Coroika Pirate AU part one (?)

So, I don’t really have a plot outline in mind, I just wanted to draw some characters as pirates and give them some adventures :D But, I kind of picture some inklings/octolings seeking adventures and wanting to explore the seas. 

There is also a new phenomenon occurring in inklings/octolings in this AU, where certain ones have the ability to turn into giant krakens (not to be confused with the special) for an extended period of time when they are submerged in water. This is definitely a surprise tool that'll help us later 😎👍

Most of their weapons are the same/similar to the ones they use in the manga, just adjusted to fit the concept a bit better :] 

Pirates in this AU will do turf wars, hoping to capture the other’s ship. Unless they have some other motivations ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ But, that’s not really important tbh---- I kinda focused more on having fun designing the characters for this AU. I might make a part two if I ever draw/write more for it? We’ll definitely have to see I guess.

Anyways, I drew the S4 as pirates for this AU :D So, here they are! 

(The S4’s teammates are also on board with them :D I just didn’t really have much planned for them, but they’re there!)

Skull:

For the most part, Skull’s personality is pretty much the same as it was in the original manga. He’s the captain of the S4 pirates and well-known across all seven seas as a sharpshooter & exceptional marksman.

He’s pretty much a pirate you NEVER want to mess with while you’re at sea

He's previously had connections with The X-Blood Pirates and Captain Vintage— but he doesn't like talking about it

Despite his intimidating reputation, Skull is actually a pretty laid back captain— perhaps a bit too laid back 

He can be bribed with food

He has a horrible sense of direction, he leaves that to Army. 

Captain Skull is a pretty funky name if you ask me 

He doesn’t like to steal/raid villages like most pirates do, he likes the action-- but not at the cost of innocent lives.

Mask:

Mask is in charge of ship repairs if there ever needs to be any. Although he’s not the best with tools, he does get help from Aloha

He’s also in charge of the canons aboard the ship

He still wears his gas mask because of hay fever

He likes to play cards whenever he’s bored on the ship.

He’s rather pessimistic and it takes him some time to trust others.

He's sailed with Captain Skull for a few years.

Army:

Army’s the cook aboard the ship. He’s good at making curry :D

Army comes from a noble family, which he ran away from so he could join Captain Skull

B-Sailor and W-Sailor are medics aboard the ship. (B-Sailor is also a sniper) (I didn't know where else to put this info)

Army has a series of manuals containing years and years of battle experience/journals of what it’s like at sea. It’s desired by many other pirate crews because they want the information within them

Army also has a few pet messenger pigeons which he uses to communicate with other pirates nearby.

Army sometimes helps with navigation and has to give directions to the captain.

Aloha:

Aloha & his team were bandits

He’s exceptionally good at pickpocketing and can unlock almost any lock

Aloha & his team were recruited by Army to join because of their skills.

Aloha initially refused Army’s invitation to join the crew, but later accepted it after thinking about it some more.

Aloha’s mostly there to hang out on the ship, Skull doesn’t mind having him around for the most part— Sometimes his pickpocketing skills come in handy though :D

Straw, Snorkel, and Octoglasses also help out sometimes with ship repairs if needed :]

He's not exactly the best at cooking, though he's tried when Army was injured at one point

Oh yeah, Rider is here too :D I have info on him but I haven't had the chance to draw him yet 👀

Hyped for the new Splatoon!

I know for sure some of my characters will be getting redesigns to reflect the new gear and hairstyles. Specifically, Tavian is now going to get the dreads he rightfully deserves and I couldn’t be more happier. I’ve always wanted a dread option for him, and wasn’t completely satisfied with giving him the default ponytail style in 1, and the slick back in 2. It’s so happy for me to finally be able to give Tavian the look he deserves.

Avia I don’t believe will change much due to her having a custom octoling soldier outfit. But who knows? New Octoling armour might look dope on her, we shall see. Her hairstyle won’t change and I doubt her weapon pick won’t either.

Also glad to see a curly hair option for Octolings as well! It’s reminicint of Violet’s hair and the fact a curly haired octo girl was using a hydra like Violet..I immediately lost it. I was gone.

Others time will tell given gear options so they will remain as is for now. Angler 100% will not change as she’s a custom design.

As for coroika stuff...I really, really hope if the manga touches on 3 later down the road and we get some redesigns. Specifically Yellow-Green Team. Rider and co deserve it. I’ve always had this headcanon that Bamboo was secretly a hydra main and seeing a hydra variant shown off in the trailer as the flagship splatling this time around instead of the usual heavy...gives me hope. I can just imagine the new manga arc opening up and the first battle we see of YG team in the new environment they are packing a hydra in their comp. I assume Blazer will have one of the new modded gals (but does bedazzling exist in the Splatlands???). Rider’s dynamo looks the same which is lame. If you’re going to redesign a weapon, at least make the dynamo even more bigger and badass than it already is. If you’re going to give Bamboo a bigger gun to be OP with right out of the gates, you might as well give Rider a bigger OP dynamo roller too. Stealth’s Jet Squelcher I’ll laugh if it gets some horrific dualie modification or the OG Dual Squelcher returns as a new variant of Jet Squelcher (lovable moron will likely forget to use his new subs AGAIN).

Ending on hydra, it’s design got squished and less threatening but I assume that it’s more or less for a looks can be deceiving type thing

As of last summer I have been working on a comic version of a fanfiction I wrote. While I have rough sketched out all pages, I will not be redoing the AU story from scratch to line up with new details in 3. It’s just too much to change with the progress I have so far haha. Instead, future fics about said Mermaid AU will likely retcon and change some things. But the comic as is will be staying true to it’s original fic.
