Rangeelo Rajasthan: Padharo Mhare Des

Tumblr media
Having lived in Rajasthan for 18 odd years and some 24 years in NCR, I have always wanted to explore the western side of Rajasthan which includes Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. This land of abundant sun, sand and soil was still mysterious to me and evaded me for long until I got an opportunity to go on a road trip this winter of 2023.
Gliding through the glazing smooth butter roads starting from Mumbai expressway in Gurgaon to Jodhpur in Rajasthan, the drive was very smooth except some parts near Ajmer where some re – laying of roads was being carried on but that failed to dampen my enthusiasm in any way.
We touched down Jodhpur by 3 pm and checked into Rani Mahal, an erstwhile haveli run by a mother daughter duo. This 450 years old haveli purchased by Sri Vinod Sa Bhandari against her wife’s wishes was turned into a hotel in 2014. Little did she know that it would become her lifeline and lifelong companion in the time to come when her husband passed away in corona in 2020. From fighting all odds, facing all challenges to supporting her very young kids and putting up a bold facade and protecting her grieving and vulnerable self, she rose to the occasion and took the reins of the hotel in her hands. Smt Nisha Bhandari along with her daughter Ms Mitali Bhandari,is right here at the hotel in the morning to attend to her patrons, asking for feedback, supervising the property and gradually learning the tricks of hospitality industry day by day. Located against the majestic Mehrangarh fort in Nauchowkia, Fatehpur road, Rani Mahal provides a very unique and authentic experience to the guests of living in the city and of the vibrant markets around.
Tumblr media
The interiors of Rani Mahal are quite impressive. It houses 19 rooms, all of which are done differently and gives you the feel of what life the maharajas and maharanis of the bygone days must have lived .Breakfast at the terrace against the Mehrangarh fort in the winter chill and sunshine is a different experience altogether . Dinner again at the terrace with live folk music playing adds a dash of charm to your excitement .Lunch is served in the cosy ambience of the ground floor .
One can visit Toorji ka Jhalra, a stepwell constructed in 1740 which is very near to Rani Mahal. One will be surprised to see a very modern market that has come up there in the midst of the old city, near clock tower for the tourists; catering to all your couturial needs and handicrafts for your homes.
A 5 mins walk from Rani Mahal will lead you the major tourist attraction of Jodhpur, yes, you got it right! It’s the Majestic Mehrangarh Fort. Indulge in some adventurous activities before indulging in its historic grandeur .The zip lining at 6 levels is a major draw for the adventurous lot. You get an amazing experience of zipping through lakes, above the fort and enjoy some good aerial views of the fort and the city.
Tumblr media
Zip-Lining at Mehrangarh Fort (Agency- Flying Fox)
Once inside the fort, you travel back to old times and remain awestruck looking at the weaponry, the relics, the vibrant costumes and turbans ,the massive palaquins, the huge howdahs used by the members of the royal family. The grandeur and architectural beauty of the fort including the sheesh mahal, Phool mahal have to be seen to be believed.
Tumblr media
The restaurant in the fort offers you some really good Rajasthani cuisine like dal- bati churma, traditional thali besides other cuisines . I can vouch that all over Rajasthan ,you will always find good food . The spices used are qualitatively very good but again you will have to savour it to believe it.
Village safari is another tourist attraction that you can pack in your itinerary. The jeep picks you up from the designated point and the driver cum guide takes you to the Bishnoi village enlightening and immersing you with the different aspects of their culture . Not many know that the Bishnoi community of 15 000/ people have a place in history as we read about the ‘chipko movement’. Some 439 bishnois had laid down their lives to prevent the felling of Khejari trees which are sacred to them .Not many know again that it’s the same community that was behind Salman khan’s imprisonment for the infamous black buck hunting case .They believe that their guru Jambkeshwar has been reborn as Black buck, hence the respect for the creature is something that they will never compromise with. Bishnoi, as they got the name from Hindi words for 20 and 9. They believe in 29 principles, hence the name of the community. The foremost principle of their culture is that they don’t burn the dead bodies but bury them as they believe that a lot of wood is burned and wasted in the process. They worship trees, nature and wildlife. Secondly, they hold women in high esteem. The female mukhiya has a distinct appearance from the rest of the ladies in the family like she wears a red skirt, a red turban, a nath and a heavy anklet .
Tumblr media
The male mukhiya wears a white turban. He prepares very diligently a drink made of opium which is used to relax their bodies and also on occasions like wedding. They do not take any kind of medicines ,whatsoever ,but rely only on opium for any aches or illnesses but they understand that moderate consumption is the key.
As you navigate further into the open village, you can see black bucks, nilgais, peacocks chinkaras and foxes openly roaming and grazing without fear . You also get to see the live workshop by durry weavers.A durry can take 140 hours of weaving by 2 people on the loom. Cotton and camel wool are used for durry making. The former can fetch double the amount while the latter is cheaper and non- dyeable too.
Block printing live workshops are very interesting to witness. It’s amazing to see vegetable colors and natural dyes being used to transform some plain drab cloth into a vibrant and valuable printed cloth. It’s notable that different castes like chipa, Patels, Bishnois are identified by the different clothes they wear . It’s like understanding that clothes are their I – cards.
As we move to our another district Jaisalmer on roads paved to perfection, I see vast stretches of barren land sans any high rises , my eyes unaccustomed to see. As far as you can see, there are herds of cattle, sheep, cows, goats claiming their land ; turbaned men on charpoys leisurely pulling out the day with no haste ; carefree kids playing some local games and women carrying haystacks on their heads to be used as fodder for the cattle or fuel for cooking.
Enroute Jaisalmer, one can see dates farms and vendors selling so many different varieties of dates that we may not even have heard the names before.
There are certain interesting things you can do like jeep safari, dune bashing, camel riding and parasailing on the Thar desert against the backdrop of the rising sun or against the sun set. Both of these times offer exclusive experiences to cherish.
Tumblr media
As I bid adieu to the desert , my heart longs to come back once again and re witness its charm and glory ; savour it’s traditional food ; immerse in the folk music and dance  and imbibe the simplicity of this land of sand.

These experiences immerse visitors in the local culture while offering moments of tranquility and adventure, making Rajasthan a must-visit destination for every traveler.
Tumblr media
Here are some unique things to do in Rajasthan.
1. A Thar Desert camel safari:
Tumblr media
Sail through the vast Thar Desert on a camel safari, one of Rajasthan's most iconic and unique experiences. For starting this adventure, cities like Jaisalmer, also referred to as the "Golden City," provide the ideal starting point. You'll see the stark beauty of the desert up close as you traverse the golden sand dunes on the back of a camel. You can choose to go on a day trip or prolong your adventure by spending the night under the stars camping in the desert. For a full cultural immersion, these safaris frequently feature traditional Rajasthani performances, regional food, and a bonfire. This is an incredibly memorable experience because of the calm tranquility of the desert and the excitement of riding a camel.
2. Remain in a Historic Mansion:
Tumblr media
Rajasthan is well known for its lavish palaces, many of which are now upscale historical hotels. There's no better way to immerse yourself in the splendor of Rajasthan's past than by booking a stay at one of these royal residences. These hotels, which range from the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur to the breathtaking Lake Palace in Udaipur, combine traditional charm and contemporary conveniences. You'll experience a life fit for a king or queen, surrounded by exquisite furnishings, dexterous carvings, and stunning architecture. In addition to expansive gardens and courtyards, these palaces frequently have royal dining rooms where you may enjoy real Rajasthani food. A visit to a heritage hotel is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the splendor and grace of Rajasthan's past.
3. Discover Jodhpur, the Blue City:
Tumblr media
Jodhpur presents a singular visual treat. Known as the "Blue City" because of the blue-painted houses in its old town. Discovering this vibrant city's tiny streets is an adventure in and of itself. There are many photo opportunities to be had when the view of the blue houses contrasts with the dry landscape. Although the colour blue has historically been connected to Brahmins, or the priestly class, many other people have also come to embrace the colour. Strolling around the streets, you'll come across old havelis, thriving markets, and regional artisans. One of India's biggest and most striking forts, Mehrangarh Fort, towers over the Blue City. Travelers can experience a unique combination of historical insight and cultural immersion when they explore Jodhpur.
4. Attend the Camel Fair in Pushkar:
One of Rajasthan's biggest and most distinctive cultural events is the Pushkar Camel Fair. Every year, the lively Pushkar fair draws traders from all over Rajasthan who come to buy and sell horses, camels, and other livestock. Pushkar is a small town. The fair offers a range of competitions, including camel races and beauty pageants, traditional Rajasthani music, and dance shows, in addition to the camel trading. Shoppers can take in the vibrant atmosphere or indulge in local jewelry, crafts, and textiles. The fair, which usually takes place in October or November, offers a unique chance to get a close-up look at rural life and Rajasthani cultural customs.
5. Flight in a Hot Air Balloon over Jaipur:
A hot air balloon ride over Jaipur offers breathtaking views of the Pink City's famous landmarks and is an incredibly unique and thrilling experience. You'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Amber Fort, City Palace, Jal Mahal, and the busy markets below as you float gently above the city at sunrise or sunset. The ride offers a tranquil diversion from the bustle of the city and a distinctive viewpoint of Jaipur's royal architecture and the surrounding countryside. For thrill-seekers and those seeking a romantic or family-friendly adventure, this aerial adventure is an excellent way to see the city from a new perspective.

Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors to Rajasthan: A Complete Guide
Tumblr media
Rajasthan, the Land of Kings, is one of India’s most culturally vibrant and historically rich states. With its grand palaces, majestic forts, endless deserts, and vibrant markets, it’s no wonder that this destination tops the bucket list of travelers from across the globe. If you’re visiting Rajasthan for the first time, the experience can be both exciting and overwhelming due to its sheer diversity. To ensure you make the most of your visit, here are some essential travel tips tailored specifically for first-time visitors.
1. Plan Your Itinerary Wisely
Rajasthan is vast, with each city offering a different flavor of history and culture. While it may be tempting to cover everything in one trip, it’s important to prioritize based on the time you have. Popular destinations like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, and Pushkar are must-visits, but try not to cram too many cities into a short trip. A well-planned itinerary with 2-3 days in each city will allow you to explore at a relaxed pace without feeling rushed.
Consider booking a tour package with Sara Tour and Taxi, which offers customizable itineraries to ensure that you visit all the essential spots without feeling overwhelmed.
2. Best Time to Visit Rajasthan
Rajasthan experiences an extreme climate, with very hot summers and chilly winters. The ideal time to visit Rajasthan is from October to March when the weather is cool and comfortable for sightseeing. The desert state can be unbearably hot from April to June, so it's best to avoid these months if you’re not used to the heat.
If you're visiting during the winter months, especially in December and January, remember to pack some warm clothing as the desert can get surprisingly cold at night.
3. Respect Local Culture and Traditions
Rajasthan is a state steeped in tradition and cultural heritage. As a visitor, it’s important to respect the local customs. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Dress modestly: While Rajasthan is tourist-friendly, it’s still a conservative place, especially in rural areas. Dressing modestly (covering shoulders and knees) will help you blend in and show respect for the local culture.
Remove shoes before entering temples or sacred spaces: Be mindful of removing footwear before stepping into temples or even some homes.
Photography etiquette: Always ask for permission before photographing people, especially in villages or at religious sites.
4. Stay in Heritage Properties
Rajasthan is known for its royal palaces and havelis (traditional mansions). Many of these properties have been converted into heritage hotels, giving visitors a chance to live like royalty. While modern hotels are also available, staying in a heritage property will provide a more immersive experience. Whether it’s the magnificent Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur or the quaint havelis in Jodhpur, staying at these properties offers a glimpse into Rajasthan’s regal past.
If you’re traveling with family or a group of friends, you can easily book a Tempo Traveller in Udaipur to ensure comfortable transportation between cities while enjoying a luxurious stay at these heritage properties.
5. Explore Beyond the Main Attractions
While Rajasthan’s major cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur are well-known tourist destinations, don’t forget to explore some offbeat locations that showcase the state’s true essence. Places like Bundi, Chittorgarh, and Shekhawati offer an authentic experience with fewer crowds. These lesser-known spots are perfect for travelers who want to explore Rajasthan’s hidden gems without the hustle and bustle of tourist-heavy areas.
6. Indulge in Rajasthani Cuisine
Rajasthan’s cuisine is as rich and diverse as its culture. From spicy curries to mouthwatering desserts, the food here is a treat for the senses. Some must-try dishes include:
Dal Baati Churma: A classic Rajasthani dish consisting of baked wheat dumplings served with lentils and a sweet mixture of ground wheat and jaggery.
Laal Maas: A spicy mutton curry cooked with red chilies, popular among non-vegetarians.
Ghevar: A popular dessert made with flour and soaked in sugar syrup, usually served during festivals.
Make sure to visit local eateries or dhabas (roadside restaurants) to sample authentic Rajasthani flavors. For a unique experience, some tour operators, including Sara Tour and Taxi, offer food tours as part of their Rajasthan packages.
7. Travel Safely
While Rajasthan is generally safe for tourists, there are a few safety tips to keep in mind:
Stay hydrated: The desert climate can be harsh, especially during the daytime. Carry a water bottle and hydrate regularly to avoid dehydration.
Watch your belongings: Like any tourist destination, petty theft can occur in crowded markets or busy areas. Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in places like Jaipur’s Johari Bazaar or Jodhpur’s Clock Tower Market.
Use reliable transportation: It’s best to rely on trusted tour operators for transportation. Sara Tour and Taxi offers well-maintained vehicles and professional drivers, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey throughout Rajasthan.
8. Shop Responsibly
Rajasthan is a shopper’s paradise, known for its vibrant handicrafts, textiles, jewelry, and souvenirs. You can find everything from block-printed fabrics and blue pottery to intricately designed silver jewelry and leather goods. However, it’s important to shop responsibly:
Bargain, but be respectful: While bargaining is common in most markets, always be respectful and avoid lowballing, especially when buying handcrafted items.
Beware of fakes: When buying precious items like gemstones or silver, ensure that you’re purchasing from a reputable seller to avoid being duped.
Support local artisans: Rajasthan is home to many talented artisans who create beautiful handicrafts. Whenever possible, buy directly from them to support their craft.
9. Be Mindful of Wildlife
Rajasthan is home to several wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, including Ranthambore National Park and Sariska Tiger Reserve. If you plan to visit these areas, always respect the wildlife by maintaining a safe distance and following the park’s rules. Wildlife tours are best conducted with certified guides to ensure the safety of both the animals and visitors.
10. Hire a Local Guide
To truly understand Rajasthan’s rich history and culture, hiring a knowledgeable local guide is essential. Many of the stories behind the palaces, forts, and monuments are steeped in history, folklore, and legends. A good guide will provide insights into the region’s heritage, making your visit more meaningful.
Local guides can be arranged by tour operators like Sara Tour and Taxi, ensuring that you get authentic and knowledgeable service throughout your trip.
Conclusion
A trip to Rajasthan is a journey through time—filled with ancient forts, royal palaces, and colorful traditions. As a first-time visitor, proper planning and understanding of the local culture can greatly enhance your experience. By following these travel tips and booking with a reliable service like Sara Tour and Taxi, you’ll ensure that your first trip to Rajasthan is filled with memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime. Whether you’re exploring the desert dunes, enjoying a royal retreat, or soaking in the vibrant culture, Rajasthan promises an unforgettable adventure.
