Delhi: 34-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh arrested for cyber fraud | Delhi News - Net4News

NEW DELHI: A 34-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh was arrested for allegedly duping people on the pretext of buying furniture from them through an online goods exchange platform and later getting money deducted from their bank accounts using fraudulent ways, police said on Tuesday. Accused Pankaj Verma, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh, used to call sellers on OLX to purchase their products and upon finalisation of a deal, he sent them malicious links on their numbers that resulted in deduction of money from their Paytm-linked accounts, they said. The matter came to light in November 2019 after a complaint was received at Keshav Puram police station from Mayank Sinha who alleged that his colleague Rajiv Bodwade wanted to sell his furniture and posted an advertisement on OLX, police said. In his complaint, Sinha alleged that his colleague received a call based on the advertisement from an unknown person who showed interest in buying the furniture and sent a link on Whatsapp for online payment. As Bodwade did not have a Paytm account, Sinha clicked on the link through his Paytm account, due to which Rs 19,358 got deducted from his SBI bank account which was linked to Paytm. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Usha Rangnani said that during the course of investigation through specific cyber analysis and local intelligence, the user of the alleged mobile number, Pankaj Verma was apprehended from his hometown in Aligarh, UP. On his inputs, a USB pen drive was recovered from him in which 50 fake Aadhar cards were found. All these Aadhar cards had different names and addresses but photographs on all cards were of Verma, she said. The police have recovered 52 fake SIM cards from his possession and found out that he was using 15 fake Paytm accounts simultaneously on his mobile phone. Investigations revealed that Verma worked as a sales representative in a telecom company from 2008 to 2017, where he learnt about how to activate new SIM cards. Thereafter, he opened a centre to make documents such as Aadhar cards, PAN cards, Voter ID cards, community certificates and other certificates, the officer said. "In the process, he used to make extra copies of the documents which were submitted by the customers and made more than 500 fake Aadhar cards so as to get SIM cards to hide his identity. He also got flexi SIMs (used for activation of new SIM). He also used to sell fake SIMs to other cheaters in West Bengal and Mewat area," she said. Verma admitted his involvement in the case and has been arrested, police said, adding efforts are in progress to trace his involvement in other cases also. Source link Read the full article

Delhiwale: A Ghalib lover’s life and his unnoticed farewell

Going back to his early days, Mr Waseem recalled: “I gave up my working life about a decade ago after which I decided to spend the rest of my life reading.”

At some point, Mr Waseem was a furniture polisher and an “all-round painter” in Mumbai. He also briefly lived in Dubai. But it was Delhi he headed to after leaving his hometown Kanpur decades ago.

“I must have been 20 then. I’m sure my brothers must still be living in Kanpur but I haven’t had any contact with them for a very long time. I like living alone.”

Mr Waseem never married. “I never had mohabbat (romance) with anyone… Sometimes, I think I could have experienced at least one relationship but I’m a traveller unable to set roots anywhere.”

Before his eyesight dimmed a few years ago, Mr Waseem would re-read his favourite novelists — Premchand, Krishan Chander, Khwaja Ahmad Abbas and Diptee Nazir Ahmad Dehlvi. “These writers had a style that brought me closer to the realities of our world.” The Ghalib Academy often hosts poetry mushairas in its large auditorium in the evenings. It’s rarely a full house, but we always spotted Mr Waseem in a seat at the back. Sometimes, he would be dozing.

In the evening, he would kill the hours sitting by a pavement tea stall just outside the Ghalib Academy. “It was there that he passed away one evening while having chai… his head just fell to one side,” the bookstall man told us. Mr Waseem’s relatives from Kanpur attended his burial, he added.

While talking to us, Mr Waseem had also said: “I have no pain, no suitcases and no burdens. My end depends on the will of God. Until then I will continue to be in this library.”

Partition of India: Objects that tell the story of history’s largest mass migration

(CNN)This month marks 70 years since the Partition of India, a momentous event now receding from view. In many Indian and Pakistani families like mine, "Partition" has become a word unspoken, shrouded in silence and sheathed with painful memories.

Generations have grown up in the shadow of the monumental displacement that changed the face of the subcontinent, even if it is present in their own families' stories. So, in 2013, I began a quest to uncover the everyday items that traveled with refugees in both directions -- and the powerful stories behind each one.

A personal connection

Having settled in Delhi, the families of all four of my grandparents can be traced to a land that now lies across the border. They originally hailed from places as far away as Dera Ismail Khan and Lahore, both in modern-day Pakistan.

Yet growing up, the word "Partition" was all but absent from my vocabulary. At least, it was until I encountered objects that had once belonged to my ancestors in an undivided India -- a pocketknife, a yardstick, a ghara (a type of metallic vessel), a peacock-shaped bracelet and a set of kitchen utensils.

These were the possessions that accompanied my great-grandparents as they fled their homes during the Partition in 1947. Through them, I learned of my own family's migration and life before the divide.

Being introduced to these mundane items made me realize the way in which objects can retain memories. Upon touching their old possessions, my grandparents -- and many others I have interviewed since -- drifted back to the time when they were in everyday use.

What I witnessed was how the physicality -- the texture, scent and surface -- of an object preserved and invoked memories from one of Indian subcontinent's most catastrophic events. Witnessing this, I asked myself: Could objects embody stories of family and friendship, harmony and violence, opulence and poverty? Could they be the only physical traces of life across an uncrossable border between the present and past?

Uncovering forgotten stories

Once an idea takes root in one's mind, it becomes difficult to retract. Soon I found myself visiting people who had crossed the border during Partition, and looking at the items that had gone with them.

This led me on my own journey. From my hometown, Delhi, I traveled to the crumbling city of Calcutta, the lush plains of Punjab, across the border into Lahore and, finally, to England.

Over a period of four years, I have unearthed objects that are precious, treasured and cared for. I also encountered objects that had been locked away behind glass in cupboards and vitrines, and items so mundane that had been ignored and forgotten, despite their age, beauty and serendipitous survival.

Among them are a string of exquisite Basra pearls and matching earrings owned by Azra Haq. In her early 20s at the time of the Partition, Haq was recovering from typhoid in Dalhousie when her family left in haste. They made their way through the mountainous terrain of Murree and finally settled in Lahore.

The family took few belongings with them. And much of what they had, like furniture and Persian rugs, was thrown from the truck to make space for stranded Muslims they encountered along the way. But Haq quietly tied the pearls and earrings within the folds of her baby-blue salwar kameez.

Decades later, she still holds them close to her heart as reminders of a life of opulence and grandeur she had once lived. Her English upbringing and middle-class life of garden parties were reduced to penury after the divide.

Painful memories, difficult journeys

For other migrants, like Sat Pal Kohli, the remnants of separation conjure even more troubling memories.

Born in Lahore in 1926 to a female moneylender, Kohli's house was one of ten Hindu homes in the predominantly Muslim neighborhood of Garhi Shahu. Due to the nature of his mother's work, the house was always filled with rings, bracelets and other precious itemsbelonging to those unable to repay their debts.

As Partition riots broke out, the family was one of the first in the area to be targeted.

Speaking to me years later, Kohli recalled his mother scrambling around the house, packing bags and instructing him to find mortgaged items that were both precious and discreet enough to be hidden. Many of the items that accompanied Kohli and his mother to their adopted city of Delhi -- among them a silver soap dish and a cigarette case -- never belonged to them in the first place.

Experiences of civil unrest also linger in the memory of Partha Mitter, a Calcutta-born professor now living in the UK. Sitting with me in his Oxford home, he unwrapped a pile of books and handed me the oldest codex: "The Book of Everlasting Things."

Mitter described how a mob of men entered his family's home during the Great Calcutta Killings of 1946 -- a day of rioting and violence between Hindus and Muslims. The men made their way through the mansion, destroying whatever they could find.

This includedhis father's grand library. And when the intruders couldn't destroy the books fast enough, they filled the bathtubs with water and dumped them in, causing most to disintegrate into pulp.

After the mob left, the family collected what remained of their lives, including "The Book of Everlasting Things." Disfigured with water lines and tears, its every word is as readable as before. But for Mitter, it is forever imbued with the violence it witnessed.

A window to the past

The narratives bound within these objects, and many others, shine a light on incredible migratory journeys. Aside from the individuals themselves, they are also the only physical traces of a life before the divide.

The quantity and value of possessions that refugees could carry with them were often determined by the kind of life they had led, providing insight into the material culture of the time.

But memories of Partition are also especially pliable. Within them, the act of forgetting, either inevitably or purposefully, seems to play as much a part as remembering itself.

Pia Riverola’s Passion for Photography Has Taken Her Around the World

Some of us know exactly what it is we want to do when we grow up and others walk along until they come upon it. Pia Riverola, who rose to global acclaim in recent years thanks to her talents and good eye, was always interested in photography but didn’t discover her real passion for it until she left her hometown, Barcelona, for Mexico City.

“When I moved, I started to capture things very spontaneously. Everything felt really new and exciting,” she said. “Mexico’s bright colors were everywhere and there are beautiful desert and lush landscapes. The new architectural styles that I had not seen before were especially a main source of my inspiration, and helped to shape what my work would become in the following years.”

Pia now splits her time between Mexico City and Los Angeles, and says each place and its personality have transformed her understanding of both detail and color. Recently, we had the chance to speak with her about her career, her diverse photography styles, and how launching her website through Squarespace helped make her professional dream a reality.

Travel has played a huge part in fueling and shaping Pia’s art:

“Once I got used to taking photos, I inevitably wanted to travel to see more places and capture more moments,” she explained. “That led to sharing my photos on the internet, mainly to be in touch with my friends and family back in Barcelona, and also very organically some magazines and brands got interested in my work. They started featuring it or commissioning projects for me to shoot.”

Her photography styles similarly evolved as others started taking notice, weaving in between the worlds of fashion, still life, landscape, and architectural photography.

While living in Barcelona, Pia studied film and took a few photography classes in the process. She credits this time in her life with discovering a new language that would allow her to communicate in her own way, using photography to share her individual point of view. After that, a move to New York for a year gave her the opportunity to take her studies further and focus on documentary film at SVA.

Pia continued to branch out with her talent, eventually building up her portfolio to include a number of genres that made her photography style even more appealing to potential customers.

“Architecture and documentary came first while traveling, then I introduced more personal portraits and started playing around with still-life and set designers. Fashion came along very organically, and was the last since it involves more people for a project. I enjoy being able to adapt my vision and taste to different genres, I become less excited when I have to shoot the same thing over and over. Photography is my job, but it’s also become my way of living and getting to know what surrounds me. It’s exciting being able to learn about it all,” Pia opened up to us.

When she’s not on assignment, colors, textures, and light moments are what most draw her attention most. Pia also shared a few tips for capturing the personality of a location when traveling.

“I try to get to know local people who can take me around, show me their point of view or the things that they enjoy in their city or town. I’ll always try to be outside during sunrise or sunset. I love chasing the first and last light of the day, especially if I’m somewhere new. I also pay attention to everyday things, I’m always looking around.”

Other times, inspiration is literally right in front of you. In this case, a window in Pia’s home. “I’m unsure why, but I find myself taking the same photo from this window in my room at different times of day, on different days, during different sunsets or sunrises,” she shared. “I have a collection of these images and I find a lot of pleasure in them, even though it’s something I see often. I’m guessing it’s because I travel so much for work that I get excited to be home, and still find beauty in it even if it’s not exciting.”

Pia’s client list today is extensive and impressive – Nike, Wall Street Journal, and Soho House grace it among many others. But names aside, every photographer has a favorite project.

Pia let us in on hers, “I loved working on the campaign with VIDIVIXI in Mexico City. It was really special to help create the mood, lighting, and the specific setting that we wanted the furniture to live in. It ended up feeling dreamy and almost from another time, like if you were in a movie.”

After drawing from the places she’s visited across the globe for inspiration, creating an incredible photography portfolio site was the next step and the perfect place to showcase all of her work.

“It was really incredible when I finalized my website and was able to share my work living in a beautiful space,” she said. “It made it feel very real and allowed me to show my work and my world to everyone.”

<p>A survival Manual for startups: Tiny entrepreneurs Must forget 'TINA' and Adopt dignity</p>

Saddam is a young entrepreneur who runs a sportswear unit in Deoria. Though his market chain is in this Uttar Pradesh town, he lacks market relationships and the capital every month, to ensure normal returns. He's started a cyber cafe with a friend, a second enterprise, to hedge his risks. He has a family to support, for example parents, but he doesn't have a livelihood that can meet his or his family's needs. Saddam tried the seasonality of orders a furniture enterprise but payments by customers and the high cost of investment in the goods forced it to shut.

All these enterprises have stayed in the official definition of micro-enterprises rather than formalised or grown into registered companies over two years. Saddam is a graduate and had a contract job in Gujarat but it never paid enough to make it worth his while to migrate from his hometown.

In India, there are numerous such entrepreneurs as Saddam who run insecure enterprises on the belief that 'There Is No Alternative' or 'TINA' (to borrow a term used for electoral contests in India) where only the employable get jobs and others are forced to set up ventures to survive.

As India holds its first Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) 2017 in November, it must not forget entrepreneurs like Saddam thrive only in smallish towns that lead around 50 percent to India's GDP. Most of these entrepreneurs are in informal sector or India "unincorporated" that isn't on the radar of major market players and access to them, as is evident in Saddam's case, is an arduous task.

If we still have to construct our nation by setting up ventures, as the PM has repeatedly emphasised, we have to set up the grid for all the needed services and run it together with "Middle India".

Dignified and viable relationships with entrepreneurs in cities and metros -- for financial and market access efficiency and innovation -- has to become part of the ecosystem for formalising the informal sector and sustainable job creation. A 2016 report by the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth puts Middle India at around 200 districts with 164 million households, i.e., 60 percent of all households, mostly rural, at an average yearly income of approximately Rs 1,50,000. In areas like Deoria, the income is a lot lower.

The numbers are stark: less than 13 percent households have got loan despite access to bank accounts has been made widespread under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana; 80 percent are self explanatory but vulnerable to enterprise tremors so have to resort to casual labor to make ends meet. The prospects for their advancement are precarious as 17 percent are graduates and being a graduate isn't a guarantee for getting job, as has occurred with Saddam.

The increasing number of entrepreneurs that are manufacturing, servicing and trading in Middle India, without whom the Indian market wouldn't sustain at the levels will surge ahead only by purpose and choice rather than compulsion. The agility and endurance of Middle India entrepreneurs has helped them contribute substantially to the GDP but has to be harnessed more gainfully to have the benefits that those in Upper India get -- an entire ecosystem that offers access to skills, enterprise support, markets, and financiers. When there is an institutionalised ecosystem that is empathetic, responsive and sustainable entrepreneurs will become purpose-driven rather than compulsion-driven. These form the required agenda for dignified entrepreneurship in India.

According to some 2015 study by Nasscom, India ranks third among startup ecosystems with more than 4,200 startups that employ close to 85,000 people. With over $5 billion worth of investment in 2015 and three emerging the analysis projects that the number of Start-Ups in India will increase to more than 11,500 by 2020, with job creation from these entrepreneurs. The number of investors has risen. At the exact same time, the number of funds investing in India grew by 40 percent between 2013 and 2014 and half of these were investing in India for the first time.

However Bengaluru, NCR, and Mumbai continue to lead as the significant startup hubs in the nation. Middle India remains unattractive as a destination for investors and start-ups though this is where employment is already there and is currently waiting for aid. In an impact study of the Jagriti Yatra over 10 years, it was found that twenty-eight percent of the participants established enterprises within 1-3 years after the journey and feature their motivation into both program areas, i.e., during intense network interactions over a couple of weeks at the train and entrepreneur exposure off the train. Many of those established post-Yatra are situated in or have linked through services, such as career counseling for high school students from government schools, low-cost accountants for entrepreneurs, and inputs for farmers largely to Middle India. But the chance for innovation and creation of jobs lies in boosting quality manufacturing in Middle India where the majority of the sector is engaged out of agriculture. While start-ups in services like healthcare diagnostics and telemedicine as well as education have existed for some time and have attracted substantial venture capital, what still challenges formality and reliability are the lack of dignified relationships in value chains comprising markets, production, business process and financing. The Make in India push intends to increase manufacturing's share to 25 percent of GDP.

The informal sector job creators have, according to Ejaz Ghani of the World Bank, "persistently accounted for 80% of employment in manufacturing both in 1989 and 2005." Puja is gradually moving towards purpose and focus and the ecosystem that's been made for her business is helping to create entrepreneurship .

The GES 2017 has the name "Women First, Prosperity for All". Like Puja, they're unable to contribute much to dignified job creation because of ecosystem challenges but although about half of the sector in manufacturing is made up of women entrepreneurs. Skilling for the future's enterprise is a key element in transformation from informal to dignified.

A young and highly articulate Priti Pandey has made waves in Deoria with her strides towards training girls in electronic literacy. Digital is also one of sectors of prominence at the Summit. Priti has won her place at the GES 2017 and will be interacting with those from India and abroad, who, through her and others like her attending the Summit, can start to turn their attention to Middle India.

While an organisation like Jagriti has taken the initial steps in Deoria, the start-ups, especially those in metros and Tier 1 cities, themselves need investors and mentors together with the sensitivity and compassion to translate motivation to intent and operationalisation to create dignified entrepreneurship in underserved areas of India. GES 2017, with its inclusive platform for those like Priti Pandey from Deoria and its high profile involvement, has an opportunity to inspire that.

According to consulting company RedSeer, cellular phones and fashion accounted for roughly 68% of their overall gross earnings by e-commerce firms in India at 2016 while furniture accounted for roughly 1 percent. Furniture market Pepperfry is one of the startups from the sector and a major player.

Mumbai-based Pepperfry (Trendsutra Platform Services Pvt. Ltd ) was founded in 2011 by former eBay executives Ambareesh Murty and Ashish Shah. It started out as an internet furniture store but offers over 12 million goods at the furniture and home vertical with a variety of classes such as Furniture, Home Décor, Lamps & Lighting, Furnishing, Kitchen, Housekeeping, Hardware and Electricals.

Pepperfry claims to have more than 4 million consumers. It’s 480 employees, 1,000 agency personnel, 10,000 merchants, along with a shipping fleet of 400 vehicles which operate in 17 hubs across India and serve customers in 500 cities. Additionally, it supplies installation support and free assembly through its team of more than 250 carpenters.

In Mumbai, its offline store started in 2014. These shops basically act as expertise centers and also offer home design consultation at no cost. It currently has 22 such studios across cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru Delhi Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Chandigarh, Faridabad, and Gurugram. It plans to improve the count from March 2018, part of that is by way of a franchisee version to 50.

Furniture sales accounts for at least 80% of its earnings, although Pepperfry has also ventured into home furnishings and home interior layouts. The average ticket size for furniture is Rs 18,000 ($275) and other household merchandise is Rs 4,000 ($61). It’s approximately 20,000 stock keeping units (SKUs) using a gross margin of 47%.

Pepperfry launched its own furniture rental services in metro cities for younger customers. It has also launched an exchange program in partnership with Zefo, an internet market for pre owned goods.

Pepperfry’s key competition is online furniture company Urban Ladder, that has recorded revenue of Rs 56 crore ($8.5 million) and a reduction of Rs175 crore ($27 million) in financial 2016. UrbanLadder has increased $92 million in overall funding and it last increased $15 million early this year at an estimated rate of $126 million. Like Pepperfry, Urban Ladder has also expanded its presence and entered the home interior design space. It has begun listing on Flipkart and Amazon.

They both face stiff competition from the home layout section from Livspace, that is currently targeting $ 100 million revenue in 2017 and has increased $ 27 million. Silicon Valley-based Houzz , that dominates the internet interior design and providing space internationally, ventured into the Indian market this year. Houzz has increased $400 million at a $4 billion valuation.

In the space, Pepperfry’s main rival is Furlenco. Furlenco has shipped furniture for more than 20 million to houses and contains a furniture use rate of approximately 95%. It is looking to break even by March 2018 and has increased $21 million in funding.

At the retail space, Pepperfry and Future Group’s HomeTown will probably be competing. Swedish furniture manufacturer Ikea, that had revenue of over $35 billion will soon soon be launch its Indian operations. Gig economy startup TaskRabbit was recently obtained by Ikea.

Pepperfry’s revenue in financial 2016 climbed about 300% to Rs 98 crore ($15 million) while its losses climbed about 200% to Rs 154 crore ($23.5 million). It aims to attain profitability by the end of 2018. Its gross merchandize volume (GMV) spanned Rs 1,000 crore ($152 million) at March 2016 and it hopes to triple it to Rs 3,000-crore ($456 million) from March 2018.

Pepperfry is venture funded and has increased $159 million from investors including Goldman Sachs, Norwest Venture Partners (NVP), Bertelsmann India Investments, along with Zodius Capital. It increased $31 million in September 2016 at an undisclosed valuation. In a previous circular in July 2015, it had raised $100 million at a rate of $280 million.

I like the concrete profitability target by the end of 2018. Revenue to funding ratio is reduced, so I’d like to observe this target achieved without funding rounds. The category is cumbersome and heavy from logistics, therefore streamlining that creates barriers to entry. Doing will be term strategy.
