don’t think i posted about it yet, so: i really enjoyed the first ep of ethersea, though i can see how it’s absolutely not something everyone would be into. i love worldbuilding stuff though and don’t mind it having less goofs because of the nature of what they’re doing.

that said, i’m torn because after they finish doing all this set up work, we’re presumably never going to see this community they’ve built again because it’s on the surface and most (if not all) of the campaign will take place underwater. i do think it’s worthwhile to establish some things about it, since these people are the ones who establish the underwater community so they’ll shape the culture of the world the campaign will actually take place in. i’m just not sure it makes for good podcasting to include multiple episodes of world building stuff that a lot of people don’t seem to care for, for a community that’s ultimately abandoned and unlikely to be revisited since the surface is seemingly uninhabitable (almost willing to bet money rn that the PCs will at least try to visit this area at some point in the campaign tho)? it might’ve been better for them to play the surface-based eps of the quiet year but hold on to them to release it as some sort of bonus ep (not necessarily behind a paywall / as a maxfun bonus ep, they could’ve saved it to release on off weeks or something), and instead have ep 1 be some sort of world building for the underwater community, like a main hub place for them to build up that they could all feel connected to and engaged with? i just feel like focusing more on the actual setting of the campaign would probably be better for both the campaign itself and the podcast, especially if this surface community world building goes on for more than like two episodes (which seems extremely likely imo).

second ep of ethersea was good, though the ending was super abrupt? i literally didn’t realize it was over until the maxfun slogan started.

my only real complaints about ethersea rn: the quiet year doesn’t necessarily seem like the best system for this based off what i’ve read about it, mostly just due to them knowing ultimately how this year will end (with everyone living underwater). my other complaint is that i wish griffin would like, chill a bit? there’s absolutely nothing wrong with him having an idea for this world and how he wants things to go, which you can tell that he does since he tries to sort of reshape the other guys’ ideas a few times into things that seemingly go more along with what he has planned. but maybe don’t make a big deal out of playing a collaborative world building game as equals if you’re gonna seem frustrated when the other players work on things that don’t work towards your pre-conceived ideas/goals (that they don’t seem to know about, other than the goal of getting underwater to live) about the world or try to alter what their ideas are?

forgot to complain about this earlier but the mcelroys saying that it’s hard for them to record the podcast when podcasting is literally all of their full time jobs is wild to me??? i know they all have kids, but it’s not like they’re working 40 hours a week and taz is a fun side project they do on the side.
