The Road to... Wrestlemania XL
Part 4: Sami Zayn vs. Gunther, LWO vs. Escobar & Dominik, 6-Way Tag Team Ladder Match, & Damage CTRL vs. Belair, Naomi, & Cargill
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On top of the three I have already mentioned, there are four other matches on Wrestlemania XL Saturday!
We have Damage CTRL, who have been running roughshod over the Smackdown Women's Division for the better part of the year. We'll get to the crown jewel of that faction tomorrow, but their three other members are in action on Saturday. The Women's Tag Team Champions, The Kabuki Warriors (Kairi Sane & Asuka), and Dakota Kai are representing the unit as they take on a trio of popular women's stars.
Tumblr media
There's the returning Naomi, who rejoined the WWE in January, and is keen to show-up the unruly faction. There's also Bianca Belair, a multi-time women's champion who has been frequently undone by Damage CTRL. Completing their team is the debuting Jade Cargill. She has wrestled just one WWE match, that being the 2024 Royal Rumble where she made an immediate impression. She's joined Naomi & Belair in their fight against Damage CTRL, so the stage is set for Wrestlemania.
Tumblr media
There's also a big 6-team ladder match for both the Raw Tag Team Championships and the Smackdown Tag Team Championships! The Judgment Day have been on top of the tag team division, holding both titles for almost the entirety of the last 9 months. This will prove a challenge for the dark and dominant team of Damien Priest and Finn Balor...
Tumblr media
There's the 11-time champions The New Day, Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods. The happy-go-lucky team are always favourites to win a big match, having been some of the strongest champions in recent years. The team of #DIY are also in the match. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa have had their ups and downs, but when they're on the same page like they are now they're one of the best teams out there. You can never count out the team of Awesome Truth though, The Miz & R-Truth. The cocky and opinionated Miz will do anything to win, and Truth is entirely unpredictable, whether he means to be or not! He may have extra motivation too, having thought he was in The Judgment Day despite their dislike for him, leading to them feuding with the rapping wrestler.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Smackdown has some hot tag teams also in contention too though! There's the New Catch Republic, the former British Strong Style team of Tyler Bate & Pete Dunne. They challenged for the titles at Elimination Chamber in a losing effort, but these awesome young wrestlers are some of the best in the world and they'll want to get the belts on the second attempt. Lastly, there's also A-Town Down Under, Austin Theory & Grayson Waller. This mouthy and underhanded pair will be keen to win here and laud this accomplishment over the rest of the roster. Who will claim each set of titles in this chaotic matchup?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of tag teams, we have a tag team matchup between the Latino World Order and the team of Santos Escobar & Dominik Mysterio. When Rey Mysterio revived the LWO name, Santos Escobar was honoured to be a part of such a legendary faction. However, he grew frustrated with the Hall of Famer, and he would shockingly and brutally turn his back on Mysterio with a vicious beatdown. He would bring back his faction Legado del Fantasma with new members Angel Garza and Humberto Carillo, and they have been at loggerheads with the remaining LWO for months. However, when Mysterio & Escobar finally went head-to-head, the masked man's son Dominik, who had long-since distanced himself from his father, helped Escobar cheat a win.
A year after Rey defeated his son at Wrestlemania, a tag match was set up with Santos & Dominik against Rey and the newest member of the LWO, Dragon Lee. Despite the faction containing the tag team of Joaquin Wilde & Cruz Del Toro, plus legend Carlito, already in their ranks, Mysterio reached out to his fellow masked man for assistance. Carlito would find Lee injured on Friday Night Smackdown though, and a change had to be made. But in a surprise, Andrade El Idolo, a former rival of Mysterio's, showed up to assist the LWO against Legado del Fantasma and The Judgment Day's Dominik. Andrade would join LWO and be the man to tag with Rey at Wrestlemania.
Will it be the nefarious team of Santos Escobar & Dominik Mysterio?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or will the veteran Rey Mysterio and his ally Andrade El Idolo come out on top?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course, there's the big match for the Intercontinental Championship. Gunther, the big man from Austria, has held the title for a record-breaking 665 days. However, if there's anyone who can defy the odds, it's Sami Zayn. Zayn has gone through a lot in recent years: joining The Bloodline, breaking out of The Bloodline, winning the tag team titles in the main event of Wrestlemania 39 Saturday. He has yet to taste singles gold since he became a fan favourite again, and he is struggling to wear his heart on his sleeve once again to defeat the champion. He was able to win a gauntlet match to earn the opportunity though, despite his previous doubts of how he gets onto the card, and has been working with one of Gunther's biggest rivals throughout his reign, Chad Gable. The former Olympian has been training Zayn on all his experience with Gunther, but only time will tell if he can defeat the leader of Imperium, Gunther.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's all for Wrestlemania XL Saturday! You can also check out WWE's compilation videos for the ladder match, Rey & Andrade vs. Dom & Santos and Zayn vs. Gunther!

WWE Contract Expiring in August: Humberto Carillo’s Future Uncertain
One Big Thing Humberto Carillo, cousin of Angel Garza and member of the legendary Garza wrestling family, is set to become a free agent on August 1, the same day as Garza’s contract expiration. Key Points WWE has been unable to secure long-term extensions with several stars, including Becky Lynch, whose deal expired on Saturday. Natalya, Chad Gable, Ricochet, and Angel Garza’s contracts are also…

Smackdown Fake Rankings, 11/1/2021
Men's singles division - babyfaces
Drew McIntyre
Shinsuke Nakamura (intercontinental champion)
Jeff Hardy
Cesaro
Mansoor
Ricochet
Rick Boogs
Men's singles division - heels
Roman Reigns (universal champion)
Happy Corbin
Sami Zayn
Mustafa Ali
Jinder Mahal
Ridge Holland
Mace
Now that the dust has settled on the 2021 WWE draft, we have a clearer picture of what Smackdown's going to look like. Or we would, except a lot of the new arrivals have not wrestled on Smackdown since they were drafted. This doesn't give me a lot of confidence that WWE has any plans for Hardy, Mahal, Ricochet, Holland, and Mace. It's possible they're taking their time to do something down the line, but WWE is usually pretty bad at doing that.
The big question on Smackdown is whether they can keep the audience engaged with Roman Reigns as an invincible heel champion, because he's beating all the top stars faster than WWE can build up new ones. McIntyre has obviously been brought in to address this issue, and Hardy could be used as well (if WWE remembers he exists). But this just kicks the can down the road.
The problem isn't that Roman is too dominant, or that he's been on top for too long. The problem is that Smackdown's roster lacks the depth to build up more than two guys at a time--the champion and his next challenger. If you're trying to build up, say, Ridge Holland, you can't feed him anybody except the chumps that already failed against Roman (or Drew), which isn't enough to convince anybody he can beat Roman. So when he doesn't beat Roman, he looks like a chump. This cycle has played out in WWE for a long time, creating runaway chump inflation.
Men's tag team division - babyfaces
Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods
Isaiah Scott & Top Dolla
Viking Raiders - Erik & Ivar
Men's tag team division - heels
The Usos - Jey Uso & Jimmy Uso (Smackdown tag team champions)
Humberto Carillo & Angel Garza
When Hit Row was in NXT, Isaiah Scott was the singles guy, B-Fab represented the women's division, and Top Dolla and Ashante Adonis were the tag team. It's not clear if that arrangement will stay in place on Smackdown. Scott and Dolla worked a tag match, and Adonis and B-Fab haven't been had a match on the show yet. I could also see Scott, Dolla, and Adonis being a three-man tag team, like the New Day used to be.
Speaking of the New Day, I also don't know if Xavier Woods winning the King of the Ring will redirect him into singles action. They wouldn't have to break up the act, in that Kofi could be Xavier's sidekick, similar to Rick Boogs or Madcap Moss. Although if Woods and Kingston stay focused on the tag division, that would be the most novel direction they've gone with a King of the Ring in years.
The Viking Raiders and Carillo/Garza have yet to have a match on Smackdown since the draft.
Women's singles division - babyfaces
Sasha Banks
Naomi
Toni Storm
Natalya
Women's singles division - heels
Charlotte Flair (Smackdown women's champion)
Shayna Baszler
Sonya Deville
Shotzi
Between the Queen's Crown tournament, the Naomi/Sonya feud, and Shotzi's heel turn, they've actually managed to get a lot of women in the ring this month. We'll see if that holds up, though. Technically Sonya's return to in-ring action was the old "it's a handicap match and my partner will do all the work" thing, so I'm not convinced she's really returning as a full-time wrestler yet.
The women's tag team division is effectively defunct on Smackdown, since the draft split up the few teams they had. Raw's Nicki ASH and Rhea Ripley are allowed to come here by virtue of being the tag team champions, but since there are no teams here to challenge them for the title, there's no impetus for them to show up. It would be trivial for WWE to address this, but I suspect they won't bother, and I'm curious to see how long that goes.
No TV matches in 30 days: Aliyah, Ashante Adonis, B-Fab, Drew Gulak, Shanky, Xia Li
Gulak and Shanky were drafted from Raw; the others were drafted from NXT. None of them were doing much on those shows, so I don't understand the point of moving them to Smackdown and still not doing much with them. I assume Adonis and B-Fab will be featured as Hit Row as a whole gets pushed, but I'd have expected more right out of the gate. Xia Li is getting the whole "coming soon" bit, so we have to Just Let It Play Out. Everybody else feels like they're earmarked for a prelim show like Main Event or 205 Live, except Smackdown is the brand that doesn't have one of those.
Inactive
Bayley (left knee - ACL tear)
Brock Lesnar (storyline - suspension)
Sheamus (face - broken nose)
Everybody in the injured list was left out of the 2021 draft pool, so Bayley is effectively a free agent once she's medically cleared to return. Essentially this just means WWE is giving themselves permission to have her big surprise return on whatever show they feel like.
For some reason Sheamus was in the draft pool, and drafted to Smackdown, despite reinjuring his broken nose a few weeks ago and needing surgery. I assume that means he's expected back relatively soon, but it's been a month. Actually, if he showed up in a backstage skit I might just not have heard about it.
Lesnar is supposed to have it in his contract that he's a free agent that can't be drafted and can go to whichever show he wants. I'm not sure why they established this fact if he isn't going to Raw now and then. I'm also not sure why he didn't show up on Raw the second he got suspended on Smackdown.

I guess you have already answered this question a 100 times, but who are your faves? Also when did you start getting into WWE? Btw I love your blog & you’re absolutely gorgeous! 🌼
1) it’s ok!!! Current fav of all time is Drew McIntyre with almost no contest, and I like Bayley, Naomi, Bianca Belair, The New Day, Sasha Banks, Asuka, Humberto Carillo, Angel Garza, Sonya Deville and LHP.
2) I usually forget how long it’s been!! I got into it around September/October of 2018 because my twin showed me pics of Finn Balor and I fell down the rabbit hole and then started fucking loving Drew and now here we are!!!
3) Thank you so much lovely!! Thank you for stopping by and liking my blog! Thanks for the compliment!!! Love it!!

WrestleMania 37 (Review)
What was wrong with Wrestlemania 37? Uh let's go in order. Slammiversery '16 vibes. Drew McIntyre being put to sleep by Bobby Lashley is much of an upset that I can't say not a lot of people wanted. Good on them for finally making Lashley look strong, but after year's of ruined booking coupled with him being boring, it was overall unfortunate for WrestleMania to open on a sour note; not to mention at the expense of McIntyre. Hope they repeat that again night two.. Natalya & Tamina won the Tag-Team gauntlet which deserved to be pre-show filler more than some matches in past WrestleMania pre-shows. Cesaro defeated Rollins was fine, but perhaps should have gotten more than 11:35 minutes. AJ Styles & Omos going over New Day wasn't bad, but underwhelming. To have New Day & AJ Styles not in their own elements of showcasing a tag-team and singles bout clinic and instead lumping them together to carry Omos wasn't WrestleMania worthy. Strowman vs Shane McMahon in a cage was not bad at all. Felt like it could have opened up WrestleMania in prior years. As well as Bad Bunny & Damian Priest did against Miz & Morrison, I'm upset that they couldn't have opted to use Miz & Morrison in a better role; like perhaps against New Day? Lastly for night one, Bianca Belair got her moment, but unfortunately at the expense of Sash Banks who's now 0-7 at WrestleMania. Maybe it's because I didn't follow Bianca in NXT, but for her to come up, last 29 others in a rumble and then main event WrestleMania night one against Sasha Banks seems like a lot for someone who I haven't heard of outside of dating Montez Ford.
Night two, and everything wrong with it: One.. Having The Fiend in his first match back lose to Orton in 5 minutes is a joke. Ruining The Fiend and Alexa Bliss' union in order to achieve the aforementioned issue is the second offense. Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler defeating Natalya & Tamina was alright. I don't look at it as WrestleMania worthy, and not to mention it was the second longest match of night two.. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn's bout was decent. Again, if WrestleMania worthy, I'd say it deserved to be in the same boat as Strowman vs McMahon in the sense that it was built fine, executed fine.. but it's WrestleMania.. and "fine" shouldn't be the goal trying to be shot for. Sheamus defeated Riddle for the US Title was well done, and the ending spot was nice. Apollo Crews defeated Big E I found to be a joke, not to mention the stipulation being heavily needed. Maybe it's just me, but years of lack luster booking with Apollo & relegating Big E to the tag division have ruined me viewing this match as WrestleMania worthy. Not to mention both men's status would be more indicative of a lower-card title like a European, rather than a higher mid-card title such as the Intercontinental championship. Sorry not sorry. Rhey Ripley getting her win was nice. I believe the match could have went longer than 13:30, but also think that having her beat Asuka wasn't good for business. Why not having her win the Rumble is beyond me. Lastly, the only arguably great match of either night.. Roman Reigns vs Edge vs Daniel Bryan. I feel like this was done well, but still by the end of it, something felt off. Weather it be constant interference by Jey Uso, or the fact that they had Roman pin both of them; the finishes and booking of this show did one thing well, and it was having the seemingly wrong competitors win. Maybe moving forward it won't be as bad because they have plans in store.. but what am I kidding? This is the WWE in 2k21. IMO the only people who should have went over that did were: Cesaro, Styles & Amos, Strowman, Kevin Owens, Sheamus (although could have went either way), & Rhea (although at the expense of Asuka). This 'Mania was a disappointment. I don't know what I'd rate it, but a 2.5/3 out of 10 sounds about right if I had to guestimate.
I'll leave you with this short list of notable names left off of the WrestleMania card: Elias, Jaxson Ryker, Jeff Hardy, Keith Lee, Mustafa Ali, Ricochet, Samoa Joe, Aleistar Black, Bayley, King Corbin, Dolph Ziggler, Rey Mysterio, Robert Roode, & Shinsuke Nakamura.. all MIA.. but yeah.. Bad Bunny, Omos, Tamina, & Apollo get 5 matches between the 4 of them. I’ve never seen a modern WrestleMania feel more like 2nd rate B-show May-June PPV (excluding MItB).. Could have had: Night 1: 1. Mustafa Ali vs Ricochet (Either give it a build a few weeks before; perhaps be Ricochet the reason why Ali broke away from Retribution; if not, have Adam Pierce acknowledge how good of talent they are, and say “The universe deserves one hell of a match for their first night back as a live audience, so I want to give them something special”, IE: This match.) 2. Raw Tag-Team Championships: Kofi Kingston (champion) & Xavier Woods (champion) defeat Elias & Jaxon Ryker, Gran Metalik & Lince Dorado, Slapjack & T-Bar, & Humberto Carillo & Angel Garza [Tag-Team Turmoil Match] 3. Keith Lee defeats AJ Styles 4. Shane McMahon defeats Braun Strowman via escape when Braun puts Shane through the cage and Shane hits the floor. (The beating can continue throughout the area like Strowman’s beating to Reigns did at Great Balls of Fire; essentially being a backstage / falls count anywhere segment.) 5. Universal Championship No. 1 Contender’s Match: Seth Rollins & Kevin Owens defeat Cesaro, Shinsuke Nakamura, Sami Zayn, & King Corbin [6-Man Scramble Match] ; Seth Rollins & Kevin Owens get a double pin on Sami Zayn, advancing in a Triple Threat Match & furthering Sami Zayn’s conspiracy theories. 6. WWE Championship Match: The Miz (champion) vs Daniel Bryan (who should have either won the Royal Rumble and faced Miz who cashed in at Rumble, or won the championship from Roman Reigns at Fastlane, and been cashed in on by The Miz, therefore setting up this match.) 7.  Raw Woman’s Championship Match: Rhea Ripley defeats Asuka (champion) & Bianca Belair (by pinning Bianca Belair) Night 2: 1. United States Championship Challenge: Riddle (champion) defeats A returning Samoa Joe or Jeff Hardy / Alternatively; Aleistar Black & or Adam Cole could make a surprise appearance and go over. 2. SmackDown Tag-Team Championship: Dolph Ziggler (champion) & Bobby Roode (champion) defeat Rey & Dominik Mysterio / Street Profits 3. Drew McIntyre defeats Sheamus [Falls Count Anywhere, Last Man Standing, and or Cinematic Bar-Room Brawl Match] 4. Bobby Lashley & M.V.P defeat Shelton Benjamin & Cedrick Alexander [Tag-Team Match] 5. “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt defeats Randy Orton 6. SmackDown Women’s Championship: Sasha Banks (champion) defeats Bayley 7. Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (champion) defeats Seth Rollins vs Kevin Owens  Yet we didn’t get this. We got what we got. And I for one am underwhelmed, dissapointed, and feel like there was no effort. I don’t even think the show was worth the cost of production. #SorryNotSorry

My 2020 Night One Draft Picks
Raw: Asuka, Bianca Belair, Dana Brooke, Humberto Carillo, Drew Gulak, The Hurt Business, Lucha House Party, Drew McIntyre, Murphy, The Mysterios, Seth Rollins, Mandy Rose, Shayna and Nia, Chad Gable
Smackdown: Sasha Banks, Elias, Angel Garza, Heavy Machinery, Mickie James, Naomi, New Day, Roman Reigns, Ricochet, AJ Styles, Jey Uso.
I don’t see a lot of changes happening with this group honestly, most are involved with other people and I don’t see them stopping storylines.
Any comments or questions?
