HYEJIN'S BACKGROUND °•°•°•°

% early life ------

hyejin was born in new york city in 2000 on february 15th.

she is the youngest of four siblings : her twin eldest brother and sister , taehyun and nayeon ( a popular social media influencer )and her other older sister , chaeyeon , who is an idol as well.

her family moved to korea in 2006 , shortly after her sixth birthday , due to her mother’s job. a year later , her parents divorced but her mother quickly remarried.

she sung in the choir of her church and school which initiated her initial love for music. this paired with her admiration of chaeyeon made her pursue the choice to becoming a idol. her mother and stepfather were completely against the idea but with the support of her siblings and father , she would secretly go to a vocal coach so she could improve her vocal talent

% being a trainee -------

a former sm trainee ;in 2013 ,  she went to an open audition to support one of her friends. while originally , she didn’t have plans to audition , she friend managed to persuade her last minute. she sang ‘ please don’t ‘ by k.will and was accepted while unfortunately her friend wasn't.

she moved to seoul with her father , much to the dismay of her mother , so she could begin training. she was in sm for a little over a year before she was added to smrookies and announced that she would be debuting with sm’s new global group project. 

with the announcements came comparisons to her older sister since she was an artist under sm as well. the pressure to be as good as her was so overwhelming that she ultimately decided to leave the company in may of 2015 but it wasn’t long before she was scouted by a recruiter for jyp after a concert held at her school.

hyejin and ryujin would both participate in the survival show , ‘ mixnine ‘ , where the two were displayed as a power duo , ryujin excelling in dancing while hyejin as a vocalist. throughout the program, she would be praised for her vocal talents and would almost always lead any vocal heavy performance for the female teams. she placed second right behind ryujin.

% debuting with itzy -----

korean netizens were initially excited hyejin’s debut but with dalla dalla’s were extremely disappointed. most felt that her talents were being wasted or that she simply didn’t fit the groups concept but after the release of icy , the opinion slowly shifted as her stage presence grew.

after debuting , she had gained more and more attention for her growing stage presence and dancing abilities.

‘are you nervous”?

hyejin shrugged as she tied her shoelaces. today was the monthly evaluations for the trainees but this time it was to see who would be played in the next lineup for the company’s next boy and girl groups. sure, a lot was at stake for hyejin to do well but she felt if she thought about it as any other evaluation then she would have a better chance at keeping her composure.

‘gosh, you have nerves of steel, hyejin… you look so unbothered and I’m practically shaking out of my shoes’ ‘ryujin , i feel like you should be the least nervous out of all of us’

ryujin would without a doubt be placed in the debut lineup. she was a phenomenal dancer and rapper and their trainers always had nothing but positives things to say to her at the end of her evaluations. hyejin , while she got praises now and again , she never really stood out in the words of the trainers. she was always in the background keeping to herself and in the group evaluations, she settled for doing mostly supporting vocals but today , that was going to change. 

half an hour passed before the door opened, all of the girls looked up ready to greet their trainers but all stumbled to their feet in shock. there stood park jinyoung, a small smile on his face as each of the girls bowed in greeting to him. “ah, i bet this is a bit surprising for me to just show up so suddenly but i was told we had some very promising trainees and i thought i would come to do the evaluations myself”

the energy in the room suddenly became tense. park jinyoung was notoriously picky about what he wanted in an idol so the smallest thing could make or break them right now. everyone watched as he sat down , sitting the folder containing all of their profiles and training notes on the table in front of him. he cleared his throat looking between the ten girls standing in front of him. 

“ now let’s get started shall we?”

‘ lee hyejin ‘

hyejin slowly rose to her feet and stood in the middle of the room. she gently chewed on her lip as she watched him read her profile. jinyoung glanced between her and the paper before slipping his glasses off with a sigh. “ hyejin … by the looks of your profile , you’re not really anything outstanding. “ hyejin bit the inside of her cheek at his words. she had heard that he was brutally honest but she wasn’t expecting this. “ but maybe today , you can turn that around because right now , debut doesn’t seem to be in your future.” 

gasps filled the room. hyejin cleared her throat and said one simple sentence. she couldn’t let him see her nervousness. she was going to show what she was made of.

“ i’m going to change your mind.” 

jinyoung raised an eyebrow. ‘ are you really that confident in yourself ? “hyejin nodded, not breaking eye contact with the older man. “ then show me what you got “

everyone in the room grew quiet as the instrumental to sistar’s give it to me filled the room. 

the song was a risky choice on hyejin’s part as the song was a bit higher than she was used to but she had spent that past two weeks playing around with a pitch that was comfortable to her but not too far off from the original and she felt that she had found a happy medium. jinyoung nodded his head along to the beat as he listened to her and when she was done , he couldn’t help but clap.

“ i’ll be honest … you really surprised me , hyejin. when you said that you’ll change my mind , i couldn’t help but wonder if you were just being cocky or if you actually had the talent to back up your words… it seems that it was the latter. “ jinyoung said , chuckling as he looked back down at her profile. “ you were hiding an amazing voice and i can’t wait to hear more of it when you debut. “

hyejin couldn’t help the smile that appeared on her face as she bowed and thanked him. 

when the evaluations were over , ryujin immediately ran over and nearly tackled the older girl in a hug.

"gosh , you looked so cool back there. " she said simply as she grinned at her. hyejin chuckled , gently patting the top of her head. "you doubted me ?"

ryujin immediately shook her head , grabbing her hand and dragging her towards the cafeteria so the two of them could eat.

" of course not ! we're meant to debut together remember! "
