When you just don't remember things...
“There are 4 fraudulent transactions in my account over the period of last one month – request you to please investigate and let me know”
Over the last 19 years, at the end of every month, I download my bank account statement(s) and add the transactions to an excel statement which has records of all my banking transactions (yes, I do this religiously every month end or start of the next month!).
It was around the first week of Jan-22, we had a great new year celebrations at home with family and friends – on that lazy Sunday, I decided to update this file with transactions of the last one month. While tagging each expense, I realised there were 4 transactions (of INR 1500 each) which were not made by me (or at least I didn’t recollect making those transactions). I scanned the Gpay app, checked once, twice, thrice…I was convinced that someone has made these fraudulent transactions and I should raise an alarm right away.
I called the support team and after 20 minutes of questioning, they said “we will have to block your account, deactivate your Netbanking, block your debit card, deactivate UPI ID”…. I signed-up for this despite knowing fully that this was my primary bank account. After some time, I even raised a complaint with the cyber police. The next day, I took to twitter and sent a tweet to the bank’s handle about what had happened and how I wanted the team to investigate this matter, like ASAP!
Every day I would wake-up and wait for an update from the bank with a hope that this fraudster is caught, and I get my money back – it however took 10 to 12 days for them to send me a note saying, “your case is closed”. I was like “how could you close the case without any findings or resolution shared with me”. The next day, I went to the branch office to get more clarity. I went at 9:35AM (right at the start of the day for the bank) and met this person who said she cannot do anything from the branch and shall raise it with the concerned department. Considering this was already ~2 weeks since my account was blocked, I requested to atleast unblock my account and my Netbanking login.
Having not seen a satisfactory response from anyone at the bank, I finally approached someone internally at Ugam with contacts within the bank for assistance. After few days, the team was finally able to get to the root and found that these 4 transactions were made by me only and not any fraudulent transactions…phew!
I had travelled a lot during the Nov/Dec period and considering these were outstation travels, I had to keep recharging my FASTag account with INR 1500 and these 4 transactions were towards the same.
Ah, I wish I remembered things a little better!
When it is your fault, you obviously have to face the brunt too:
Primary account and Netbanking     blocked for 2 weeks
Debit Card blocked for 3 weeks
UPI blocked for 4 weeks
Having to use wifey’s     account/UPI for payments – still trying to pay her back now 😊
Having to decline daughter’s     request for Netflix subscription
 Any thoughts on improving memory!?
Have a great Friday and wishing all of us the ability to remember things (the good ones)! 😊
