Salinas Pueblo Missions (2) (3) (4) by David Nelson Blair
Via Flickr:
(1) Tompiro speakers lived in a pueblo at the Gran Quivira site through good and bad times for about 700 years. In the last half century, Franciscan calls for labor to build this church and convento at Mission San Buenaventura drew people away from critical tasks of subsistence, contributing to the abandonment of the site by both pueblo people and Franciscans in 1671. (3) The second church at Gran Quivira was begun during drought in the 1660s and never completed. (4) In 1661, Franciscans forbade Tompiro speakers from performing traditional ceremonies in large kivas (round, sunken rooms). Modern achaeologists have found evidence that the ceremonies were moved to hidden rooms in the large Gran Quivira complex.

Chalk Hill Hymenopappus
Hymenopappus tenuifolius
Growing in Short Grass rem at Lake Hiwassee, I checked the three species listed in OK, I decieded to go against Hymenopappus scabiosaeus due to the widening of the leaves common to that species. Carolla is indeed white; leaves of this species are more narrowed off with no widening so truely liniar. other key features for the species photographed above has those super cool glandular yellow phyllaries. " Biennials, 40-150 cm. Leaves 2-pinnate, 8-15 cm, lobes (3-)5-15+ × 0.5-1.5+ mm; cauline 8-30. Heads 20-200 per stem. Pedun-cles 1-5 cm. Phyllaries yellowish, 5-8 × 2-4 mm. Ray florets 0. Disc florets 25-50; corollas whitish, 2.5-3 mm, tubes 1.5-2.2 mm, throats campanulate, 0.8-1.5 mm, lengths 1.5-2 times lobes. Cypselae 3.5-4.5 mm, ± villous; pappi of 16-18 scales 1-1.5(-2) mm. 2n = 34. Flowering (Apr-)May-Jul(-Aug). Sandy, gravelly, or silty soils, limestone; 50-2100 m; Colo., Kans., Nebr., N.Mex., Okla., S.Dak., Tex., Wyo." - John L. Strother in Flora of North America (vol. 21)
Still would love to see that Hymenopappus scabiosaeus in-situ and photograph it along with Hymenopappus flavescens which is more present in the western sections of the state.

The old plainsman (Hymenopappus artemisiifolius), a plant with unique flowers and a cool name. You can only find it in Texas and a few other states.

Plecia nearctica pairs. This species is commonly known as the lovebug because the adults spend most of their brief lives (less than 1 week) coupled. In some areas the may form groups large enough to pose a hazard to motorists. In this field they seemed most attracted to old plainsmen (Hymenopappus artemisiifolius), and the extrafloral nectaries of passionflower (Passiflora incarnata). The larvae feed on decomposing organic matter.

Hymenopappus filifolius, fineleaf hymenopappus, has such adorable little disk flowers. Plus, they're adorable in fruit: that scaled pappus looks like a whole new set of blossoms! The pappus obviously has something to do with the genera's name, while the common name and specific epithet "filifolius" refers to the species thread-like leaves. #Asteraceae #Hymenopappus #wildflowers #flowers #arizona #ponderosapineforests #nativeplants #botany #plants #nature #naturephotography  #botanylove #plantstagram  #naturelovers #naturemakespeoplehappy #etymology (at Arizona)
