acute cornelius hickey brain derangement incoming. one thing that strikes me about hickey is how like. presumably he’s been through a lot of shit in his life. we know he’s a career criminal from victorian england, we can reasonably extrapolate that he’s spent a lot of his life in desperate poverty, and something about his personal circumstances was so dire that he was willing to murder a man and risk sneaking aboard a naval expedition through the fucking arctic, just to get away from it. and yet. despite all this, and despite his constant performance of cynical bullshit and casual cruelty, i do kind of get the impression that he still expects life to be… fair? maybe not to everybody else, but certainly to him, the main character of the universe. he thinks he’s been picked out for something special, and he thinks that if he suffers enough, struggles enough, fights hard enough, he’ll eventually get something in return. i mean, isn’t he more strong and clever and ruthless than anyone else? doesn’t he have a special connection with (billy gibson/the captain/goodsir/tuunbaq)? doesn’t he deserve to be rewarded? when everyone else is slipping into despair, he remains an optimist. surely after everything, it’s inevitable that things will go his way in the end.
