FreeSync vs. G-Sync- AMD and Nvidia Face Off Adaptive Sync Dominance
One of the major issues that a gamer faces is screen tearing and it can turn out to be a really annoying factor that affects the gaming experience. For gamers who want a fast pacing game like the FPS or RTS, they face these problems to a large extent and it does not limit to just low-end computers. To solve this issue, the developers of graphics card and the monitor have come together in order to find a fix. Nvidia and AMD have come up with two distinct solutions to combat the screen tearing issue. They are known as adaptive sync or dynamic refresh rates. They differ in the technologies but come to solve the problem in a similar fashion. The thing that is different between them is their hardware implementation. The downside to this is that Nvidia cards don’t function with FreeSync monitors and same goes with AMD cards. They don’t function along with G-Sync monitors. With this article, you will be able to know all about how the technology works and help you guide your way through different monitors and graphics card available in the market. Read along to find out how FreeSync and G-Sync can stand as a remedy to this problem along with finding out their uses and differences.
The monitors in the market
The above-mentioned manufacturers had initially less number of monitors for sale but now they are widened to sell more with different quality of the displays.
The Pixels are Essential The Frame Tearing Issue
Even with high-performing computing systems, gamers have come to face the frame tearing issue. This is essentially caused due to the refresh rate carried by the monitor as it gets out of sync with respect to the graphics card embedded within.
Depending upon the varied load on the GPU, the events loading on the screen might get out of sync. This causes the graphics card to draw only a part of the frame when the screen refreshes, leading to a lagging set of images on the screen. This issue can be resolved by switching on the Vertical Sync inside the game. It forces the graphics card to sync up with the given monitor. Although, depending on the graphics card, the refresh rate might be varied which can cause unpleasant sight on the screen due to the screen tearing. This issue can be readily solved by using the G-Sync and FreeSync technology as it causes the monitor and GPU to communicate with each other and fix the issue.
With the established communication between the monitor and the GPU, the graphics card will be able to keep the refresh rate in control on the monitor. It can change it down to 49Hz, 35Hz, or essentially lower than 60Hz. This ensures that it changes according to the performance of the graphics card you own. This could discard the issue of stuttering from Vsync while simultaneously resolving the screen tearing issue on the display. The result of this will be noticeable as you will be able to have an immersive gaming experience without any issues or fluctuating frames.
The difference between FreeSync and G-Sync
The first to come to the market was Nvidia with its G-Sync technology. The launch partners with it were Asus, Acer, and AOC. There are many benefits of the technology but it comes with a certain drawback. The screens need to be compatible with the G-Sync tech and this could be on the more expensive side.
In order to function properly, the G-Sync monitors need to have a proprietary Nvidia G-Sync scaler module. This basically means that the monitors with G-Sync need to have on-screen menus and all the options on the screen similar. Although the monitor manufacturers are given the freedom to choose from the scalers basing on any hardware manufacturer which readily support FreeSync.
FreeSync is developed by AMD, this uses the adaptive sync of standard built embedded within the display port 1.2a. This supports any monitor that comes with a display port 1.2a input as per the VESA consortium. Even with that, it is not totally a free upgrade. It needs specific scaler hardware to function totally. Although the good news is that there are many third-party manufacturers who signed up to develop hardware which will be compatible with FreeSync. This could also mean that the pricing of the products will also be competitive.
The DisplayPort 1.2a is a standard that can be utilized and used by anyone but the Nvidia’s GPU do not support it. The company has been reported to say that they will be focusing on G-Sync entirely.
One of the most distinct differences between FreeSync and G-Sync is the way they handle the increased frame rates, more than the monitor can handle. In that case, the G-Sync technology locks the frame rates to function on an upper limit of the given monitor. And FreeSync readily allows the GPU to get a higher frame rate. This results in tearing but ensures that the input lag is reduced. This stands to be beneficial for gamers who like to play FPS titles.
The different Graphics Card which supports G-Sync and FreeSync
The older graphics card from Nvidia and AMD can be updated to function with the G-Sync and FreeSync technology. This makes way for you to take benefit of the tech without having to upgrade the graphics card. So, you can be ensured that the old ranges also support the adaptive sync. There are a lot of choices that you can surf through to find the perfect G-Sync monitor starting from leading brands like Acer and Asus.
The underlying issue is the compatibility issues occurring in the two systems. If you are in the market looking for an upgrade for your graphics card then you should wait for a while to see the market development. The cost between the G-Sync and FreeSync tech might vary with the benefits of both the technologies.
The Bottom Line
With the given benefits of both the technologies, AMD seems to stand on the brighter side for an adaptive sync monitor. The benefits on the hardware side stand apart along with its good compatibility with DisplayPort 1.2a monitors.

What the program does is basically force triple buffering and vsync GPU wasn't being pushed outside of normal boundaries. I tried it out, no issues and it locked the framerate at 60 without screen tearing.
I'm using a modern GPU, ATi Radeon HD7950 D3DOverrider is a program from a few years back.

To everyone saying this game isn't optomized (which it isn't) download D3doverriver. I've found that my fps stuttering (like a 50 to 45 drop randomly) with it enabled its constant.
Wow, what a difference having it enabled.

Sometimes it makes a simple little chime that I assume when does it has successfully forced triple buffering, but other times I hear like a windows caution/failure buzz and I'm not sure what any of the sounds mean 100% because. Just a quicky, I've Always wondered but have never been sure about the beeps D3DOverrider gives you when you launch games. This also happened with Portal so I went into graphics options and clicked the enable vertical sync button and all of the tearing went away, but no dice when I tried this with either of the Mass Effects My specs are listed in my sig and I have vertical sync enabled so I don't know what else to do. Hey guys! While I am playing Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, the screen tearing is horrendous.Plus if you want the only working implementation of triple buffering in DX11 (which by default doesn't support it) you should use nNvidia fast-sync. I only use it when playing Borderlands2, but D3DO definitely works for me on Windows10.This version is a maintenance release, it doesn't contain new features besides the fix mentioned above. Updated D3DOverrider v2.0.1 bundled utility.

Purge Re: D3DOverrider? Post #9 » Sat 4:03 pm Oh yeah, the above comment reminded me, there is an issue where when playing in windowed mode under Win10 (not sure about older Windows) the application gets handled by Windows Desktop Manager and not nVidia inspector/nVidia control panel or CCC or whatever the equivalent is for AMD how to get d3doverrider to actually do it's thing? : pcmasterrac If you use SweetFX or another injector D3DOverrider will not work, you have to disable your injector or use this alternative method to get more stable FPS. And one more time the most important note: D3DOverrider supports DX11 WITHOUT ANY TRICKS or config edits right out of box 1:24am. so does that mean d3doverrider v sync is not working You won't find any because there is no such entry supported by the tool and it does nothing whenever you beleive in it or not. its SUPER SUPER SMOOTH with v sync off in-game. frame timing is locked at 16.6 ms(which is good). I was reading that i can get super smooth gameply by forcing vsync and tripple buffering in d3doverrider and limiting fps to 60 in afterburner.
