insulation, decoration, etc. which made the entire structure reflect their taste and personality.
The result? A beautiful timber building that blends vehicle storage, workshop space, and flexible living space – just because you’re downsizing it doesn’t mean you can’t have all the mod cons!
Your Space, Your Vision.
Whatever your reason for wanting an extension, whether like this Guildford couple you are going through a lifestyle change or simply want to make more of your property, Passmores can help you realise your dream. Professional Solutions from Your Trusted Steel Beams And Wall Removal Specialist
Thinking of knocking down a wall to open up your living space? Whether you’re aiming for an open-plan kitchen, a wider lounge, or a seamless kitchen-diner, structural alterations can transform how your home looks and feels. But they also come with big responsibilities—and that's where a certified Steel Beams And Wall Removal Specialist becomes essential.
Why You Need a Steel Beams And Wall Removal Specialist
Many UK homes were built with boxy layouts and load-bearing walls. To create that sleek, modern, open-concept design, these walls often need to be removed. However, doing so without proper structural support can lead to major safety risks.
A qualified Steel Beams And Wall Removal Specialist ensures:
The correct type and size of steel beam (RSJ) is selected
All structural calculations are accurate
Building control approval is obtained
The beam is safely installed with minimum disruption
This is not a job for general builders without structural experience. Mistakes can result in ceiling sagging, cracked walls—or worse.
When Do You Need Steel Beam Installation?
Knocking through kitchens and living rooms for open-plan layouts
Chimney breast removals that affect supporting walls

A father accused of murdering his daughter in a “campaign of abuse” told police he “legally punished her and she died”, a court heard.
Sara Sharif, 10, was discovered lying in her bed at her home in Woking, Surrey, with dozens of injuries including burns, broken bones and extensive bruising on Aug 10 last year.
Her father Urfan Sharif, 42, stepmother, Beinash Batool, 30, and uncle, Faisal Malik, 28, appeared for trial at the Old Bailey on Monday accused of her murder.
The court heard that Sara suffered “appalling and brutal” abuse “for weeks and weeks” before her death.
Opening the case, William Emlyn Jones KC, said it was “inconceivable” that only one of the defendants could have carried out the “campaign of abuse” without the “complicity, participation, assistance and encouragement of others”.
He said that the three accused were all “pointing the finger at each other” and refusing to take responsibility for Sara’s death.
Ms Batool will claim that her husband was a “violent disciplinarian” while Mr Sharif will claim Sara was primarily looked after by his wife, the court heard.
All three defendants have pleaded not guilty to her murder and to causing or allowing the death of a child between Dec 16 2022 and August 9 2023.
The court heard that in the early hours of Aug 10 last year, an eight-and-a-half-minute long phone call was made by Mr Sharif to police in the UK.
The operator initially struggled to hear Mr Sharif, who appeared to be emotional, Mr Emlyn Jones KC, said.
“[They] interrupted and said ‘take a deep breath and tell me what’s happened’. 999 operators are used to hearing all kinds of dreadful things, but this one cannot have expected the answer he got to that question.”
The court heard that Mr Sharif, a taxi driver, told the operator “I’ve killed my daughter” before adding “I legally punished her and she died”.
When pressed for more details, he replied: “She was naughty”, and then “I beat her up, it wasn’t my intention to kill her, but I beat her up too much”, the court heard.
In the call, he is heard begging the police to go to his home “because his daughter is alone”.
At the home address on Hammond Road, in an upstairs bedroom, on the bottom bunk, police found Sara “as if asleep”.
“But she was not asleep,” Mr Emlyn Jones said, “She was dead. Her name was Sara Sharif, and she had been just 10 years old when she was killed.”
The court heard that next to her body was a note ‘in Urfan Sharif’s handwriting’, which read: “It’s me Urfan Sharif who killed my daughter by beating”, and “I swear to God that my intention was not to kill her. But I lost it”.
The note also said: “I am running away because I am scared.”
Mr Emlyn Jones said: “It was certainly true that he ran away… In fact the whole family ran they fled to Pakistan, flying out on August 9 and landing on August 10.”
Sharif had not called the police until he was “thousands of miles away”, the prosecutor added.
He told the jurors that throughout the trial, they would hear evidence from Sara’s school and neighbours.
He said that Sara had been withdrawn from her school to be home-schooled a few months before she died.
The prosecutor added that evidence from text messages and neighbours would give a “snapshot of what life in that house was like”.
Mr Emlyn Jones said that Sharif’s claim that he “beat up” his daughter “came nowhere near to describing the extent of the violence and the physical abuse Sara suffered”.
He told the court that the schoolgirl had “been the victim of assault and physical abuse for weeks and weeks at least”.
Doctors found “dozens of separate injuries” both “externally and internally”. She had suffered extensive bruising, burns and broken bones.
“So no, Sara had not just been beaten up. Her treatment, certainly in the last few weeks of her life, had been appalling; it had been brutal.”
He added: “At the heart of this case lies a simple but depressing truth. A 10-year-old girl was found dead in her home; examination of her body shows that she had been subjected to repeated serious violence over a significant period of time.”
Mr Emlyn Jones said all three defendants had been charged with murder because it was “inconceivable” the others would not have known.
He continued: “It is inconceivable that one of the adults alone, or two of them, could have carried out what amounts to a campaign of abuse without the complicity, participation, assistance and encouragement of the others.
“None of them ever reported Sara’s abuse to any outside agency, who could have intervened; Sara’s medical records tell us that none of the injuries she received was ever reported, or shown to a doctor, or to staff at her school; no outside help was called.
“None of the defendants did anything to prevent what was happening to Sara, as they surely would have done if they had not been complicit in what was happening. The prosecution case is that they are all responsible for her death, and they are all guilty of her murder.”
‘Serious and repeated violence’
The court heard that “all of the defendants accept that Sara had suffered serious and repeated violence within the family home”.
However, Mr Emlyn Jones said: “Each of them denies that they were the one responsible for any of that violence and abuse.
“Each of them seeks to deflect the blame onto one or both of the others, to shift responsibility away from themselves, onto someone else.”
Mr Sharif, the court heard, would seek to claim that he was not responsible for the violence, as he was often out working.
He said Sara was primarily looked after by his wife, Ms Batool.
He claimed that his apparent confessions in the note and the video call were false and he had only made them to protect his partner.
Ms Batool blamed Sara’s death on Sharif who she described as a “violent disciplinarian” who regularly assaulted his daughter.
She will argue that although she knew what was happening she was too fearful of her husband to intervene.
Malik claims that he was unaware of any of the abuse being perpetrated against Sara.
Mr Emlyn Jones said the case was bound to generate “strong emotions; distress, disgust, great sadness and doubtless even anger.”
The trial, set to last for nine weeks, continues.

Loft Conversion: Unlock the Hidden Potential of Your Property with Build Abode

The most effective solution to create additional space, improve property value, and maximize the use of your current home footprint without having to relocate is a Loft Conversion. Build Abode can assist you in designing and providing great loft conversions in Surrey, Berkshire, and the vicinity, converting underutilized attic space into pleasant and stunning living spaces.
No matter if you dream of a spare room, study, or peaceful retreat, a loft conversion might be the answer.
What is a Loft Conversion?
A loft conversion is merely a procedure whereby you convert an unused attic space into a functional room. If planned and designed in the right manner, your loft can then become:
A master bedroom with en-suite
A study or creative studio
A guest bedroom or playroom
A hobby room or reading corner
We provide a complete design-and-build loft conversion service at Build Abode, from planning permission and structural surveys all the way down to construction and finish.
Types of Loft Conversions
There are a number of different types of loft conversions, and the most suitable one will be determined by your structure of house, space available, and your own requirements:
Dormer Loft Conversion This is the most popular of the choices, which consists of building a box-like extension off the roof line. It has vertical walls and a flat roof, significantly adding headroom and living space.
Velux (Rooflight) Loft Conversion Best suited for lofts with good original height, Velux conversions consist of fitting roof windows without any change to the roof structure. It's an inexpensive and less invasive option.
Hip-to-Gable Conversion Generally appropriate for end-terrace or semi-detached houses, this conversion brings the roof slope into a vertical wall to create additional internal space.
Mansard Loft Conversion A more extreme solution, the mansard changes the roof slope entirely to produce a near-vertical wall. Although it will probably need planning permission, it produces the maximum amount of space and design freedom.
Build Abode can help identify your loft space and recommend the most suitable type of conversion, considering structural feasibility, looks, and budget.
Why Have a Loft Conversion?
There are many reasons why homeowners choose loft conversions:
Additional living space without enlarging your house footprint.
Increased Property Value – a loft conversion can add up to 20% to your home's resale value.
Avoid Moving Costs – no need to pay for stamp duty, agent fees, or relocation stress.
Tailored to Your Needs – create a custom space that suits your lifestyle.
At Build Abode, we’ve helped countless homeowners transform underused lofts into vibrant, functional rooms tailored exactly to their family’s needs.
The Loft Conversion Process with Build Abode
We ensure the loft conversion process becomes simple for you to be stress-free. Below is what you can expect once you engage Build Abode:
Initial Consultation We will pay a visit to your home, inspect your loft area, and understand your plans. We will explain the possibility and give you a no-obligation quotation.
Design & Planning Our own designers and architects will develop plans in depth to make your space work as efficiently as possible. We put forward planning applications or permitted development documents on your behalf.
Building Our professional staff will begin construction with minimum interference in your daily routine. We have clean working environments and strict health and safety practices.
Finishing Touches After the building is finished, we fit flooring, lighting, insulation, and any of the features you've asked for to give the room a high-quality finish.
Cost of a Loft Conversion
The price of a loft conversion depends on size, complexity, and materials. The average prices begin at £35,000 for a Velux conversion, while dormer and mansard conversions cost between £45,000 and £70,000+.
At Build Abode, we take pride in providing clear, itemized quotations with no hidden costs. We aim to deliver value for money with high levels of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Planning Permission and Building Regulations
Not every loft conversion will need planning permission. The majority are under permitted development rights, particularly where they do not extend the roofline significantly. However, all conversions will need to meet building regulations, including fire safety, insulation, and structural integrity.
All of this is handled by Build Abode, who will handle everything from planning and regulation through to the completion of your project.
Begin Your Loft Conversion Today with Build Abode
Loft conversion is not just an additional bedroom — it's an investment in your way of life and the future resale value of your home. Build Abode's committed to assisting homeowners get the most out of their living space with design thinking, flawless craftsmanship, and a customer-focused approach.
