#SouthernRoots "Bein Neighborly" Part II #hurricaneirma tried it's best to dislodge our #SouthernRoots here in North Central Florida and around the rest of the state. She caused so much destruction, but the spirit and determination of the people here remained firmly rooted in our town and each other. What impressed me the most as I went around taking photos of the hurricane aftermath for the newspaper, were all the people that just stepped up and pitched in wherever needed, without being asked, without expecting anything in return...just doing it because it was "the right thing to do." This is Part II of the video I did for the paper on the aftermath. Paul Vickey was driving around his neighborhood and saw two of the oldest, biggest trees around blocking one of the main streets that run through town. He called up the guys he works with, told them to get "their boots on" and come help. They showed up with trucks and chainsaws, and got to work..."because that's what you do for your neighbor." In my little town, our #SouthernRoots remained firm in spite of #Irma. ~~~~~ (Part I and III can also be seen on my IG page, and the entire video can be seen on my FB page, @cyndichamberssports. #SouthernRoots Say hello to "The Beast". The GenPower portable gas engine generator. This noisy, grating, rattling beast on wheels is elevated to life-saving gasoline of the gods status at this house ever since it's wicked stepsister Irma flew through town. "The Beast" is the giver of air (ceiling fan) and water (bottles kept cold in fridge) and breathes life into small pocket-sized portable rescuers (charges portable iPhone chargers on 3 valuable electricity sourced outlets). So whatever "The Beast" wants, "The Beast" gets. Even if that means a 2:30am feeding of its liquid source of power, the valuable-hard-to-find gasoline. Which if you've ever tried pouring a 5 gallon can of gas down into a narrow opening at 2:30 in the morning, you know that odds are you are going to walk away baptized by "The Beast" with gas splashing all over one of your favorite pairs of running shoes. (Eau de Gasoline...the newest "fragrance" coming soon to Southern convenience stores near you) But that's alright...I'll just consider it a sacrifice to the gasoline gods in the hopes it will appease them and "The Beast" enough to keep running a few more hours so I can try to get some sleep...that is, until it's feeding time again. @cyndichamberssports ••• •• • #hurricaneirma #hurricaneprobs #thingscouldbeworse #glasshalffull #thesunwillcomeouttomorrow #thebeast #genx (at Florida)

#SouthernRoots Sometimes All You Can Do Is Laugh... Still no power after #hurricaneirma, but the generator is humming along nicely which means the fridge and one room has electricity. With gas for the generator already running low this morning, I set out in search of the magic liquid to feed the beast. The gas line at the one gas station I found open today stretched for one mile down the road, but what choice did I have. So I drove past all the cars that were waiting in line and got behind a little Kia and crossed my fingers hoping there'd still be gas by the time I got to the pumps. That gas line crawled along... sometimes by inches, sometimes only a couple feet. I finally got within sight of the gas pumps, and turned into the station, only to realize the gas station was playing a cruel trick on all of us by having us snake through the parking lot like those infernal Disney World type lines before letting us actually get up to the pumps. But, I finally made it to the promise land, and the glorious smell of gasoline fumes greeted me😜 As I pulled into place next to the pumps, I got out, opened the tailgate on my truck, relieved with the realization I had actually made it, and started taking the tops off the two 5 gallon cans and the four 1 gallon cans to expedite my trip to the tank. But my "gas high" was quickly deflated by the gruff gas station "attendant" who barked out at me..."two cans...that's your limit...which two will it be? let's go...let's go...hurry up..." Hmmmm.... decisions....decisions 🤔 Oh gosh sir, I don't know...I guess after waiting in line for an hour for this gas, I'll just fill two of the SMALLEST cans I have just so I can experience all this fun again as soon as possible😒 ••• •• • #hurricaneprobs #pleasesirmayihavesomemore #justanotherdropwilldo #runningonempty #glasshalffull #thingscouldbeworse (at Florida)

#SouthernRoots So, I wasn't kidding when I said in that earlier post "there goes another branch"...when the wind died down a little I wanted to see exactly what it was that fell, and whatever it was, I wanted to see where it landed (roof? driveway? street?) I didn't have to look far...I opened the door and the first image is looking to the left--that's part of the driveway...except you can't see much of it because it's covered with debris. The second image is the branch from the huge old oak tree that normally can be seen spreading over part of the house and garage...that was the sound I heard as it cracked off the tree and crashed to the ground, now blocking the side porch. And the video is what the rest of the branch looks like (about the size of a small tree) extending further and is also now blocking the garage. But you know what...that's ok... because it just missed hitting the house by less than a foot. I'll take that as a win for us. #SouthernRoots What do you do at 2am when the "eye wall" of the hurricane is approaching your area, every room and bed in your house has occupants peacefully sleeping through 40mph+ howling winds knocking on the window panes and blowing all manner of branches and God knows what else around outside (there goes another branch), you have no power, and you are getting alerts about hurricane warnings, flash flood warnings and now tornado warnings...well of course you get out your tools, use that engineering degree you got when you stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, and figure out how to take apart the #EverReady flashlight that some sadistic s.o.b. apparently designed when they were mad at the world. #EverReady? How 'bout #NeverReady 😒 But hey...jokes aside...no complaints from this girl... I'm safe and sound in my own home, with plenty of emergency candles, food, water, batteries and other flashlights that do actually work (ha), and most importantly, family and friends are safe and sound too. #hurricaneirma #hurricaneprobs #justkillingtime #standingguard #nightlights #hurricanepro #readingbycandlelight #theamishmightbeontosomething #anothersleeplessnight (at Florida)
