Exploring Cochin with Car Rentals: The Ultimate Guide to a Hassle-Free Experience
Cochin, often referred to as the Queen of the Arabian Sea, is a vibrant city where history meets modernity. From its stunning backwaters and beaches to its rich cultural heritage and bustling markets, Cochin has something for every traveler. To truly experience everything this city has to offer, having your own mode of transportation is invaluable. This is where car rentals come into play. Cochin Car Rental offers unparalleled convenience, flexibility, and the freedom to explore the city and its surroundings at your own pace. Here’s why opting for a car rental in Cochin is the best way to enhance your travel experience.
Why Rent a Car in Cochin?
Cochin is a city with diverse attractions spread across various locations. Public transportation can be limiting, and relying on taxis can become expensive and inconvenient. Renting a car provides several benefits that can elevate your trip:
Flexibility: With a rental car, you have the freedom to create your own itinerary. Whether you want to visit the historic Fort Kochi, explore the scenic backwaters of Alappuzha, or take a spontaneous trip to nearby destinations like Munnar or Thekkady, a rental car gives you the flexibility to go where you want, when you want.
Convenience: Car rentals offer the convenience of door-to-door service. You can pick up and drop off the car at your preferred location, whether it’s the airport, your hotel, or any other spot in the city. This eliminates the hassle of coordinating transportation and allows you to focus on enjoying your trip.
Comfort: Traveling in a rental car ensures that you have a comfortable and private space to relax between destinations. You can enjoy the journey at your own pace, with the option to stop whenever you like.
Cost-Effective: For families or groups, renting a car can be more cost-effective than taking multiple taxis or relying on public transport. It also allows you to explore less accessible areas without worrying about transportation costs adding up.
Local Exploration: Cochin is surrounded by numerous hidden gems, including quaint villages, serene beaches, and lush plantations. Having a rental car allows you to venture off the beaten path and discover these lesser-known attractions.
Choosing the Right Car Rental Service in Cochin
When it comes to renting a car in Cochin, it’s important to choose a service that meets your specific needs. Here’s what to consider:
Range of Vehicles: Depending on your travel plans, you may need different types of vehicles. Look for a rental service that offers a wide range of options, from compact cars for solo travelers to SUVs or luxury vehicles for families or special occasions.
Pricing and Packages: Compare pricing and packages across different rental companies. Some services offer hourly, daily, or weekly rates, as well as special deals for longer rentals. Make sure to understand what’s included in the price, such as fuel, insurance, and additional driver options.
Booking and Pickup Options: Check the booking process and pickup options. Online booking platforms allow you to reserve a car in advance, ensuring availability when you arrive. Some services also offer airport pickup, which can save you time and effort upon arrival.
Customer Service: Reliable customer service is crucial when renting a car. Choose a company known for its responsive and helpful staff, especially in case of emergencies or last-minute changes to your plans.
Vehicle Condition: Ensure that the rental company maintains its vehicles well. A clean, well-maintained car will provide a smoother and more enjoyable driving experience.
Insurance and Safety: Verify the insurance coverage provided with the rental. Comprehensive insurance options can offer peace of mind, protecting you against unforeseen incidents. Also, check if the vehicles are equipped with safety features like airbags, ABS, and GPS.
Top Destinations to Explore with a Rental Car in Cochin
Once you’ve secured your rental car, it’s time to hit the road and explore the best that Cochin and its surroundings have to offer. Here are some must-visit destinations:
Fort Kochi: Steeped in history, Fort Kochi is a blend of colonial architecture, quaint cafes, and cultural landmarks. Drive through its narrow streets to visit sites like St. Francis Church, the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets, and the Indo-Portuguese Museum.

Marine Drive: For a relaxing evening, head to Marine Drive, a picturesque promenade overlooking the backwaters. It’s a great spot to unwind, take a boat ride, and enjoy the sunset.
Cherai Beach: Located about 25 kilometers from the city, Cherai Beach is a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of Cochin. The drive to Cherai offers scenic views of villages, paddy fields, and the backwaters.
Vypin Island: Accessible by road and ferry, Vypin Island is a quiet retreat known for its beautiful beaches and lighthouses. It’s a great destination for a peaceful day trip.

Tips for a Smooth Car Rental Experience
To make the most of your car rental in Cochin, keep these tips in mind:
Plan Your Route: Familiarize yourself with the routes and destinations you plan to visit. Using a GPS or a reliable map app can help you navigate the city and avoid getting lost.
Understand the Local Traffic Rules: While driving in Cochin, it’s important to adhere to local traffic laws and regulations. Be cautious of busy intersections, pedestrian crossings, and two-wheelers, which are common in Indian cities.
Refuel Before Returning: Make sure to refuel the car before returning it to the rental company. Most companies require the car to be returned with the same amount of fuel as when you picked it up.
Check for Damages: Before driving off, inspect the car for any existing damages and report them to the rental company. This step can prevent disputes about damages when you return the car.
Keep Emergency Contacts Handy: Save the rental company’s contact details and any roadside assistance numbers in case you need help during your trip.
Conclusion
Renting a car in Cochin is the key to unlocking a hassle-free and enriching travel experience. Whether you’re in the city for a few days or planning an extended stay, having your own vehicle allows you to explore at your own pace and discover the hidden gems that make Cochin truly special. With a wide range of rental options available, you can find the perfect car to suit your needs and make your journey through this captivating city unforgettable. The Pink City! (or Kathleen Rides a Camel.)
Tumblr media
Peacock Gate- City Palace
March 5, 2023- Wow. Nearly a month has passed since I last really wrote a blog entry. I did post some photos from our trip to Jaipur and will post some more now. But I’d better get caught up, because I have a lot to tell you about our 10-day trip to Kochi that is just now drawing to a close.
First, though, Jaipur. February-2023.
We went for two reasons:
Jaipur is part of the Golden Triangle: (along with Delhi and Agra)--part of any “must see” tour of India—and we’d never been.
We wanted to visit the Jawahar Kala Kendra cultural center there, a place that seems ideal as a tour stop for our project with Khalsa College students.
The city is lovely--and also chaotic, like so many big cities, especially in India. We chose an Airbnb outside of the city in the village of Amber, and that was a wise decision for us. It’s beautiful there, and the small hotel where we stayed was a wonderful oasis after a day of sight-seeing and meetings.
Tumblr media
The garden of our hotel
The first day of our visit was our day to explore Jaipur proper after our very productive meeting at JKK. We “did” the sights: the Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), the City Palace, and the Jantar Mantar (observatory created by Sawai Jai Singh II in the early 18th century.)
Tumblr media
Palace of the Winds (the latticed windows were designed so that the women of the court could look out on goings-on without being viewed by the outside world.)

The City Palace

The observatory
Tumblr media
My space geek husband particularly loved this place.
I’m glad we visited, but after a walk through the old city, I was ready for peace and quiet up the hill in Amber.
Tumblr media
The next day, we were incredibly fortunate to tag along on a guided tour of sights in Amber by our hotel host. He had two friends visiting from Germany, a retired couple who have traveled to India many times over the past 20-30 years. Our host is a font of knowledge about the area, and as a local, knows all the secret little spots.
Tumblr media
Two ancient Hindu temples.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original Amber Palace (used BEFORE the one built in 1599 that everyone goes to!) We were the only people exploring these little-known sights, and they were fascinating. Standing in the long-deserted (and somewhat forgotten) rooms of the king's wives, the hall where he held court, the many halls and staircases--there was a palpable energy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We ended the tour at The Amber Fort, which is (for me) the most worthwhile sight in Jaipur. It’s massive, and beautiful and while there were a lot of tourists, it is still possible to find moments of quiet where one can imagine the lives lived within those walls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the path up to the fort I heard music being that said one thing to me: snake charmer! I know—at this point, this ancient art has been pretty much relegated to tourist spots—but I had never seen one, always wanted to, and was thrilled to finally stumble upon one (well, I was careful not to stumble- as the guy had several baskets containing sleeping cobras on the ground beside him. ) It was high noon, so the snakes were not as inclined to cooperate as they are in morning or evening. But it was still a thrill for me – with the little extra excitement of a bit of danger…that cobra was only about 2 feet from where I crouched on the ground to watch. (Video in "Faces of Jaipur" post to follow.)
Tumblr media
After we finished the fort, it was time for me to check off yet another item on my bucket list—and while David attempted to convince me that I did NOT need to ride a camel- I was undeterred. Our host brought us down the hill to the outskirts of the city- where I was able to have a very satisfying (and surprisingly comfortable) ride on “Pushbah”. Touristy? You bet. But something I wanted to experience once in my life.
After one more stop at an out of the way (and not too touristy) gem store (where I was able to pick up some beautiful earrings for the girl we sponsor in Kerala and her social worker—as well as one pair of citrine studs that I could not resist for myself) we were back up the hill for our final night in the hotel’s beautiful garden (with the illuminated Amber Palace seemingly close enough to touch.)
Tumblr media
Thumbs-up for a rather perfect weekend (and a direct flight from Amritsar!) My motto for this Fulbright: seize the day. No matter how much we see and experience, we will not see nearly all of what this country has to offer. But I’m determined to do my best!

Surrounded by the Vembanad Lake, Vaikom is filled with beautiful water bodies and boasts of a serene village life. The natural beauty of the surrounding greenery is just a tip of the iceberg when it comes to the treasures that await visitors to this bit of land. Backwater cruises, the handloom industry, extrusion of lime shells, pottery making, Kalamezhuthu, the traditional feast etc are some of the many experiences that await travellers.Kochi (also known as Cochin) is a city in southwest India's coastal Kerala state. It has been a port since 1341, when a flood carved out its harbor and opened it to Arab, Chinese and European merchants. Sites reflecting those influences include Fort Kochi, a settlement with tiled colonial bungalows and diverse houses of worship. Cantilevered Chinese fishing nets, typical of Kochi, have been in use for centuries. The Kerala backwaters is the rather unappealing name given to the peaceful and picturesque palm-lined network of lagoons, lakes, rivers, and canals that run inland from the coast of Kerala, from Kochi (Cochin) to Kollam (Quilon). The main entry point, situated between Kochi and Kollam, is Alleppey. At the heart of the backwaters is vast Vembanad Lake. Traditionally, the backwaters are used by locals for transport, fishing, and agriculture. Annual snake boat races, held along the backwaters, also provide a great source of entertainment for the locals and tourists alike. The lush green landscape, diverse wildlife, and houses and villages that line the backwaters make a journey along these waterways seem like a journey through another world. No wonder the backwaters is one of the must-visit tourist places in Kerala. Don't miss it! These dreamy photos of the Kerala backwaters show some of the attractions. How to Experience the Backwaters Most people who visit the Kerala backwaters hire a traditional Kerala-style houseboat (called a kettuvallam). It's a quintessential Kerala experience and one of the most tranquil and relaxing things you can do in India. Freshly cooked Indian food and chilled beer make the experience even more enjoyable. You can either go on a day trip or stay overnight on the boat. This guide to Kerala houseboat hire has more information.
A trip on a houseboat can also be combined with staying at a resort, hotel, or home stay along the backwaters. The resorts and luxury hotels commonly have their own houseboats, and offer overnight and sunset cruises. Alternatively, other hotels can easily arrange a houseboat for you. Most of the accommodations are clustered along the banks of Vembanad Lake near Kumarakom in the Kottayam district.Further off the beaten track, Breeze Backwater Homes sits on the backwaters between Kochi and Alleppey (about 40 minutes from Fort Kochi). This quiet homestay offers eco-friendly cottages and reasonably-priced overnight backwater trips in quality non-motorized houseboats.
If you're traveling on a budget, it's possible to go on one of the many half or full day backwater tourist cruises that are on offer. Alternatively, if you want to check out the backwaters very cheaply, you can take one of the public boat services operated by the State Water Transport Department, such as the one between Alleppey and Kottayam. Travel time is two and a half hours, with numerous daily departures. The boat service passes through several small canals and villages. Do be aware that there aren't any toilets on the boat.
You stay along the canals, watch the houseboats go by, and catch the public boat from a jetty. Some recommended, inexpensive options near Alleppey are Palmy Lake Resort and Lemon Dew Home stay.
Or, for somewhere a bit more upmarket, tucked away south of Alleppy check out Ourland Island Backwater Resort or Warmth Lake Haven. In the same area, Riverine Resort is a bit cheaper.
For a small village experience on the backwaters, try Riverdale Villa boutique homestay in north Kumarakom.
