Press kit issued by U.S. record label Homestead Records for Brave Words, the 1987/1988 debut album by New Zealand band The Chills.

It would take me another year or so after the U.S. release of this album for me to discover The Chills, via the magical In Love With These Times Flying Nun label comp, a foundational influence on my musical taste. But after scoring this used copy of Brave Words at my local record store circa 1990 and pulling the record out of the sleeve... out popped this press kit.

The press release itself is by then-Homestead employee Gerard Cosloy, who was an early champion of music on Flying Nun (”one of the planet’s only record labels that doesn’t rot”). His genuine enthusiasm for The Chills is flecked with bits of curmudgeonliness he honed in his 80s zine, Conflict.

“Just read the press kit and leave me alone?” Okay! The press clippings in here, reviews of the album (released in 1987 outside the U.S.) and recent concerts, provide a good snapshot of a band on the rise. A Bucketfull of Brains reviewer said The Chills put on the “best gig I’ve seen in a long, long while,” while an uncredited review of Brave Words ends by calling the album “a classic.” Who am I to disagree?

Flyer for Homestead Records’ New Music Seminar showcase at CBCG in New York City on June 17, 1992.

There’s nothing like a big music industry event to bring out the stacked bills of indie bands all over the map—both musically and literally. And this bill was no exception to that rule, with Brit jangle (The Dentists), cool American rock (Love Child) and melodic noise pop and guitar grind from New Zealand (The Cakekitchen, The Mad Scene) sharing the stage as part of the showcase that American indie label Homestead Records put on that year for the New Music Seminar. While I’d actually attended the conference as a registered attendee two years before, this time I was just there for the music, man.

I wish I could remember all the bands that I managed to catch on this bill. But the haze of time has dulled my recollection. Besides the string of multiple amazing shows in the span of a week almost guaranteed there would be two or three things happening at the same that you wanted to attend. Concert-hopping was de rigeur.

The one band on this bill I can say for sure that I saw was The Cakekitchen. And that’s only because I have the tape recording I made of it as proof! In fact, I originally dug out this flyer as I was digitizing that live recording among some of my others from that era.

Turns out I needn’t have bothered. A German label released what is presumably the band’s own recording of that show on CD in 2005.
