tma spoilers & critical/negative below cut
starting out ahead and saying if you liked it good on you. I do not in any way think its like objectively shit writing or anything like that! I didn’t even dislike it that much, just more of a general “wait thats it” vibe
jons “nobody should or will ever feel like i did again” moment from 199 felt really powerful, and in this ep it felt super undercut by the fact he went with web master plan 4d chess with like basically no argument?? and not really any remorse, or a plan, or anything?
also i dont... the webs plan doesnt bother me from ethical/theoretical perspective, i like the questions it poses, but it was SUPER jarring to suddenly be like “MULTIDIMENSION SCIFI!!!”
given that i think something that would be neat would be jon proposing himself as a sacrifice to essentially send the fears somewhere empty, or within himself, so that he could combust/starve them. And maybe that does end up killing a lot of people connected with fears or smth. Not my ideal ending but i think it would be a bittersweet twist to finally give him a legit choice and twist around the whole willing-unwilling sacrifice thing.
also the character chunk of the ep just felt very short and trite like we BARELY even got georgie and melanie and basira. like :/
Anyways for all it was touted as a tragedy it was a very clean ending mostly because as i said earlier the characters dont really feel remorse/guilt/regret in any way for passing the fears along? They dont even have TIME to feel any of that. Its not even “they died and sad :(“ because yes, sad, but i was expecting more from something said to be a rich chocolate torte of tragedy
BUT my IDEAL ending would be this. like minor changes
Same scenario; martin & jon at the panopticon, jon killed elias, martin like “shit man, our chain email plan is already in motion and your death couldve been avoided”
then this is where things change— rather than fight, jon stands his ground; maybe he tries to send the previous archivists, drones, etc to stall the women (which could segway into a brief clip of them, or a statement about them, or something— a nice little send off) or at least looks in on them (same deal with a statement/etc)
and what jon decides to do is speedrun end the world. he decides to if the archive goes in flames, the fire will spread, killing all— including the fears (starving)
Jon and Martin, on opposite sides of the dilemma, share a last i love you before their plans both go down
Then there’s your ambiguous ending thats very bittersweet and regret filled. Does the explosion/fire bring about the end of this reality?? Or are the fears passed on to the next?? The magnus archives is a podcast
or maybe this is shit and im drugged to the gills and cant comprehend anything, you be the judge
