The innate feeling of love humans have for everything.. when they find out that something is unloved they go out of their way to love it unconditionally. Something so deep rooted in our genes it can't be removed. To find something broken and battered to love, because it satiates a need. Why do we do that? Why do you do that?

Deltarune Knight Theory
Spoilers Ahead
----------------------------
The Knight, in all known cases, is called by 'it/its/they/them' pronouns. I will be using 'it/they' pronouns for this theory.
Who is the Knight?
Most people know by now that the Knight is the main antaganist within Deltarune.
It is the creator of the first and second dark fountain, in a bid to bring everlasting darkness to the land.
It is a manipulator. Someone who can convince people like the Spade King and Queen into playing into their own destruction within the Roaring.
And in this theory, I propose it is the vessel we make at the start of the game.
Tumblr media
This theory is viable because the game saves the vessel data.
At the very start of the game, you can create a vessel. This vessel is promptly thrown into oblivion and replaced with Kris.
The exact wording is 'will now be discarded'
Tumblr media
'No longer useful or desirable'
Useful and desirable?
Well, where have I seen that before?
Tumblr media
Ah, yes. The entire Darkner species, at least how it is commonly described.
Darkners are repeatedly mentioned as people who's purpose is to be useful to lightners, to be desired.
And when they are nolonger, when they get left behind because they aren't needed or wanted enough?
Tumblr media
You get the Chaos King. Someone who is angry abour being left in shadows and being stripped of meaning.
And then the Queen.
Who just wants to make everyone happy. To be useful, like a computer commonly is. To be desirable. To make things better.
A Darkner who can't assist or be good for Lightners has no meaning. The King didn't want that, he said the Knight gave Darkners a new meaning.
It is easy to see how the vessel could fit with this theme. The theme of Darkners who want to be loved but aren't, who want to be useful but are 'discarded'.
Let's look at this text -
"UNUSED_slash_UNUSED_gml_1_0": "Where...",
"UNUSED_slash_UNUSED_gml_2_0": "Where am I?",
"UNUSED_slash_UNUSED_gml_3_0": "Hello...? Anyone...?",
"UNUSED_slash_UNUSED_gml_4_0": "Is... is anybody out there...?",
"UNUSED_slash_UNUSED_gml_5_0": "Someone!? Anyone!? Can anyone hear me!?",
"UNUSED_slash_UNUSED_gml_6_0": "...",
"UNUSED_slash_UNUSED_gml_7_0": "It's dark.",
"UNUSED_slash_UNUSED_gml_8_0": "It's so dark here.",
"UNUSED_slash_UNUSED_gml_9_0": "Someone, anyone, if you can hear me...",
"UNUSED_slash_UNUSED_gml_10_0": "Say something... please...",
There have been many theories about who this could be, ranging to Gaster to Dess to whoever else is on the chopping block.
It is in my substantiated opinion that this must be the vessel.
When you talk to Spamton about 'Fear' in his shop, he goes on a bit of a tirade before commenting oddly~
Tumblr media
And then he denies having ever heard anything said, before saying~
Tumblr media
While staring directly at the camera.
Astute people would know by now that Spamton is one of the characters who is quite distinct when it comes to Kris and the player, with few exceptions.
For example, during a neutral/pacifist route, Spamton uses Kris's name constantly, while in Snowgrave, he doesn't use it once. The limit on how much he knows is unknown, but what we should know is that him looking right at the camera wasn't just for creep factor.
This message is for us. The player.
Gaster wouldn't call for you, he and you were connected a while ago.
Dess wouldn't call for you, there's no reason for her too. Maybe Kris, but why you?
No, the person who would call for you would be the exact person you left behind.
The text itself is similar to the unused text, but in the Japanese version, the unused text and Spamtons dialogue are the same.
Credit to @suzyundertale for pointing this out. This is their post that explains the Japanese text.
But there's more.
Here is what Spamton has to say if you talk to him about the 'Knight'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spamton seems to be unable to disclose whatever information he has about the Knight.
But why? What is the ending of that sentence?
Whatever it was, it sent Spamton in a frenzy, talking to someone we can't see.
This doesn't feel like Gaster. Gaster has been articulate and well thought out all the times we've heard him. Gaster suddenly strangling Spamton for whatever reason seems out of character.
It's someone who doesn't want Kris to know whatever information Spamton has, or maybe they don't want you to know, desprete enough that it reacts with violence when Spamton mentions anything about the Knight.
That's two occasions of Spamton being controlled.
One is by someone, hiding information about the Knight.
One is by someone stuck in darkness, calling out for the player.
Perhaps they are the same person.
But why?
Why create the dark fountains? Why hide information? How did they escape the darkness?
Well, quite simply, they want to be loved.
Let's look at Ralsei, shall we?
Ralsei looks like Asriel. Ralsei in most ways, is like Asriel. But he's off. He's lonely. He's a prince with no subjects, who follows the story as it's told and is very much in the mind of doing everything for the sake of Lightners.
Quite easily, we can say he's Kris's headband or whatever. Something Inconsequential.
But what if the Knight made him?
If at any point the vessel saw Kris, it would see the life they have, one with Asriel who loves them dearly.
To add insult to injury, the vessel looks so much like Kris, it's uncanny.
If you were lonely and admiring of someone elses life, why not create someone who looks like their brother? Someone made of the same darkness you are, made from the void. I doubt that wouldn't be able to witstand going to a slightly different dark fountain.
But, something happens, who knows what, and you and the lonely prince hardly ever meet. Never for long.
I don't doubt that Ralsei was actually lonely. It fit's with his character too well for him not to have been. But he isn't like other darkners, but he isn't a lightner if him disappearing whenever he goes down has anything to say about it, so void magic goat boy is my best guess.
Perhaps he was even based around the red headband, with the vessel only adding more power ontop of him and his fountain.
(I may make a seperate theory about Ralsei later, tell me if you wanna see that)
This is to say that the Knight is either jealous or admiring of Kris and their life. Kris is alive, they make their own choices, they get to live.
The Knight, the vessel, doesn't get that. It wants to live like Kris but can't, so they opt to being more like them and replicating their life instead.
It wants to be like them, perhaps even in choice of weapon?
Tumblr media
A knife. Just like Kris's.
This is one of the main contributers to why people think the Knight is Kris. After all, what is the chances that the Knight and Kris both use knives to punture darkness fountains?
But I feel like this explains it nicely.
Heck, the fact that the Knight is the Knight may be because of Kris/the player and the vessel are so similar and the players form is that of a knight.
And this theory isn't even going to go into the connections between the Knight and Gaster, and inherent connection with the Vessel.
So what is their goal?
Well, to put it simply, I have no idea.
To put it less simply, I have several ideas but all can be argued for and against. Let's simplify this with a bulleted list. I'll add a A-F for how much I like it, A being 'I like this one the most', F being 'viable, but I hate it.'
It's goal is to screw Kris over. It's a situation where their fully in the belief that you abandoned it for Kris and hates them as a result. D
It's goal is to cover the world in darkness so it can truely exist. After all, if all is covered in darkness, then they can be seen and heard and no longer be discarded. As someone made from the void, it would survive the Roaring, and be able to lead the Lightners in the dark, finally being useful. B
It's their goal to get you back. It thinks if it can reobtain you, they will feel alive. This will backfire as now a more independent vessel is thown into the feeling of being controlled. C
It's their goal to screw you over. They want Kris on their side, kind of like 'partners', if you will. A
My only big problem with the last one is I have no idea where the player would be in that situation. Posessing someone else who allows you to in a pacifist run and forcing posession in a snowgrave esc run? Who knows.
I mostly like it because of the thematic tension and the player being pointed at as the villian despite us not really doing anything? At least in a pacifist route.
We didn't want to leave the vessel behind, but we were forced to.
But what is the vessel supposed to think...
Tumblr media
When it never could hear you say you loved it.
It may be a combo of multiple motives, or maybe I missed the mark dramtically.
--------
I may make a secound part if people bring more things up and I find more. I mean, there are things I haven't mentioned but you can look into it yourself.
I have other theories I wanna put out but I also want this to not just be a theory blog? Like, I do art too, cmon brain.
I wanna make a Hells roar theory eventually. And something on Ralsei. But I'm doing art before that I swear to god.
Thank you for reading my theory! Please tell me what you think!

Hey Char, been a while. I'm curious, did you play the Snowgrave route of chapter 2 and if so what were your thoughts? I played it and it makes me think of you with the horror elements, so I wondered if you gave it a go.
Hello, Bun! Long time, no see, indeed. I’m glad to hear you thought of me as I primarily associate playing Deltarune and Undertale with you (you were the one who bought me it in the first place, after all, and convinced me to play it. Even when I listen to the soundtrack I think specifically of how you enjoyed it!)
Also, Napstablook = Krickis as far as I am concerned. Where there is Napstablook, I am thinking of Krickis. On actual serious thoughts, the Snowgrave Route is certainly an exciting one. I have not played it myself (Kris and Noelle are so young and I can barely manage to play the genocide route in Undertale) but I did watch another person play through it and my thoughts are as follows: wow!
Toby Fox most definitely has a hidden penchant for horror and it’s planted all across Undertale and Deltarune (Alphy’s lab in the true pacifist run in Undertale immediately comes to mind.) It’s a lot to do with the environment and atmosphere he’s capable of building in all areas of the game creating process, whether it be music or art design or battle mechanics (I imagine with the help of others too, but unfortunately I’m not very familiar with who works on the games) and creepy seems to come easy to him! I know you didn’t ask about Spamton, but his boss battle is another fantastic example of this. That horror element is a lot more... nightmare-y, though, I suppose? What I mean to say is, it’s almost silly. It doesn’t feel as real as what’s happening with Kris actively throughout the game, or what happens to Berdly. Part of this is because fighting Spamton doesn’t have consequences (that are obvious to the player.) The worst that happens is that Kris appears to have a panic attack afterwards and is visibly upset by what they’ve been forced by us to witness, but what I like specifically about the Snowgrave Route is that this lasts and it’s really explored. The lasting consequence it seems to have on the psyche of Noelle and Kris and the implication of the entire route is horror through and through, in a fantastic, amazing, wowza way.
And now, because I am a little bit too excited to talk about this, an unedited and possibly impossible to read ramble about horror and Noelle and Kris below the cut. The way I describe the game and the role the player has might be upsetting, so please do not read unless you’re very comfortable with body control horror etc..
Deltarune isn’t a horror game but its premise mirrors one in multiple ways and I find that very fascinating. It is almost more unnerving that such horrible experiences are masked by the fun, whacky outer layers. One could play Deltarune and never find Jevil or Spamtom’s boss fight or play the Snowgrave route and remain blissfully unaware of what lurks beneath a very normal (if occasionally dark!) adventure story.
Despite this, there is a lot to be said about Kris and the player’s control over them, as well as some choice words from Noelle about Kris’ recent behaviour and demeanour. It’s hard not to assume that Kris is possessed by us. We can force them to say things but they can react to these dialogue choices and become visibly upset at the actions we force upon them, so even playing the game as intended without discovering anything remotely below the surface, it’s impossible to ignore what actually playing the game and controlling Kris does to them. Essentially, stripping away all of the scariest parts of Deltarune doesn’t matter, because its actual premise, where you play, not as Kris, but as an entity CONTROLLING Kris, is in itself horrific! Kris is a child, at most sixteen and I certainly believe younger than that, and no amount of drawing them weirdly tall and lanky and emo-y can change that.
Possession and inability to control one’s self are heavily utilised in horror. When you consider how many times you’ve watched someone be tied down, forced to witness whatever is happening to them in real time, or the general horror and gore associated with demon possession in even current mainstream movies like The Conjuring (or even a mix of both! Media that explores being trapped inside the body without any control while being possessed and the effects it has on your mind is not common enough) it’s easy to see the connections between a lot of horror tropes and Kris’ ‘problem’. Only thing is, we’re directly perpetuating this horror every time we play. We are the demon! We are the person who is strapping someone down and forcing them to witness horrific things by our hand! I mean, it’s just fantastic. Deltarune is by no means a horror but it certainly feels like it. I suppose that’s the power of implication!
Being more specific to the Snowgrave route (I promise the previous ramble was related!) the player extends this control to Noelle, arguably the most vulnerable and ‘helpless’ character in the game so far besides Kris themselves (and even then, that’s in a much more literal way.) unlike Kris, who physically has no choice, Noelle feels as though she has no choice. She’s a pushover and unable to prevent who she perceives as her childhood friend from forcing her to do things she doesn’t want to. Her relationship with her mother seems to play into this complex. Noelle has always been one of my favourite characters— even with what little we see of her in chapter one, she makes a lasting impression and it’s not surprising that people wanted her to be a party member in this chapter. (The irony!) But this newest chapter also furthers an interesting trait of hers, namely, her fascination with fear. She enjoys being scared, she gets a rush from being in dangerous situations, feeling unsafe. She says so herself, though she uses more external situations to explain it (scary forests, etc.) It certainly explains her crush on Susie, but in the Snowgrave Route, it really works against her. Or, we use it against her. At a first glance, what we do to her in the Snowgrave route is awful, and then, the more you think about it, the worst it gets (usually a trademark of excellent horror and great writing in general, in my opinion.) not only are we playing into her deepest insecurities (because remember, it’s not Kris doing this, or us playing AS Kris, it’s just we, the player) we are actively abusing her as a person. We force her to fight. We force her to hurt people. We do all this for power. And we do all this while simultaneously doing it to Kris as well! And forcing Kris to be our mouthpiece, forcing them to hurt their friend who they presumedly love and care for! Unlike Susie and Ralsei, Noelle’s opinion of us cannot affect our journey and she is easy to control, so we do it. And once again, these are kids! They are children! We are not fighting Sans Undertale to the death, we are actively abusing and controlling children, much to the detriment of their mental health and the physical health of those around them.
Details such as the watch and the blackened “conversation” we have with Noelle in the hospital really only add to the experience. The implication that Berdly has been seriously harmed and potentially killed by what we’ve done to him (or more accurately, forced Noelle to do to him) is handled really interestingly from the younger persons perspective, where he simply doesn’t wake up. I could really go on and on, but unfortunately time is a constraint and I don’t think what I’m saying is very easy to parse anyway.
To summarise: Snowgrave Route good. Very well-written. Deltarune is a horror in disguise, but I will continue to put my hands over my ears and pretend everything is okay, just like Mr Toby Fox would like me to do. Thank you very much for the ask, I hope you’re doing well! If you have any thoughts of your own, please share them with me. I’d be delighted to hear your opinion as a writer (horror or not.) :]

They all went out for a special dinner as it was Spamton's 11th birthday
The day was amazing and they had alot of fun, locals gave him many gifts and after everybody gave him birthday wishes they went to the nearby town, it was slightly bigger than where they lived and it was only an hour of train away
But when Mango saw someone they had been spying on start to follow them he panicked
He whispered to Plum who in turn quickly pulled out their phone and tell the other two older siblings
"So Spamton, what did you think about your birthday today?"
"It was [[spectacular]] [[one of a kind]] day! I loved it when we went to the park and..." Spamton began to tell about the events of the day distracted from everything around him and he also spoke loud enough that if they lost him they'd know
Even though Plum had a tight grip on his hands, they had lost him before so it's better safe than sorry
They walked around to try and loose the guy and eventually they did but they also ended up in a dark narrow alley, only 1 person
"Uh, this looks like a [[horror movie]]" Spamton said looking down the alley
"You can say that again" Peach said feeling uneasy
"How did we even get here?" Mango said looking around "I didn't think we'd trail off this far" he mumbled, Spamton thought it was weird the last part he mumbled but ignored it
"Are we lost?" Peach asked Plum who was looking through their phone "no, we are not do not worry, we can actually get to the train station faster through here"
"But is it even safe?" Sunny said worriedly
"I have....no clue, but it's better than to go back there, he might still be looking for us" Plum whispered the last part
While the 4 brothers talked amongst themselves Spamton took the liberty to let go off Plum's hand and look around
The narrow alley had a few windows to some apartments and doors hidden between small cracks on the walls
He saw a few rats scurry around the trash that was thrown to the side
He spined around and noticed how small the place was, if he stretched his arms to his side he'd be able to touch the walls
He walked back to his brothers who were still talking between themselves "I think it's safe, it's to narrow for anyone to sneak up on from the sides and if someone appears from the other side we just run to the opening"
Peach raised a brow, impressed and suspicious of how he knew, but he figured it's basic knowledge and shrugged it off "but what if two people appear from each side?" She asked
"Again the [[creepy alleyway]] is very narrow, we could easily just climb up to the ceiling"
Peach smirked and ruffled his hair "you're a smart little fella"
Spamton pushed Peach's hand away "whenever we watch horror movies you complain about how easy it would be to escape and say how to do it"
"Wait you let him watch horror movies!?" Sunny said shocked and a bit pissed
"Psh, the kid can handle it, he likes them anyways" Peach said waving Sunny away
Sunny opened and closed his mouth a few times but nothing came out, so he just crossed his arms and let out an angry huff
"Well, let's get going. I don't want to stay here ajy longer then we have to" Mango said pushing Spamton to keep walking down the alleyway
They all began to walk behind them. Spamton seemed to he having fun oblivious to the paranoid siblings behind him
Mango would gently slap Spamton's hand whenever he would try to touch something he wasn't supposed to while the others kept on guard
Sunny had his hand on his pistol inside his coat and Peach kept his hand hovering over the dagger in her leggings and Plum kept checking around to see if any danger was around them
That's when Plum saw a figure behind them and panicked but tried to keep it calm and make it seem like they didn't notice but made signals to the other 3
"Spamton, I got a challenge for you" Mango said
"What is it?"
"I want you to reach the end of the alley in less then 30 seconds"
Spamton grinned "[[challenge excepted]]" and before he knew it the little addison was running to the end, Mango followed behind giving a nod to the three
"What a shame, I was hoping I would have to ruin a perfectly good dress" Peach said as he jumped and held himself by the wall and lunged herself to the man
She held him by pressing himself to the man's chest and closed his mouth so he wouldn't shout
••••••
"Where did the other [[competitors]] go?"
Mango was huffing and leaning over a light post "they're *huff* sore loosers that's what *huff* jesus, kid how are you so fast"
"I'm young your [[the elderly]]" Spamton said with a smirk
"You little brat, I'm only 7 years older" he said picking him up and shoving a fist to his head and messing it up
Spamton laughed "Yeah an [[elderly]]"
"He truly is old" a voice said coming towards them
Both looked to see Peach standing infront of them with a Sunny's coat on and without their gloves "Oh shut it you, you're only a year younger"
"I'm still more agile" Mango put his tongue out and Peach did the same
Soon Sunny and Plum walked up behind her
"You guys [[lost!]] I reached the train station before all [[you sore loosers]]" Spamton cheered wiggling his way out of Mango's arms
"Wait we were competing?" Peach played along "Yes! And I'm [[ the winner!]]"
"Danm you've gotten fast kid" Peach pinched Spamton's cheek "but let's head home, I wanna get outta this dump" Peach said putting his hand in the pocket of the coat
Spamton said a small red stain on her cheek but bearly registered it a Plum quickly cleaned it and scolding him for making such a mess of the while eating the her food
Huh, he swore Peach didn't have anything on their face until now
He shrugged it off, he wasn't paying attention either way
They walked inside and took their seats on the train, Spamton out of energy as it was way past his bed time passed out on Plum's lap and slept all the way home
Today was a nice birthday
End notes
Please don't feel discourage from putting more prompts! It's taking longer then usual because I'm out of data and can't access Tumblr all the time like I used too!
I love reading and writing ya'lls prompts, seeing a notification that another ask was sent literally makes my day better 🥺
